Student found with gun at Hueneme High School, arrested

A Hueneme high school student was arrested this morning after he allegedly brought a loaded gun to campus, police said.
The 16-year-old boy was detained in the lobby of Hueneme High School at 500 W. Bard Road in Oxnard when he walked in about 11 a.m., said Cmdr. Tom Chronister of the Oxnard Police Department.
School Resource Officer Brian Bishop, who happened to be in the lobby at the time, stopped the student because he wanted to talk to him about a verbal altercation the student was involved in on campus the day before, Chronister said.
When Bishop was patting down the student to see if he had any weapons, he found a loaded .380 semi-automatic pistol wrapped in a shirt the student was carrying, Chronister said.
The juvenile, a suspected gang member, was arrested without incident, police said.
He was booked into Juvenile Hall on suspicion of felony possession of a firearm on a school campus.
The boy is on probation.
Officers searched his home but did not find any additional contraband, police said.
"The actions of Officer Bishop could have averted a tragedy on the campus today," Chronister said. "Kids don't bring guns to campus without a purpose."

Way to start the school year. Great job Officer Bishop. Whatever happened to kids settling their differences with a fight after school? Now if anyone feels "disrespected" in the least bit they are ready to commit murder.

Thank goodness this boy was stopped. This could have been a tragedy.
Let's hope he stays in Juvie for a while and re-thinks his affiliations.

OMG! How scary, I have three nieces that go to that school, excellent work Officer Bishop. I wonder why they do not have metal detector's, I believe Rio Mesa has them not sure why they do not have them at all schools, elementary, junior high and high schools.

Wow. Every year at HHS, the first few months weed out the kids that wouldn't make it through the whole year. The first week is always full of fights and problems. For some reason, I'm not surprised.

No offense intended, but it is very likely not gonna do ANY good locking him up in juvenile hall. My cynical guess is he has formed, and will likely stay that way. Sorry, but it is likely this is how he is going to be forever.

Good job, Officer Bishop. A trajedy could have and most likely would have happened had he not been standing in that office when that kid walked through. Officer Bishop has been working the "gang/tagger" beat for a number of years and is very familiar and extremely knowledgeable about most of these punks. He does an EXCELLENT job!

Only God knows how many lives you saved today, Officer Bishop!

Wow! This was another disaster on the verge of happening like E.O. Green. Thank you Mr. Bishop for being so diligent. I send you a hardy "Sierra Hotel" and "Brovo Zulu."

This is one of the main reasons We have moved out of the State of California. The state we live in now doesnt have the kind of incidents that California does. I really feel for the teachers that have to "Try" and educate these kids that have no intentions of being educated. Its very sad.
We have some friends that are OPD officers and this is a big Way to Go for Officer Bishop!
They need more attentive officers like him.

Appreciate your sentiments, and your having moved, which is what we will do one day, but not likely before everyone in the family is out of high school. Just be mindful of your apparent confidence in this never happening in the place you live. Many, too many, small communities felt the same way, and look at what happened. Keep praying, and be ever-mindful that it can happen anywhere.

What an absolute shame! I remember when I went over to the administraive offices at Hueneme High to let them know that I was the Chairman of the 40th Reunion Committee representing the first graduating class of 1961! This was in 2001, for our 40th get together and I had to enter through 6" steel doors and then observed Police Officers patrolling the grounds with police dogs! It was like an armed camp! Not so when I and many others will attest as to how it was like when Hueneme High was first built. If anybody out there that was a Hueneme High School graduate for 1961, you'll see that the student body did not warrant such behaviour by campus police, et al.....there wasn't any while I was there! But one thing that I can attest to is that a number of classmates are passing along at an alarming rate! I guess that goes with our age bracket!...:-))

And people wonder why I gave back my life-time membership to the NRA many years ago.

Sneed_Hearn, so true. I likely know you. I was at SC at the time and knew many class of the Hueneme '61 students.
The world is a different place; although it may not have seemed like it at the time, we were in a kinder, gentler time.

There is too much of this kind of thing happening at our schools. Schools need to go back to closed campus and get metal detectors. How in the world can we let this go on!!!
This is getting way out of conrtol. Good thing Officer Bishop was right there and took control of the situation in time. Good job officer!!! This kid needs to learn a very hard lesson and needs the maximum sentance allowed, especially since he is a gang member.
Like another poster said, there used to be metal doors there years ago. Maybe it is time to bring them back. And where in the world are these kids getting these guns. A 16 year old kid in a gang? I don't know...sad.

Good job that Officer Bishop followed up on the fight.
I wonder how many chances this gangster has been given and how long his criminal record is.

Yes, I gave up my membership. Wrote them a letter and told them to take me off their rolls. Of course many years later I realize I should have stayed on so I could fight them from the inside. A fifth column if you like.

What is this...the second or third day of school and this kid already had a verbal altercation and THEN brings a gun to school! Applauding the Officer!

Catinahat....we may know each other. I grew up on East Laurel St. right next to Santa Clara. I ran around with Dck Burns for a long time, who graduated from SC in 1961. I left a band I had to join The Mixtures (remember them?) and I turned my band over to Dick and it became "The Dartells" that had a big hit with "Hot Pastrami".

Sneed_Hearn: I grew up on East Kamala St., attended Hueneme H.S. for my freshman year and then moved over to Channel Islands when they opened their doors in 65-66. Graduated from C.I. in 69 but back in those friendlier times we all co-mingled with SC, OHS, HHS and CI...good times!! Too bad the youth of today's Oxnard are missing out on those good times. And I certainly remember the Dartells!! (as well as weekly dances at the Hueneme Rec center!)
As a native of Oxnard I had very mixed feelings about leaving a couple years ago but knew it was for a more peaceful life elsewhere....and the comfort of knowing my grandkids would not be dodging bullets at their school. I will be the first to say there is no such place as paradise but there are sure as he** a lot more safer places to live than the 'nard. I will always be resentful that the last several governing bodies, mayor et al, allowed Oxnard to become the gang infested, high crime area it is today.
Back to the article.....I think we should all say a prayer for Officer Bishop. That kid he took aside to "talk" to had a loaded gun in his possession - God was on Officer Bishop's shoulder today.

Officer Bishop you should be applauded for stopping what could have been another school shooting. This 16 year old needs help and guidance not prison time.Someone should have helped King and Brandon earlier than did.

It is sad that our schools are in such failing and are very dangerous. When I was in school, (60s, early 70s), schools were safe and upstanding. Other than minor fist fights here and there, the kids got along. When the liberals took over the education system, that's when the downslide occurred. There is no discipline; and the kids know it. They treat underachievers as if they achieved something. And the list goes on and on.
Read Thomas Sowell's book: "Inside American Education." The first seven pages are enough to make you depressed.

Way to go Ofc Bishop you make every citizen who lives and visits Oxnard a safer place. Support the NRA. OPD is a great department.

Let's see...just when exactly was it that God was kicked out of school? You do the math and figure out the downslide. Hmmm...probably about the same time those liberals referred to by NowHearThis was referring to.
