Restaurant's roof catches on fire

An Oxnard restaurant was damaged by a fire early Tuesday, authorities said.

Firefighters responded about 12:30 a.m. to Bamboo Stix, 1051 S. Oxnard Blvd., after motorists reported smoke coming from the building, said Battalion Chief Gary Sugich of the Oxnard Fire Department. Firefighters spotted flames on the restaurant’s roof and ceiling, Sugich said.

The building’s sprinkler system activated, and firefighters extinguished the flames in about 10 minutes. They stayed on scene for three hours to mop up, Sugich said.

“If the sprinkler system hadn’t been there, that fire would have been much worse,” said Sugich, who estimated it caused $50,000 damage to the building and contents.

No one was injured. The cause of the fire was undetermined Tuesday, Sugich said.
