Unseasonable heat breaks city records
Oxnard's high temperature of 82 degrees Saturday set a record high for the date, one that had stood since the Beatles took America by storm.
The previous record of 81 degrees was set on Feb. 9, 1964, the same day the Beatles made their U.S. debut on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and changed pop music history.
Ventura County and much of Southern California basked in warm temperatures Saturday as a high pressure area off the coast ramped up in intensity and caused the air mass over the area to warm up, said Bill Hoffer, a National Weather Service spokesman in Oxnard.
Camarillo and Fillmore also hit 82 degrees Saturday. Simi Valley reached 81 degrees, Ojai hit 80 degrees, and Ventura and Thousand Oaks saw highs of 78.
Joining Oxnard as places that touched the record books Saturday were the UCLA campus, which hit 85 degrees, besting the 84-degree mark set Feb. 9, 1996, and Torrance, where the 80-degree reading tied the mark set on the date in 1964.
Record high temperatures could be in jeopardy over the next two days; Weather Service forecasts now indicate that temperatures may not cool significantly until Wednesday.
"After all," Hoffer said, "this is Southern California. It's nice here. People from other parts of the country want to come out here this time of year."
