@TO-Cal Stand Out hed:Mic wave karaoke contests in Ventura They're emerging from the shadows, song by prerecorded song: vocalists with the pipes to carry a karaoke cover tune. Two venues in Ventura are holding contests to crown local karaoke champs. n At Billy O's, the annual Ventura Idol karaoke competition gets under way this week with auditions from 8 to 10 p.m. today and Friday, then continues through the end of September: first round, 8 to 10 p.m. Sept. 4-5; Karaoke Wheel of Death round, in which songs are selected based on a random spin of a wheel, 8 to 10 p.m. Sept. 11-12; semifinals, 8 to 10 p.m. Sept. 19; and finals, 7 p.m. to midnight Sept. 26. Prizes are $500 for first place, $200 for second and $100 for third. Audience members vote for their favorite singers. The entry fee is $5. Billy O's is at 2819 E.
