Seven golf courses throughout Ventura County will take part in the second annual Patriot Golf Day.

The event raises money for the Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides educational scholarships to families of those who have become disabled or lost their lives in the line of duty in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Last year, more than 3,200 golf courses participated and helped raise more than $1.1 million by donating one dollar for every player who played that day. This year, Patriot Golf Day will span all four days of this Labor Day weekend.

Local courses taking part are Rivier Ridge, Rustic Canyon, Los Robles, Simi Hills, Lost Canyons, Elkins Ranch and North Ranch Country Club.

Patriot Golf Day is the vision of Capt. Dan Rooney, who is a PGA teaching professional and F-16 fighter pilot in the 125th Fighter Squadron of the Oklahoma Air National Guard.

TaylorMade-adidas Golf has vowed to help the foundation double the first year's fundraising efforts by creating specially designed, limited edition drivers inspired by the F-16 "Viper" fighter jet Rooney piloted during two tours in Iraq. The driver features the Patriot Golf Day logo on the toe, a laser-etched F-16 jet on the sole, a deep "intimidation" black crown and a specially designed Patriot Golf Day head cover in red, white and blue.

Participating golf facilities have received a single driver in a commemorative box to put on display for silent auction prior to Patriot Golf Day. Net proceeds from the silent auction will go to the charity.

Brian Marshall event: The second annual Brian Marshall Golf Tournament, honoring the memory of former Ventura College men's golf coach Brian Marshall, will take place Oct. 27 at Saticoy Country Club. Like last year, proceeds from the event will go toward supporting the Ventura College golf program.

Last year's tournament raised nearly $20,000.

Hole-in-one report: Brian Cook aced the 119-yard eighth hole at Los Robles Golf Course. Cook used a wedge to score his perfect shot. It was witnessed by Connie Cook and David Sobul.

Local seniors qualify: Five Ventura County golfers have qualified for the 17th annual California Senior Amateur Championship, Sept. 15-17 at Poppy Hills Golf Course.

Jack Rector of Thousand Oaks won the qualfying event at Moorpark Country Club with a score of 3-under 69. John McCarthy of Ventura was second at 2 under. George Hunter of Agoura Hills (1 under), Patrick Barrett of Newbury Park (3 over) and Jim Fulgentis of Westlake Village (3 over) also advanced.
