Editorial: What will the future hold?

Clinton weighs her next move

Psychologically, Hillary Clinton faces a demanding fall.

If she wants a political future beyond the Senate, the former first lady must not be seen as going less than all out to elect Barack Obama, even though relations between the two camps can charitably described as strained.

Sen. Clinton's very gracious and warm speech Tuesday night at the Denver convention, touching all the right notes, including a tactful nod to her husband's presidency, showed that she is fully capable of that role and even of sharing attack-dog duties with Obama running mate Sen. Joe Biden.

But, in her heart, there has to be some ambivalence. You know that when she was on the podium with her tearful supporters cheering her name that at same level she was thinking, "This should have been ours."

If Obama loses — and the polls indicate that for all the Republicans' woes and the baggage of President Bush, he is not a sure thing come November — she would have the satisfaction of saying, certainly in private, "I told you so," and the way would be clear for another run for the White House in 2012.

Since her healthcare debacle, she has proved capable of learning from her mistakes, and a second campaign for the presidency would be freer of the mismanagement and infighting that hobbled her first.

Even though she finished a close but indubitable second for her party's nomination, she is perhaps our most remarkable politician and, even though Sen. Obama's people might wish otherwise, Bill and Hillary Clinton will remain formidable fixtures in the Democratic Party.

Their approval ratings with the Democratic faithful hover around 80 percent. Sen. Clinton came achingly close to being the first woman to be the presidential nominee and retains a dedicated base of support and impressive appeal to blue collar voters.

Recall that she survived scandals — Filegate, Travelgate, her husband's sexual dalliances — that would have sunk a lesser mortal and then went on to win a Senate seat in a state, New York, notorious for its convoluted politics, where she had never lived and had no real connection.

Her effortless re-election was a sign that she can have the Senate job as long as she wants. If Sen. Obama wins and her hopes of another presidential run are perhaps eight years off, the question is: Will she want to?

If Sen. Clinton wants to stay in public life, there aren't many options. Her husband has pre-empted one field with his Clinton Foundation. No nonprofit post could match the power and high profile of her Senate seat.

Some have suggested that Sen. Obama, if elected, appoint her to the Supreme Court, a job for which she isn't really qualified and one that the Republicans would certainly block. Some have suggested that she might run for New York governor, but it's hard to imagine her trading Washington, her home for 16 years, for the administrative grind of Albany.

Or she could return to the Senate and take up the torch that Sen. Ted Kennedy is passing as that body's great liberal lion — in her case, lioness. She has said she looks forward to passing universal healthcare and having Sen. Obama sign it. And the fact is that Sen. Obama, who was less collegial with his fellow senators than she, will need her advocacy in Congress.

A chapter in a gripping American political biography closed in Denver this week but it is far from the final chapter.

I don't think the American public can stomach a leftist-liberal, Marxist, socialists, big government president like Obama. The electorate will soon find out just how big an empty suit he really is.

Learn about Black Liberation Theology, and about the corrupt Chicago political machine to learn what Obama has immersed himself in the past two decades.

WARNING: Obama has 1.3 trillions in spending on Marxist/socialism programs, all on the backs of the taxpayers. Check out his website if you don't believe me.

Fact: It is pretty obvious that with all the EVILS OF MARXISM garbage the republicans throw around, Democrats have proven that we know how to manage an economy and engage the world with real, productive foreign policy.
Republican administrations have proved that while their rhetoric may be disciplined, their thinking is not. And once again, the end of a republican administration leaves us with soaring debt, crushed middle class, disappearing wages and no advances in energy, education, new technologies.
And with Bush, we get the added bonus of two wars, diminished world standing, constitutional destruction, and the effects of cronyism reaching everything from FEMA to the DOJ to Iraq's rebuilding.
Amazing that this election is even close, really.

Greed and ignorance will destroy America. NowHearThis is an example of the latter.

Aw, Lauramc, you always make so much good sense. Thanks.

The redoubtable Mrs. Clinton has weathered a lot and maybe been eroded by the weather a bit too i.e. her vote for war.

