Rare 50 year Arctic Blast Sets Sights On Southern California.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA - December 8, 2008 (OWSweather.com) Rare 50 year Arctic Blast Sets Sights On Southern California.
With a week away, and a sure sign of things to come, OWSweather.com is making preparations on the server to handle the traffic from this next event. UJEAS is in line with the majority if not all the other models in keeping a near historical arctic air mass into the Southern California region.
With a warm November, Southern California is finally ready for cold storms to make their way in. Resort level snow will be likely next week, and in pretty hefty amounts if things stay on track. OWSweather.com Meteorologist Kevin Martin predicts a 50 year event. While Martin is usually conservative on these events, the pattern highly favors it. "We are in a pre-1950 type pattern, "said Martin. "We know we are due for a winter storm sometime this year. The type we may be dealing with will be ranked up there with the known years before 1950, which set record low daytime temperatures into the forecast region. With this, may come low elevation snow."
Forecaster Cameron Venable is seeing very cold temperatures in the Los Angeles areas as well. Torrance is not usually known for winter weather, thus making this an interesting event for Venable to track.
"Temperatures in Siberia, Russia will be -81 degrees this week, "said Martin. "With those type of temperatures the arctic air mass has to spill somewhere. Our answer of the exact track will become more clear this week. All residents in the mountain communities should prepare this week for very cold, winter weather, with snow."
Indications are a second, colder storm could hit near the 18th-22nd time-frame. The details on that will have to be sorted out.

If this pans out, the local homeless shelters can expect a big spike in the nightly registrations of homeless. It is the rain that drives the high numbers, but combined with freezing temperatures, it will cause an overflow at available cold weather shelters. I hope they are ready.

Yay! Global Warming! Now where's Manbearpig and Al Gore?

Oh, I get it! Despite the fact that climate change is cyclical and NOT man-made and we've just finished a "warming" cycle, the "cooling" cycle about to hit is suddenly a RARE Arctic Blast? When are the idiots of the world going to realize that this is simply a reminder from Mother Nature that Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth is the best hoax of the 21st century???!!! Gore's changing of terms from global warming to climate change shows just how stupid he truly is!...and how gullible (and greedy) his followers are! Perhaps if people hadn't been so gullible, homeless shelters would be prepared for this "rare artic blast" that hasn't hit town since 1975!

AmericanBelle We're ready in Ojai, even for other natural or man made disasters. The Red Cross would be in our way. It's the funding for other shelters that prevents them being adequately prpared. They rely primarily on government funding, which gets cut while costs rise.

One cold winter does not a trend make. As the Earth warms, the atmosphere is becoming more dynamic and unpredictable, with enough latent heat energy to force the cold air out of the Artic. It is warming and your big fat-a$$ SUV is contributing, along with methane released from beneath the melting tundra. The Artic Ocean sea ice has just about disappeared. So nice try rednecks, but you're still lame!

Global warming and environmentalism are distractions. As the mass media creates climate illusions, Big Brother clamps down by opening our mail, suspending habeas corpus, stealing private lands, banning books like "America Deceived" from Amazon, rigging elections, conducting warrantless wiretaps and starting wars based on blatant lies. Prevent our loss of rights then handle the 'environment' crisis.

SUVs are creating “enough latent heat energy to force the cold air out of the Artic” --- it is always funny so what the far left write. All of the SUVs on the planet multiplied by 1,000,000 could not force artic air masses out of Siberia.
A more true statement would be that H8War’s “latent heat energy” keeps rising from the big pie hole, calling anyone who disagrees a “redneck” (H8War would not be a true far left liberal without calling names!)
The “warming” Earth: the “atmosphere is becoming more dynamic and unpredictable” ---- Ahhhhhhhhhhhh! I get it! So when the weather get’s cold and become’s inconvenient for Al Gore’s “Inconvenient Truth” then the convenient thing to say is that global warming is causing cold winters when it’s cold AND that global warming is causing the mild winters when it is warm!!!!!

Hey HG8War, if the next five winters in S. Cal get this RARE 50 Year Artic Blast will you concede then ?
Or, would you like to debate de-forestation and solar spots as possible global warming agents ?
Or, Scientist have also noted that the Northern Ice Caps on Mars have lost some 25% ice, they have found no evidence of Soccer Moms, yet.

