Divers still searching for man's body in Lake Piru

Divers continued their search Tuesday for the body of a Los Angeles man presumed drowned after he fell into Lake Piru the previous evening, authorities said.

Anatoly Smolyansky, 39, was in a boat on the lake with his 9-year-old son and his two daughters, ages 5 and 7, about 6 p.m. Monday when his youngest daughter fell overboard and he jumped in to save her, said Capt. Ross Bonfiglio of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department.

Smolyansky pushed his daughter back toward the boat, and she made it back safely, but he went under and did not resurface, Bonfiglio said.

The children were wearing life vests.

Rescue divers searched for more than 40 minutes in water that had only six inches of visibility, authorities said.

Recovery teams worked until 2 a.m. Tuesday and resumed about 7 a.m., but had not yet found Smolyansky on Tuesday evening, Bonfiglio said.

The search is being concentrated in an area at least 500 yards by 500 yards with water depths ranging from 30 to 100 feet, authorities said.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has offered additional recovery resources, which are expected to include a remote-controlled mini submarine.
