Camarillo to buy 12 acres, parcel could house ice rink

The Camarillo Community Development Commission, which is made up of all five members of the City Council, approved the purchase of 12 acres of land that could provide a new site for the Channel Islands Ice Center.

The vacant land is in the western part of the city near Home Depot and is expected to become accessible by road when Ventura Boulevard is extended.

The Ice Center is currently in the Wagon Wheel district of Oxnard, which is slated for redevelopment. The owners of the rink, the Channel Islands Figure Skating Club and the Channel Islands Riptide Hockey Club, are looking for a new location in western Ventura County.

Though the ice rink is a possibility for the site, City Manager Jerry Bankston said the property could have a variety of uses, including the relocation of businesses now in the area that will be redeveloped into Camarillo Commons. No formal plans have been made for the ice rink.

The Commission voted 5-0 to purchase the property for up to $3.5 million.

In view of the major growth of commercial properties in the last several years on the north side of the Camarillo Airport, perhaps now would be a real good time for the County of Ventura (operators of the airport) and the City of Camarillo to sit down together and hammer out an agreement for the long-term use of properties to the east and west of the flightline/runway. I would suggest something along the lines of a fifty-year zoning restrictions that would dis-allow anything other than agriculture, or perhaps storage. (How about low-cost open RV or boat storage for all those Camarillo residents that are not allowed to park near their homes.)
My point is that it would be infinitely stupid to allow commercial use, usually followed by residential development, under the landing patterns of an active airport. Be careful, Camarillo, what you put out there; and refrain from the typical idiocy of "I'm building at the end of a runway, so you better close the runway!"
On the other hand, maybe this has already been done; if so, kudos to everyone for taking the smart road!

Two words; developer subsidy. This is so wrong on so many levels it is difficult to know where to begin. The land in question is part of an area to be assessed for the Springville interchange. The city would be on the hook for part of the costs with this scheme. And then there is the whole "Camarillo Commons" fiasco which this land grab is intended to mitigate. High intensity hyper-urbanism with mixed use, congestion and massive financial costs to the rest of the city. The planning staff and council won't stop until Camarillo resembles Oxnard.

Throw the Bumble "B's" out...Bankston and Burrows just make me sick...Ditto Rob Dawg...These couple of know nothings leading this Council around like pigs with nose rings at the county fair. When will they be happy? When the proposed mixed use areas of Camarillo look like the Ventura Avenue? Complete with gangs, drugs and third world anarchy? When the 101 corridor looks like Oxnard, so built up you can't even (literally) see the Topa Topa Mountains anymore. Bankston is due to be out in a couple of years (that stroke didn't get rid of him, but it did leave his mental capacity severely lacking) and hopefully the new manager will bring in a SLOW TO NO GROWTH PLANNER who knows a little about what Camarillo means to Ventura County! The last bastion of hope, decency and quality of life in the Oxnard Plain.

Rob_Dawg-
Oxnard still has some charm (between shootings). Camarillo is Orange County North. I will take a Barry Street bungalow or a Cam Hieghts hippy house before I move to teh proposed Commons. Land grab is an understatement!

I'll tell you what... how about I trade you a WALMART for your Ice Rink. Could be a lot worse!

Cucina Isabella is pretty good for Italian food. And there is a 99 cent on Arneill. You can google it and they'll tell you how to get there.
