Morning Report: Brush fire near homeless camp extinguished

Police and Fire: Firefighters early this morning extinguished a small brush fire in the Ventura riverbed, authorities said.

Ventura City and Ventura County firefighters found the blaze when they responded about 12:50 a.m. to a report of fire in the riverbed near the Main Street Bridge in Ventura, according to a statement from the Ventura City Fire Department.

It took firefighters about 90 minutes to put out and mop up the 1,000 square-foot blaze, which began as a warming fire a nearby homeless encampment.

Police located five homeless people in the area. No one was cited or arrested, police said.

No one was injured in the fire.

----------

Traffic: At 6:37 a.m., the California Highway Patrol was advising motorists on the southbound Highway 33 connector to Highway 101 to watch out for a bag of clothes causing a traffic hazard in lanes.

----------

Weather: Sunny, warm and breezy conditions are expected throughout the county today, the National Weather Service reported.

High temperatures are expected to reach into the mid 80s in county valleys.

Why were they not cited or arrested? Its illegal to camp down there. So I have to assume that the money we spent sweeping the area to rid it of transients recently was for naught? I suppose we're afraid of lawsuits even by the homeless...GOOD GRIEF!!

Why cite them they can not pay the fines, and arresting them will only cost the county more money beside where would you like them to live?? The county does not have enough beds or shelter for them all

I'D LIKE THEM TO LIVE IN ANOTHER COUNTY SCOTTY! For those deserving, I'm all for shelter and providing assistance. But call me "old school" because in my day, those that didn't try to help themselves get out of that rut were called "BUMS" or "HOBO'S"! OK....now we'll hear from the politically correct police next!

Ambz...I served OUR country from 1963-1966 and I can bake a cake any day of the week nor am I seeking any tax dollars for assistance. I'm not panhandling on the streets or bothering anybody except you posters here. You've seen the couples at the entrances to strip malls with their signs that read, "Homeless Veteran.....will work for food", etc. I stopped at Carl's Jr. on Victoria and bought them a combo not too long ago and they threw it at me, all the while calling me every name in the book! Those "homeless veterans" make more money than you and me combined! Time for you to break out your Betty Crocker cookbook my friend!

SF1943 - No one was sited or arrested for starting the fire... duh. Yes, police do sweeps, but where do you think the homeless go immediately after they are "swept" out... right back to where they came from. Why don't you just start rounding them up and sending them on busses to the county of your choice. Come on, get real. These people are a part of our society and we have to live with it. We have no idea why each one of them is in the situation that they are in. Don't generalize. It's just ignorant.