I don't usually do this, but the rampant blindness is killing me. The article states that the temperatures in Siberia, where these arctic air masses usually reside, is an amazing 81 below. The incredibly low temperatures are causing the arctic air mass extend to lower latitudes. If you want to talk about science and make claims such as "heat causes cold", please be certain you understand what you're talking about. It might help your cause.

Clearly, if those of you who are commenting on this as an indicator of Global Warming being a hoax, you're entirely uninformed by the information and haven't bothered to read anything outside of your non-scientific FOX news coverage.
The better way to look at this is climate destabilization, what we're seeing is more unpredictability due to a general warming across the globe. This doesn't mean you won't have cold days, doesn't mean it will always be hot, it just means that regional climates will hit more extremes more often.
A cold snap is just that, a snap shot of the weather at that moment. Treat it for what it is, something rather remarkable considering some of the cold weather from last year as well.

I’m not laughing at Al Gore because I think he is a criminal participating in a criminal conspiracy.
We need more guys like Kevin Martin to make informed and reasoned weather forecasts
It's "Climate Change" because "Global Warming" has been busted for some time now. It is always possible to find corroborating data to ‘prove’ any c---amamie theory. That is NOT scientific proof of anything. That is advocacy of a pre-determined position. It works for con artists, politicians and lawyers, but not science.
The Siberian cold front, that may be heading our way, does not in itself refute the IPCC’s claims, but it certainly does not help their position on global warming and its cause(s).
It also doesn’t help when the supporting data has been “adjusted”, to make the AGW climate model spew out the predetermined results.
The sea level has not been rising as predicted or the Maldives would be noticing it on their well established reference mark. The satellite microwave altimetry data from 1992 to 2003 originally confirmed that the sea level was not rising at anywhere near the rate predicted, so the raw data was ‘adjusted’ to fit the theoretical model.
It was “weather amateurs” that took pictures of the “official” temperature stations that have been re-located near heating vents, south facing walls, and on paved areas when they were formerly in open fields with unobstructed air circulation. Not surprising that they show a recent “jump” in temperature readings.
Whatever the new “carbon robber barons” want to call themselves, it is plain robbery to charge for carbon emissions. IMO it is a criminal conspiracy which is already killing people in the name of “Saving the Planet”.
I would hope that the planet does get warmer and that the co2 level remains high. That will make for a more healthy planet, better food supplies from newly created prime agricultural land. Let’s hope that the lack of sunspots does not presage another Maunder Minimum.

Regardless of a degree, which is only to get a job in the industry, Kevin has managed to learn on his own, and being I am to understand he has a disorder that allows him to tap into the patterns and numbers (whatever that means) is how he can do this.
Degree or not, Kevin knows what he is talking about, and often more so than the ones with degrees. Weather is a science. Anyone can learn it with passion. Like sports.

I lived in socal till 2005--now I am in Coeur d' Alene Idaho, 100 miles south of the Canadian border..next week we expect highs in the high teens and lows around 0-5 degrees--I guess we get the blast a little early? This whole climate change hype is rediculous..the planet is by its nature always in flux--I have witnessed extreme temp swings in my lifetime..but to watch the weather channel or other media outlet you'd think the world was out of control everytime a storm rolls thru any part of the country--its all part of nature, something we have no control over--maybe THAT is what has got Al Gore and Heidi Cullen's panties in such a bunch--they realize there is something going on they cant control!

