A man suspected of killing a local businessman outside an Oxnard bank 10 days ago and then shooting at police Saturday was arrested Monday in Carpinteria, authorities said.

Jeffrey Aguilar, 22, of Oxnard was arrested about 8 a.m. at the Holiday Inn Express in the 5600 block of Carpinteria Avenue, police said.

Oxnard police recently identified Aguilar as a suspect in the killing of Gurmohinder Singh, 55, of Oxnard. Singh was shot dead outside the US Bank at 2385 N. Oxnard Blvd. on Aug. 16.

Oxnard detectives developed leads indicating Aguilar was staying at the Holiday Inn, Assistant Police Chief Jason Benites said Monday. A SWAT team from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department made the arrest, Benites said, with federal marshals assisting.

Aguilar surrendered without incident, Benites said. No shots were fired, and no one was injured Monday, he said.

"We were anticipating that he would resist arrest. Fortunately for us and for him, that wasn't the case," Benites said. "It was the best-case scenario."

Singh had just left the bank on Aug. 16 after making a withdrawal when a man shot him multiple times in the chest and took cash from his hands. Singh died at the scene.

Family members said he probably had withdrawn a significant amount of cash. Singh owned several local convenience stores along with his cousins.

A security camera captured an image of a man at the scene.

On Saturday evening, police spotted Aguilar driving in Oxnard and they tried to stop him, authorities said. Aguilar and the officers fired gunshots that hit each other's vehicles, but nobody was injured, Benites said. Meanwhile, Aguilar escaped, police said.

Citing an ongoing investigation, Benites declined to discuss many specifics of the case, including whether Singh knew Aguilar, whether a weapon or money was recovered during Aguilar's arrest, and who or what led authorities to Aguilar.

"There's still a lot more work to do on this case," Benites said. "Our detectives have literally been at battle stations for the past week.

"I cannot speak highly enough of the effort that our investigators have put forth on this. They've literally been working around the clock since the morning of the 16th," he said.

Aguilar was booked Monday into Ventura County Jail on suspicion of murder and robbery. He is not eligible for bail, according to the Ventura County Sheriff's Department. He is scheduled to appear this afternoon in Superior Court.

Oxnard police allege Aguilar is a gang member. He was served with the gang injunction against the Colonia Chiques in April 2007, according to Ventura County Superior Court records.

He also was convicted in 2007 of misdemeanor possession of false identification and has several traffic violations on his record, court records show.

One of Singh's cousins, Nirmal Singh, said he and his family are thankful that police have caught a suspect, but the arrest cannot assuage their grief.

"We have a little, little relief," he said. "Our cousin — he is gone and he will never come back."

Relatives said they still did not understand why Singh was apparently shot without warning. "We still don't know why he killed him," Nirmal said of the killer. "We are just heartbroken."

Nice work, glad he's been caught!

Jeffrey Aguilar - hell awaits you here on earth. Enjoy prison.

With the OPD getting razed about shoddy work all the time , it's nice to be able to say, "Job well done" for a change. This was an important win for them and they came through looking like the professionals that we pay them to be. Again, good job OPD!

Posted by MontanaMoon on August 26, 2008 at 4:58 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Well he probably will enjoy Prison. He'll have 3 hots and a cot, no bills, free medical, no rent to pay. He'll be doing better than most of us. I just hope that some day which is unprobable, he'll realize that all of that has been paid for by the man's blood that he killed. His Soul is damned but he doesn't care. It was worth it for the money wasn't it Mr. Aguilar??. Oh and let's not forget that everyday we go to work, the taxes we pay are paying those bills and his medical expenses and his rent. Just what I need, is some low life to support.

Thank God we do have tax's to pay for prisons to keep scum like this off the streets....
Glad they caught him.

I heard Aguilar never got away with the money. I heard he dropped it jumping the fence right after he took Singh's life! So, the killing was for absolutely NOTHING. You are correct MontanaMoon, he'll live scott free, on our tax dollars, for the rest of his life. God bless the Singh family. I can appreciate what they are going through. I lost my father when I was only 16, but I lost my dad to another kind of killer; a drunk driver!

Posted by ecarson1958 on August 26, 2008 at 6:46 a.m. (Suggest removal)

MontanaMoon; You obviously don't watch any of the locked up prison shows on t.v. Prison doesn't look like a place of enjoyment. It is a boring, slow life filled with uncertainty of any day with regards to physical abuse. It is a place where he will know for the rest of his life that he cannot "work, enjoy the nature of the beaches, mountains, deserts. Friends, family." He will regret everyday of his life the stupid choice he made. It is a privilege to be able to drive a car and work, and play and enjoy life. I gladly pay to support his life in prison, a place he deserves while the rest of us law abiding citizens can be safe.

If it had just been a robbery and not a murder, then this would have such a different ending. As it is, the money is apparently recovered and the scumbag perp. is is prison. Now if the scumbag had just not killed Mr. Singh. What a senseless crime!

Posted by ironwoman on August 26, 2008 at 6:52 a.m. (Suggest removal)

ecarson- I think Montana was simply stating that he will still be able to get his meals, free medical and have no worries like the rest of us.

I am so happy they caught this guy.

