More from Naval Base Ventura County
DORALE, Djibouti - An element of 31 Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 4, based out of Naval Base Ventura County, Calif. volunteered for a Joint Service Community Assistance Volunteers (CAV) project, August 16, 2008 while deployed to the Combined Joint Task Force- Horn of Africa.
With cleaning supplies, paint, brushes, paint rollers and plenty of drinking water, the CAV team, which consisted of Seabees, Soldiers and Marines, helped in the process of refurbishing the Ecole De Dorale Childrens School by cleaning the inside and applying a fresh coat of paint to the interior and exterior.
"This project is a necessity for the community because it will give the children a chance to receive a proper education," said NMCB 4's Builder Constructionman Apprentice Jenell Chase." Seeing the excitement of the children who will be attending this school gives me a good feeling and a sense of pride knowing that my participation in this project will make a lasting impression for years to come."
Volunteering for the project was not a problem for Builder 1st Class (SCW) Bruce Spradlin, Petty Officer in Charge of NMCB 4 Seabee volunteers.
"When we (NMCB 4 Seabees) first arrived at this school, I could see that there was a large amount of work to be done." said Spradlin. "Regardless of the present conditions, we all worked together as one team and made a major improvement to the school."
Ecole De Dorale is a school for children ages six through sixteen. The CAV team, through donations and fundraisers, has future plans for this school, which consist of painting the remaining areas, overhauling the electrical system to ensure the safety of the teachers and children, and a bathroom facility.
