"The pool is less hectic during the winter," says Erin Pierik, senior program director at the Simi Y. "Because our pool is indoors, it doesn't matter what the weather is outside. The pool stays at a very comfortable 84 degrees."

Having kids water safe before summer is another advantage to winter and spring swim lessons. "Many kids are often around water all year long," says Pierik. "The sooner they are water safe the better. Plus, the classes provide great exercise even when it's too cold to play outside."

The YMCA swim programs encompass five components: personal growth, personal safety, stroke development, water sports and games, and rescue. "The YMCA has been teaching people how to swim for more than 100 years," notes Pierik. "It's truly a time-tested approach that is a model for all other swim programs."

Lessons take place during the mornings, after school, evenings and on Saturdays. Classes are also available in the spring, 2009 (March 2 through April 25 and April 27 through June 13).