Reading Bernstein's bio of her recently, I was struck by how many unjust allegations adhered to the couple from the beginning and the constant grind of groundless investigations dogged their efforts. Only B. Clinton's sexual picadillos turned out to have substance and they were frankly none of our business. Not that we weren't fascinated to read about them.

We could have done worse than Hillary. We did a shade better. Now having taken care of the lesser evil let's hope we don't end up with the greater, the mad bomber of the many houses.

Maybe she could stay at home and bake chocolate chip cookies? I don't know if socialists do that.

FACT: Socialism does not work. Never has, never will.
The FACTS of life are conservative.
FACT: The empty suit Obama will soon be revealed. A far left empty suit with an empty resume and a schooling in Chicago thug politics.

I should know better . . .I do know better than to tilt with the sillies, but my muse descended while I was jogging this a.m.and I can't help myself--

Don't think
Don't know
Paste on a label
And good to go

Socialist
Lefty
Liberal too
Repeat the mantra
But haven't a clue

A cup of hatred
A measure of fear
A lot of bullbleep
And a Rovian smear.

Hey hey,
Ho ho
Where does the taxpayer's money go?
Halliburton, Blackwater, big oil too
Praise the troops
But (bleep) them too.

Obama: "change", I am a "world citizen", "I bring change", the change we must change to the change we hold dear, "change".

I don't know about you, but it takes more than cheesy catch phrases for me to vote for someone.

Have you seen the Greek temple facade where Obama will give his acceptance speech. I know many think of him as the messiah, but is he know a god who will preach fluffy speeches of "change" from his temple to the masses of his followers. It is really creepy the way people believe him to be their "hope" and they way people are starry-eyed over him.

For certain, no man is my "hope". I find that pathetic. It just takes more to convince me than what I have seen from his shallow speeches of "change".

Cassie -- apparently you don't know better. You're still just a far left indoctrinee. It must be an unhappy life....

Mike -

You cannot get through to these people. Don't even try.

Their messiah will be preaching “change” to his masses of sheep under the facade of a Greek temple tonight. Obama is their “hope”. Have you seen all the bumper stickers that state “hope” and “change”? It is a cult following. I have never seen anything like it in this country.

Tonight, he will preach from an open air stadium, under his Greek temple, and possibly under his own seal or symbols, and he will state that we must “change” this country. The masses will wildly applaud. In a creepy way, it reminds me of old film footage of the Nuremberg speeches. It is really bizarre.

There is really no more free thought in the Democratic Party. One must buy into Obama’s “hope” or they are ostracized by their own.

The American people will start to notice this farce as time goes on and McCain will win. Clinton would have been a more successful adversary against McCain. The Dems will find this out too late. Harry Truman must be rolling in his grave due to the Obama spectacle.

I’m a lonely old broad
Nothin’ much going on
I love Obama
Don’t know quite why
Perhaps its words
That send me soaring
Change and hope
Are quite rewarding
For what I not quite sure
Perhaps I’ll find out some day
Change and hope are empty
Brays, spoken eloquently
By broken Pols
I want to be heard
Please hear me out
I’m a lonely old broad
Nothin’ much going on
I love Obama
Don’t know quite why….

Tsk, tsk, y'all, your knee jerks are showing.

It was a nice convention, everybody having fun, feeling warm and fuzzy. Even I got a happy moment with Dennis Kucinich's brief stirring speech, (which was not reported in the corporate media.)

However, there were some disturbing images outside, protesters being brutalized by cops, which was not reported in the corporate media either. I shall post the videos if I get to it.

You gotta break a lot of heads to keep it nice.

Protesters brutalized by cops --- works for me! The playground rules were laid out and naturally they couldn't follow the rules.

As stated in the article, 'If Obama loses — and the polls indicate that for all the Republicans' woes and the baggage of President Bush, he is not a sure thing come November'.
This country will survive should he be elected. Just as we survived 8 years of Clinton, and 8 years of Bush. We are stronger than most folks think we are.
Having said this, the site of his speech tonight smacks of to much hubris. It may well be his downfall.

I would also add that it doesn't really matter who you vote for. This state is blue. Obama will have the EC votes from it.

It is not up to the police to set the rules of the playground. It is up to the US Constitution, the First Amendment specifically. A long history of judicial findings regarding protest bought with blood and struggle figures as well.

