Aspiring student photographers will have an opportunity to show their work and earn scholarship dollars through a special intergenerational art program. Agoura Hills Senior Retreat (AHSR), an assisted living community located in Agoura Hills, is sponsoring the student photography scholarship opportunity themed "From Generation to Generation."

Ahuva Barzion, an amateur photographer and educator in charge of special projects at the senior retreat, said that the inspiration for the program came from the residents, many who are artists or support the arts. (Last year's recipient of the Salute America--there's a Winner in You lifetime achievement award was resident painter Norma Robinson Smith.) Barzion was giving residents an armchair travel show with her own pictures and found the residents' artistic comments on her work very impressive. "I started to think how I might connect their insights to the youth who could benefit from it," she said.

Student submissions will be judged at a special reception on March 30, 2008 by the senior retreat's residents and members of the community. Winners will receive scholarship awards in the amounts of 1st Place: $300; 2nd Place: $200; and 3rd Place: $100 to be used toward courses or supplies for advancing the students' interests in the arts. All entries will be on display in a special exhibit at the senior retreat.

"Generations seemed the ideal subject to engage both ends of the age spectrum," said Barzion, who added the subject concept is not just limited to people. "Generations can be in many things: cars, fashion, homes...we are excited to see what the students capture."

The contest is open to all high school and college photography students. Participants may enter a maximum of two digital or film format photographs sized 12"x18", 16"x20", or 18"x24" on the theme "From Generation to Generation," which can be human or non-human subjects. Entries should include student's name, school and contact information. Photos must be received no later than 02/29/08. They can be mailed to or brought into Agoura Hills Senior Retreat, 5217 Chesebro Road, Agoura Hills, CA 91301. Entrants should note photos may not be returned and Agoura Hills Senior Retreat has the right to use its discretion to select photos appropriate for exhibiting. The exhibition will be judged on Sunday, March 30, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm at Agoura Hills Senior Retreat. Additional questions should be directed to Ahuva Barzion by email ahuvab@ahseniorretreat.com or by phone (818) 991-3544.
