BlackBerry service out in N. America

NEW YORK (AP) An outage has disconnected BlackBerry smart phones across North America.

AT&T Inc. says the disruption Monday is affecting all wireless carriers. AT&T first learned about the problem at about 3:30 p.m. EST.

There's no word on the cause or when the problem might be fixed.

BlackBerry maker Research in Motion did not immediately return a phone call.

The phone portion is working on the city-owned Blackberry used by Andrew Powers, public information officer for the city of Thousand Oaks. He said it's his interoffice e-mail that is out.

"It is not pulling any new e-mails in," he said today. "The last e-mail I have on here is from 4:55 p.m. yesterday."

For now, Powers is using his personal iPhone, logging into the Web and checking his e-mail remotely.

A spokesman from AT&T Inc. said it was informed by RIM at about 3:30 p.m. EST Monday that the disruption is affecting all North American-wireless carriers. The problem is on RIM's end, not AT&T's, he added.

Wall Street Journal reported online that an AT&T spokesman said the disruption means that BlackBerry users could experience difficulty accessing data and e-mail on their devices.