But I'm not surprised at your response, Mike. Every utterance of yours indicates you are by basic instinct a fascist.

http://www.smirkingchimp.com/thread/1671

SS, we really don't know yet whether we've survived Bush. We are one step away from financial and economic ruin, stuck with a very expensive imperial war, and the full weight of peak oil has yet to hit us. Following Clinton, though, we were in pretty good shape.

Other nations have their relative homogeneity to fall back on, a sense of ethnic identity and cultural similarity but we are everybody--no single race, religion, ethnicity or culture not even one language in this area. We could fall into pieces under stress.

It was a warm fuzzy convention which will end tonight as Obama move up on his throne. He has spend over a year talking about Change, but What is he going to change, this is all soup with no meat. We had a bunch of people get up and give speachs, but if you guess not too many of those there really were listening. They had the place with security so tight that it took the governor of one state over a half hour to pass through it. What were they afraid of, we have become a nation of people being afraid and now we have a nominee for the President that demanded secret service protection long before any normal get it, he was not even assuse of winning at that time. What does that tell you what it will be like if he is in the Whitehouse. We though g Bush was over security minded but this fellow has gone over board.
Now tonight he will talk to a big bunch of people in that foot ball stadium, but he will not come over well on TV you can't from that place.
He is all show, and no go. I would have and did vote for Hillary, but will not vote for Obama,

Anyone who uses pre-teen texting like "ROTFLMAO" is pathetic (by the way, includes the word "a$s").

I find you vulgar, profane, full of knee jerk attacks toward other people.

How do you know if I watch Fox News? So what if I do. Does that piss you off? You can't handle someone elses opinion that is different than yours? You are a tiny, little man who just attacks. Who spends all day on this site, under multiple screen names just attacking others. Get a life you fool!

You are pathetic and I will not waste my time with types such as yourself.

The moderator just should ban all of your names: jw, jw1000, ken, ken10. It would improve the tone of this site from the negative, person attacks you carry out on a daily basis.

Cassandra,
True we don't yet know if we have survived. My guess is that yes, we have survived but we need to get our house into some sense of order.
What most folks on this board don't care to admit is that we need to get together on it. Not sit on our respective side of the isle and complain about those on the other side. I give you our state for an excellent example of dysfunction.
Outside of politics most folks I know are pretty nice. I suspect that we would find each other, well, tolerable company, should we ever meet.
The return on mean spirited behavior is such that, in public anyway, it is not advised.

For your information I can only spend one half hour a day to watch the news and I choose ABCNews with Charles Gibson. I find it informative. I like it. Does anyone have a problem with Charles Gibson’s reporting? Is it “too corporate” or "too mainstream"? Give me a break!

I sometimes read the stories in the Ventura Star too when I have time. Today I have some free time until 2 while I work at the computer. Is this paper too “right wing” or too “corporate” for you? If so, then why are you here! No one forces you to read the Ventura Star. I happen to like it too.

I don’t have countless hours were I can search websites to dig up political dirt to make points in the Ventura Star webpage or whatever political chat rooms you all frequent. My goodness, I have a life and politics should be only a small part of a normal person’s life. Life goes on regardless of whoever wins the election!

You can state - Citizen, I disagree with you on this point......but understand where you are coming from.

How about that? Can you show some respect? If so, then please respond. Since you have not shown respect I asked you to refrain from addressing me. I don't care if you thoughtfully rip up Obama or McCain since they are far from personal to me. But the one liners are childish.

Can you be respectful to me and others? Let me know, next time, and maybe we can have a respective set of points and counterpoint. Today, I don't think that is possible. See you next time.

