Somis School Goes To The Polls
Diane Roche'
Somis School Vice Principal, Patti Pape and students Hugo Galvez, Austin Hedrick, Diana Ramos and Sarah Martinez get voting instructions from Poll Volunteer, Grace Kelly on February 5th.
The 7th and 8th grade students took a field trip to the Somis Polling Place on Tuesday for the California Primary Election. Many of these students will vote in the 2012 presidential election, and it was Somis School teacher, Shirley Otero's goal to "de-mystify the process" for these students and show them how easy it is to vote.
The poll volunteers at Faith Baptist Church in Somis were friendly and helpful. Poll inspector, Ellen Maxson spoke to the students and answered questions. The students were able to see that the poll volunteers were as approachable as a good neighbor or grandparent. In fact, 7th grade student, Libby Rail and her classmates observed her grandmother and poll volunteer, Jan Trembley-Rail help voters at the registration table.
The Somis School students walked back to school knowing that when it's time for them to vote, they will be ready.
