Parade will honor workers in county

Community events mark Labor Day

From field workers to corporate executives, Santa Paula's annual Labor Day Parade on Monday will honor all working men and women, the event's organizers say.

The parade, which is in its fourth year, is the only Labor Day parade in Ventura County, though other events are scheduled throughout the region on the national holiday.

"It's a nice little parade that honors people who are working," said Al Guilin, chairman of the parade committee.

"We are aware that lots of different types of people work," Guilin added. "From farm- workers to municipal workers to office workers. We understand that all people do their best to earn a living, and we wanted to honor the date more than just by not going to work."

The parade will begin at 10 a.m. on Main Street and is expected to last an hour as it follows a route from Eighth Street to Mill Street.

"There's always a nice mix of people who show up. You can come, spend an hour, and then go home and barbecue," Guilin said.

This year's parade grand marshals are Ernie and Joyce Carlson, who have lived in the community for more than 50 years.

Among the Labor Day events throughout the county are the following:

Countywide

n Seven golf courses throughout Ventura County will participate in the second annual Patriot Golf Day, which raises money for the Folds of Honor Foundation, providing scholarships to families of those disabled or killed in the line of duty in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Patriot Golf Day, actually a four-day observance from Friday to Monday, collects one extra dollar in greens fees from thousands of golf courses over Labor Day weekend. The proceeds are used to help the families through the foundation established by PGA teaching pro and Air National Guard pilot Dan Rooney.

Participating courses include Elkins Ranch, Los Robles, Lost Canyons, North Ranch, River Ridge, Rustic Canyon and Simi Hills.

Have fun this Labor Day. Don't drink alcohol, then drive. Be safe.