Mother nature is just proving what the "fringe" (aka the majority) has know for years. Global warming/climate change is a scam. But for the reality deniers there is also scientific proof
The atmospheric greenhouse effect, an idea that authors trace back to the traditional
works of Fourier 1824, Tyndall 1861, and Arrhenius 1896, and which is still supported
in global climatology, essentially describes a fictitious mechanism, in which a planetary
atmosphere acts as a heat pump driven by an environment that is radiatively interacting
with but radiatively equilibrated to the atmospheric system. According to the second law
of thermodynamics such a planetary machine can never exist. Nevertheless, in almost
all texts of global climatology and in a widespread secondary literature it is taken for
granted that such mechanism is real and stands on a firm scientific foundation. In
this paper the popular conjecture is analyzed and the underlying physical principles are
clarified. By showing that (a) there are no common physical laws between the warming
phenomenon in glass houses and the fictitious atmospheric greenhouse effects, (b) there
are no calculations to determine an average surface temperature of a planet, (c) the
frequently mentioned difference of 33 C is a meaningless number calculated wrongly,
(d) the formulas of cavity radiation are used inappropriately, (e) the assumption of a
radiative balance is unphysical, (f) thermal conductivity and friction must not be set to
zero, the atmospheric greenhouse conjecture is falsified.

Every time there's a story about a freeze or unusually cold weather, ignorant people bring up global warming and laugh. Global warming doesn't mean temperatures will get hotter everywhere all at once. It means the normal weather patterns will turn to chaos. Expect unusual weather patterns more frequently including cold where there usually isn't and rain or drought where there usually aren't.

Thanks RobertG22 for the great link. Your comment had "Science" rather than "prostelyze" written all over it. Following the link, I learned that you had cut and pasted the abstract from the 114 page paper that rather thoroughly falsifies the "greenhouse conjecture". More people should know and understand that "consensus" is a political term, not a scientific term and has nothing to do with scientific "truth".
BTW, Terry Schaeffer is our local "go to" weather guy in Ventura and Santa Barbara County for Fruit frost predictions involving our multi-billion dollar agricultural industry here. His forecast is not as dire as Kevin's (yet).
I don't know how Kevin Martin or Terry Schaeffer came to their skills. To me, being self taught shows a higher degree of inspiration, motivation, perspiration and sometimes, desperation.

Yah got me...I am so jealous that I am not a fake meteorologist on the internet.
Explain again how your fearless leader can forecast weather after getting hit in the head with a lightning bolt and invented a new form of math. Better yet, my favorite was the time on another forum where he claimed to be from a different planet.

Jon let me ask you something. What is this?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicolaus...
Copernicus was an astronomer. He learned on his own. Kevin Martin is a METEOROLOGIST period. Copernicus did not graduate because of certain problems.
Kevin's stance is passion and drive in weather. I've seen him become so accurate in the shorter term that it amazes me. I don't know where you heard the lightning story. The press fabricates a lot of stuff. However Mr. Martin does not mention this when talking to the press. If you heard it on the internet, then it is some wacko jealous person like you.
The problem and point of this is.
A degree is only if you want to be accepted into a job offer in the field. A degree does not tell if you are smarter than someone else. Kevin Martin has a gift. A gift of recognizing patterns and numbers. He is twice the weather guy anyone will ever be because of his PASSION and DRIVE. Get off this site. You are from New Jersey and we are from Southern California. We know how OUR METEOROLOGIST KEVIN MARTIN forecasts on a daily basis. Your post will be flagged for removal from this day out.

Copernicus? Are you seriously comparing yourselves to Copernicus?
First off, Copernicus lived in a time where education of any kind was rare. If OWS is such a genius, certainly then getting a degree in meteorology should be easy. The US has the largest and most accessible higher education system in the world.
And I'm sorry a degree DOES MATTER....just because I can do my own taxes doesn't make me a CPA, just because I read a lot of medical books doesn't make me a doctor....and just because someone follows the weather closely, has knowledge of it, and has a passion for it does not make them a meteorologist...it makes them an intense hobbyist, or an amateur forecaster...and the day that you, Kevin, Josh etc present yourselves as such instead of this silly game of insisting on being called a meteorologist when you have not earned that title is the day that you will stop having people question your credibility in every forum you enter.

Mods, please have Jon's IP blocked from this site and all his posts removed. He doesn't understand that medical science is different than earth science.

With met jobs going down the drain and layoffs I think Kevin Martin is in a fine position to do private meteorology.

WxMan...
Your friend is a weather enthusiast....by his own admission he does not have a degree, and unless someone has been paying him to forecast, he is not yet a professional.

Mods can ban me if they want, but I would suggest they look into who Kevin Martin is and what OWS is.

In this thread on another site is where I first heard of OWS....read and judge for yourselves...

