Playing a Gig

September 24, 2008 was a beautiful Southern California afternoon, but not for Fred Schmitt. Lady Luck was not straddling the passenger's seat on his motorcycle that day like she had been since 1972.

Riding eastbound on the 150, a car pulled out in front of him - the force of which broke both arms and landed him on the hood of the car. Panicking, the driver proceeded to pull away and then slammed on the brakes. This caused Fred to windmill and land in a supine position on the pavement breaking his pelvis in three places. Twelve hours of surgery, 28 days in the hospital, plates & pins holding him together, he is on the road to recovery. Saddled with bright optimism toward that recovery, it is a slow and painful process.

For those who do not know Fred: Father of five, motorcyclist, prolific songwriter, guitar, piano & harmonica player, performer, music producer, sound engineer, music teacher and promoter of the Hillside Festival.

The benefit starts with a motorcycle ride leaving from Entry Way on E. El Roblar at 10:00 am. If you are not going on the ride, then The Deer Lodge part of the benefit runs from 1:00 pm. 'til late. Highlights: Local musicians including Dr. Surf and Euphoria. Happy hour priced drinks/appetizers. Silent auction. Special guest performance by Fred.

Let's pull together and show some compassion for this humble man. If you can't make it, and would like to donate, please go to fredschmittmusic.com.
