For the first time in 25 years, two of Ventura County's most successful girls' basketball programs are booked for a playoff game.
Ventura and Thousand Oaks have combined to win more than 1,100 games, four section titles and eight championship game appearances.
Saturday night's Division I-AA game between host Ventura (24-2) and Thousand Oaks (15-11) will be the first postseason matchup between the two schools since 1983.
Playoff pairings for boys' and girls' basketball were released Sunday by the CIF. Brackets for boys' and girls' soccer playoffs will be announced today.
The Ventura-Thousand Oaks game is the only opening game between two county schools. Ventura beat Thousand Oaks, 63-46, in the first round of the Ventura Optimist Tournament in December. Ventura has been ranked as high as No. 15 in the state this season. Thousand Oaks is guaranteed its first winning season and best Marmonte League finish (tied for third) in 10 years.
"Playing a county team is good," said Ventura coach Ann Larson. "It is good for us; we don't have to travel. It is good for local interest to have two county teams playing each other.
"We haven't seen them since December and I know they have become healthier since. For a long time, the 46 points they scored were the most against us."
Ventura's road to a possible third section championship game appearance in the last seven years includes potential games against No. 11 seed Bishop Amat, No. 3 seed Brea Olinda and No. 2 seed Millikan.
Buena, runner-up to Ventura in the Channel League, and Marmonte League champion Royal were seeded No. 12 and No. 13, respectively, in Division I-AA. Buena is making its 35th straight playoff appearance.
Neither of the Tri-Valley League's four representatives in the II-AA playoffs were seeded.
As a consequence, co-champions Fillmore and Oaks Christian have tough draws. If Fillmore wins its first-round game, the Flashes, a league champion for the first time in 11 years, would likely face No. 2 seed Mater Dei. Standing in Oaks Christian's way is possible second-round opponent Etiwanda, the No. 4 seed.
Pacific View League champion Oxnard, seeded No. 7 in III-A, opens at home against Pioneer Valley. Channel Islands was seeded No. 12 and will play Marymount at home.
Condor League champion Thacher drew a first-round home game in the IV-A playoffs against Victor Valley Christian.
Villanova, the Frontier League champion, was seeded No. 4 in Division V-AA and received a first-round bye. The Wildcats, winners of 12 consecutive games, will be at home Saturday in the second round against either Omega League champion Newbury Park Adventist or Kern Valley. La Reina, the division's No. 8 seed, faces Los Angeles Adventist on the road Thursday.
Boys
St. Bonaventure and Simi Valley were the only county schools to be among the top four seeds in their divisions.
A loss in its regular-season finale against Malibu cost St. Bonaventure the No. 1 spot in Division V-A.
But it did not take away from what the Seraphs (12-13), a 2007 semifinalist, accomplished: winning 10 straight games after a 2-11 start.
Simi Valley (25-1) brings the county's best boys' record into the playoffs since Oxnard won 25 of its first 26 games four years ago, finishing 27-2.
Seeded No. 3 in Division I-AA, Simi Valley has won 12 straight games since losing to top-seeded Dominguez, 84-83, in the championship game of the Nike Torrey Pines Tournament.
Simi Valley opens at home Friday against the winner of Wednesday's wild-card game between Paramount and Orange Lutheran.
Thousand Oaks, seeded No. 10, hosts Mission Viejo in the first round. The Lancers could face Dominguez in the quarterfinals.
In Division I-A, Ventura will be on the road against No. 14 seed Glendora. The Ventura-Glendora winner will likely face No. 3 seed El Toro in the second round.
Pacific View League champion Oxnard, seeded No. 10 in II-A, will be at home against San Luis Obispo. Camarillo will be on the road against No. 7 Highland. Finishing as high as third in the PVL for the first time in eight years, Channel Islands drew a first-round road game against No. 3 seed Ocean View.
Santa Clara, Oak Park and Oaks Christian were seeded among the top 10 teams in III-AA. Santa Clara, making its 36th straight postseason appearance, is seeded fifth. Winner of 15 of its last 17 games, Oak Park is the No. 6 seed. Oaks Christian was seeded ninth.