Can someone explain to me what the hell they're even predicting? I have yet to see anything specific like a forecast out of the norm.
It's not like they're the only one's that know about the cold coming...the guy up in Mammoth have had it in the forecast for a good long while...
Posted by Wxman on December 11, 2008 at 7:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I took a look at that. That is someone sabotaging Kevin Martin once again. You just don't get it. You people are trying to ruin him because he is that great.
I urge the Ventura Star to stop listening to people about Kevin. You guys have no right or room to speak about someone like that and worse yet SPREAD RUMORS. That is totally illegal do you understand?

vtarider - Sorry Kevin said this before Thanksgiving to people that follow him. You need to follow more closely to Kevin's stuff. The guy in mammoth has nothing on Kevin whatsoever. He can stay in Mammoth. This isn't mammoth.

And JonInJersey is one of these guys Kevin talks about.

Stay away from these guys at all costs. They are laid off weatherman that are jealous Kevin is on his own.

Hey guess what? I'm neither laid off, nor am I a meteorologist.
Sorry that I keep posting things he has said himself over the last two years.
I am a weather hobbyist who has posted on various forums, and before that on IRC.
How many forums have I been banned from? To date, none.
How many has OWS/Kevin been banned from?

Kevin is close to me. Saved my life from the fire storm of 2007. I took off work two weeks in advance to be at home with my family to get off the mountain. Here is a letter Kevin gave to me from a contact.
I can tell this is what you are. Coward, making up stuff. Kevin Martin is framed across the net for doing what knows is RIGHT. Save lives.
Again, COWARD.
"Put question/comment/complaint here: Dear Kevin,
Keep up the good work. You do very well in your forcasting.
As for the internet attacks mentioned in your news release, I know it's hard
to take. Just remember, If you're being attacked, you must be doing something
right. The people who are attacking are cowards.
Stay the course.

What explaination do deniers say is the reason for the shrinking ice in Greenland? Or what about the extensive loss of glaciers in mountains around the world from the Himalayas to Mt Kilimanjaro to the Swiss Alps? Is quantitative measurements of ice melting at alarming rates not considered?

UN Blowback: More Than 650 International Scientists Dissent Over Man-Made Global Warming Claims
POZNAN, Poland - The UN global warming conference currently underway in Poland is about to face a serious challenge from over 650 dissenting scientists from around the globe who are criticizing the climate claims made by the UN IPCC and former Vice President Al Gore. Set for release this week, a newly updated U.S. Senate Minority Report features the dissenting voices of over 650 international scientists, many current and former UN IPCC scientists, who have now turned against the UN. The report has added about 250 scientists (and growing) in 2008 to the over 400 scientists who spoke out in 2007. The over 650 dissenting scientists are more than 12 times the number of UN scientists (52) who authored the media hyped IPCC 2007 Summary for Policymakers.

So why are glaciers melting and ice melting in the Artic and Antartic?
Posted by surfmedic91 on December 12, 2008 at 3:38 p.m. (Suggest removal)
marketrealist, ever been to the "antartic"? It's Antarctica. During the summer, which is now, the ice is constantly melting. In 20 degree weather the ice will still melt. McMurdo Station is almost free of ice on the ground this time of year.

We have just been looking through old family pictures. Here in Camarillo, sometime in the late 1940s or maybe the winter of 50, we had enough snow south of Vta. Blvd for my oldest sister to build a little snowman, about 24" high. In the pictures, the grass is dusted with snow - no blanket, just white with grass blades sticking up.
White Christmas, anyone?

It takes me a good 1/2 hour to drive to the beach. With Al's statement it sounded like I'll have ocean front property within my lifetime.
Cold.... ba. California doesn't know what cold is! Go further north like Montana and Canada... where temps are below zero. ... cold or rain for that matter... "it's raining buckets" Cali people note *eye roll* it's misting to me.
I'm still curious on why people have umbrellas up on overcasts/sunny days.