Come on, Citizen, mike, ss, these leftists actually think that CNN is a centrist News Corporation, get upset when you post fact and basically spew their prefabricated propaganda pills every day in these posts. No one can possibly far enough to the left for them, ever.
These people would vote for their savior, Obama, if he mutilated children outside of his house on National T.V., they don't care what he represents, don't care that he's financed by a Nazi sympathizer, they don't care that Obama is every bit as much a National Socialist, as any Nazi who ever lived.
To call them "liberals" is absolutely wrong folks, Classic Jeffersonian Liberalism was based on self determination, much like today's Conservatism, in other words, we, genuine CONSERVATIVES are closer to what they purport themselves to be.
Have you EVER seen a leftist criticize a Democrat for ANYTHING or hold a Democrat's feet to the fire for ANYTHING? Have you, ever in your life, seen a group of people pray so hard to lose a war and for the economy to take a dive, as these people have, or hate and promote jealousy towards their own country?
Yet to get back to the crux of the article, you just have to laugh anytime a Clinton whines about unfair treatment by leftists. The Clintons have been receiving a dose of what they've been dishing out for years. They are out of power right now and are grasping for anything they can sink their grubby nails into, to keep some hold on the power they so desperately crave. We are seeing the Hildabeast pandering to Obama with one hand, and stabbing him in the back with the other, desperately hoping John McCain wins so she can say; "I told you so!" I can tell you from personal experience from growing up less than 20 miles from Arkansas, Hillary Clinton is eying the 2012 election with drool on her chin!
I just LOVE seeing leftists eat their own!

I'd like a Green Party, of which I belong at times. A party that gets it that we are all one people. like it or not, and that a planet at risk is a risk to everyone. I could do without the doctrinaire socialism, however. Capitalism/socialism is a fake dichotomy IMO.

Or failing that an old fashioned Progressive Party, of the Hiram Johnson variety--honest elections, honest government, honest information--League of Women Voters, reformers and fuss budget educators, swift boaters and Fox News stay after school and write 'I am a liar" 100 times on the blackboard. .

Yes, I could go for either.

RE: media--CNN is shallow, depending on artificial balance and with little depth. MSNBC is not an improvement that I can see but I don't watch TV much so it's solely impressionistic. Don't like ranters of any stripe. Obermann, for example, may be right on; but he's stylistically offensive.

I like Truthout on-line because it's a great digest of what gets underreported. Ditto Democracy Now! Like, did you know Hugo bailed on the FARC abut a week or two prior to Betancourt's release?. The BBC has tilted toward shallow since the purge following David Kelly's suicide but is interesting in reporting an outsider perspective. LA Times, NY Times and Washington Post are steps above most but corporate media are corporate media. PBS is solid mostly. Thom Hartmann is miles above most in providing a framework for interpretation. Al Jazeera has brilliant cartoons and a genuine democratic Middle Eastern perspective.

Sigh, so many views, so little time.

But the real stuff is not strictly speaking political at all but ecological: Heinberg, Kunstler, et al.

The Star does what it needs to to stay alive with some great reporters and editorial staff on occasion and some truly abysmal columnists from the Scripps Howard stable. They publish some really awful right wing think tankers too. It tilts right but has glimmerings of enlightenment.

There was a dust up over an interview with Stanley Kurtz, a conservative writer. He has researched the relationship between Barack Hussein Obama and William Ayers, former Weather Underground bomb thrower. It is worth listening to for it a gives a great insight into Obama and his closet associates. Also and most importantly it gives us a look into how Obama will approach school reform. It is also revealing how Obama supports react to valid criticism. These guys were GIVEN well over 100 million dollars to improve Chicago schools. After spending that sum of money what do they have to show for it? "Nothing"

Sharing a poem I wrote after Hillary's magnificent swan song last night...

UNITY
By Maya Teague

There she was, a vision of grace
It’s been a while, I have missed her face.
A tear, a smile, a lump in my throat
When to the stage she did softly float…

Her eyes agog with zeal and ardor,
I can’t imagine anything harder.
The words flowed fast, the emotions deep,
A healing of sorts, a promise to keep…

We must be united, she cautioned us all,
There’s no time to waste, we must heed the call.
Our wounds, our hurts, our pain must heal
The purpose is nobler, the crisis is real…

The nation is ailing, it’s no time to fight
Why don’t we join hands - in number there’s might!
The future at stake, please talk to your heart
To rise above bitterness that keeps us apart…

Divided we lose, united we win,
Let’s take care of us, enough of this din!
Let Clinton remain in your heart’s quiet place
But let’s give Barack all we’ve got in this race!!!
