Panel approves purchase of parcel for possible ice rink
The Camarillo Community Development Commission, which consists of all five City Council members, has approved the purchase of 12 acres that could provide a new site for the Channel Islands Ice Center.
The vacant land is in the western part of the city near Home Depot and is expected to become accessible by road when Ventura Boulevard is extended.
The Ice Center is currently in the Wagon Wheel district of Oxnard, which is slated for redevelopment. The owners of the rink, the Channel Islands Figure Skating Club and the Channel Islands Riptide Hockey Club, are looking for a new location in western Ventura County.
Although the ice rink is a possibility for the site, Camarillo City Manager Jerry Bankston said, the property could have a variety of uses, including the relocation of businesses in an area to be redeveloped into Camarillo Commons. No formal plans have been made for the ice rink.
The commission voted 5-0 to purchase the property for up to $3.5 million.