Desperate Double Speak: Global Cooling Is Part Of Global Warming
Paul Joseph Watson & Steve Watson
Prison Planet.com
Tuesday, December 16, 2008
An Associated Press article has stunned some readers by suggesting that an ongoing global cooling trend is actually indicative of how quickly the planet is succumbing to man-made global warming.
The bizarre statement appeared in a panic-inducing article that emphasizes man-made warming fears and highlights how president elect Obama must tackle them with new laws including a carbon tax “cap-and-trade” system.
“Mother Nature, of course, is oblivious to the federal government’s machinations.” writes Seth Borenstein.
“Ironically, 2008 is on pace to be a slightly cooler year in a steadily rising temperature trend line. Experts say it’s thanks to a La Nina weather variation. While skeptics are already using it as evidence of some kind of cooling trend, it actually illustrates how fast the world is warming.”
The article goes on to state:
“Since Clinton’s inauguration, summer Arctic sea ice has lost the equivalent of Alaska, California and Texas. The 10 hottest years on record have occurred since Clinton’s second inauguration. Global warming is accelerating. Time is close to running out, and Obama knows it.”
Chief global warming propagandists the World Wildlife Fund released a report earlier this year claiming that Arctic ice was shrinking at an alarming rate, leading to forecasts that the “North Pole may be ice-free for first time this summer”.
Such predictions were debunked after it emerged that Arctic ice had actually expanded 30 per cent, an area the size of Germany, a fact conveniently overlooked by the WWF.
Meanwhile temperatures have hit record lows in Denver and Montana as the Northeast United States experiences some of the worst snow and ice storms for a generation.
2008 is the coldest year of the decade and record low temperatures have hit areas all over America.
This has little to do with a “weather variation” and everything to do with the fact that the chief climate driver throughout eons of natural climate change - the sun - has exhibited a record barren spell of sunspots, which is causing the global cooling we are now witnessing all over the world. Conversely, throughout the 1990’s and in the early years of this decade, during which global warming reached its peak, the sun was more active than it had been at anytime in the previous 1,000 years.
The most recent period during which solar activity massively decreased was between 1645 and 1715, known as the Maunder Minimum, which also coincided with the geological period known as the Little Ice Age, when temperatures plummeted all over the world and the Thames in London was frozen solid.

The fact that the corporate media has openly abandoned any pretense of balance and fully thrown its weight behind the religious fervor of global warming - an orthodoxy that refuses to allow anyone to question its supreme and absolute dogma - again highlights how desperate the climate change PR assault has become in the face of over 650 scientists signing their names to a US Senate Minority report that challenges the contention of the UN’s International Panel on Climate Change that there is a scientific “consensus” on the causes of global warming.
Now that the real catalyst behind climate change, the sun, has dealt a blow to the global warming propagandists by daring to produce less sunspots, the climate change lobby will now merely claim that global cooling is a part of global warming, and that we must still lower our living standards and pay carbon taxes, while all the real environmental problems are ignored or actively made worse by the same power brokers demanding that we make sacrifices in the name of fighting a non-existent threat.

surfmedic91, you did not answer the question, if people deny that the climate is warming, what is the reason behind the melting of the polar ice caps and the glaciers?

Remember when the scientists thought Y2K would crash and burn our financial, transportation, military, and communications systems? Never happened.
And remember when the asteroid was supposed to hit? Never happened.
And remember the Ozone hole that was supposed to let through all that UV radiation and give everyone skin cancer? It closed up. (Ice cores they later drilled in the artic, proved that the hole is a cyclical occurrence that has happened throughout history.)
Does global warming exist? They talk of a one degree temperature warming over the past century. How accurate were thermometers 100 years ago? How many measurements did they make?
I suppose we could err on the safe side and embark on a trillion dollar program to reduce our "carbon footprint". But remember what the enviromentalists and biologists forced us into with the ozone hole. A world wide ban on freon for air conditioning. What happened? Mechanics across the country VENTED the freon from millions of cars to install the currently used, and less efficient R-134 coolant. What kind of damage did the venting occur? Besides this, the less efficient coolant means millions of additional gallons of gas have been consumed to run air conditioners. How has THAT influenced "global warming"?
We need less emotional Al Gore / Greenpeace types weighing in on this issue, and more engineers to do SERIOUS study of the issue. And we need to let the engineers who know something about cars design them.