Posted by BigJake on August 26, 2008 at 6:59 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Generally, I oppose the death penalty. I prefer a life time incarceration, no parole. But in this case this guy should get it. If ever a case cried out for the death penalty, this is one of them. I can only surmise that he took Mr. Singh's life for the pure thrill of it. Some thrill, now let the state give him a thrill . . . .

My god, I just may becoming a death penalty advocate.

OxnardNative,
Where did you hear he dropped the money while getting away? I thought I was keeping up with everything and haven't read that.

Good job everyone who worked so hard bringing this dirtbag down.

Posted by handyhood on August 26, 2008 at 7:09 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I just had the oppotunity to shake an OPD officers hand and to expess my fond job well done to him and his fellow officers. They don't hear about the good job they do often, only about the few bad officers who make the whole look bad. If you have an opportunity to do the same, I suggest now is the time to do so. I'm sure they will appreciate it! Prison is not the easy life, but it needs to be harder. So many of the lowlife scum who end up there don't mind going because it isn't a big enough deterent. Prison reform needs a second look. But, rehabilatation is possible with some. Time to do some weeding folks!

Posted by ecarson1958 on August 26, 2008 at 7:20 a.m. (Suggest removal)

ironwoman: I understand what Montanamoon is attempting to allude to. But to think even 3 hots and a cot is a consolation over our choice and opportunity to work, pay bills and the worries that come with freedom, I like most people will gladly choose the latter. I doubt the food he "enjoys" is even something worth looking forward to eating. His cot is a slab of concrete with a slim piece of foam. I doubt that this person and all of the other people in prison gave any of that much of a thought of the consequences to their behavior. Prison is meant to be an unpleasant place. I doubt his medical is really all that great also. But that is the reason these people go to prison. To suffer and be punished for their crime. His life in prison is a far better choice for us than the prisoner versus the death penalty. Of course it doesn't count in California. But, he has to live his whole life in a despicable and unpleasant place rather than be executed and not have to suffer. We can enjoy our freedom with all of our choices. I can go fly an airplane. Fly a kite. Take my kids to the movies. Imagine not ever doing these things again and then we can enjoy his incarceration even more.

OPD does a great job considering all the dirt bags they have to deal with. Was it actually OPD that brought this dirtbag down or Sheriffs? Seems to me that Carpenteria is out of OPD juristriction. Mr Kieth what is the answer?

Posted by cslaurie on August 26, 2008 at 7:36 a.m. (Suggest removal)

This is a poster boy for the death penalty. Now if we could only be like Texas and get the backlog moving.

Posted by keepin_it_real on August 26, 2008 at 7:46 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I understand that prison is not to be a place that is enjoyable, and some are not. I did, however see some photos of a new one in some other state, that looks like a state of the art business building. It has rec rooms, tv's, excersise equipment and all the comforts of home and then some. Now that pisses me off. I will have to look at them again. They are in my computer somewhere.

Then we have the Camarillo Prison Hospital issue going. Like prisoners have a right to have better healthcare than we do. When we have elderly and the disabled who can't make ends meet anyway.

Something wrong with all of this. I am so sick of all these doo gooders fighting for prisoners rights. They should have NONE!!!

If this guy gets out for jail for even 1 minute, I am moving out of Oxnard!!!!!

Posted by IslandHopper on August 26, 2008 at 8:23 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Sounds like one or more of his homies dimed him out for the reward. How ironic that some gang bangers are enjoying that reward now.

I'm glad this guy got caught. Only 22? Damn, now life in prison or possibly death. And - from a previous posters comment, didnt even get any money? Now, was that worth it Mr. Aguilar ?

Dumb A$$.

Send him to Texas. I understand that the prison's in Texas are no vacation. If our prison system was as harsh as Texas, maybe these criminals would think twice before committing a crime.

It's a good thing they caught Aguilar. By the choice he made it tells us what values he has. I say give him the needle.

If he is going to get prison, let him go to Arizona, to Joe Arpaio's country club. 60 years there will help Jeffery understand the evil in his actions.

Keepin_it_real - My husband told me the same thing, apperantly one of his employees witnessed Jeffrey running and he dropped money while escaping. I didn't really believe my husband or actually his employee (you know how someone always wants to claim they witnessed or they were their) I guess he was right. My husband said his employee spent his day at the police station being questioned.
I guess there is a lot more that happened that wasn't said.
What erks me is that if this guy did jump the fence towards those appts. why didn't they do the reverse 911, I heard OPD's reason behind it, but hell if I lived there I would have wanted to know this way I could have locked my doors and kept my kids inside. He obviously was still gun happy, he was exchanging gun shots with the cops Saturday before he got caught!

OPD's detectives located Aguilar. They deserve public recognition and thanks for their outstanding contribution to public safety. SBSD SWAT arrested him. It is a good example of inter-agency cooperation, all accomplished in a timely manner.

Law enforcement does their job and they do it well. The weakness is in the courts. If not for political correctness, we might be able to have a county-wide gang injunction and might even be able to keep the baggy pants creeps out of our malls and off the streets.

ecarson1958, obviously....oh so obviously you are in denial...FYI without too much info I have a Son in Prison for his OWN Stupidity and crimes, and I do have a real big problem with supporting someone in Prison for the rest of his life. Anyone who takes another persons life, NO matter if he got away with the money or not it was a SENSLESS ACT OF VIOLENCE!!!!! And I for one say, An Eye for and Eye and Do unto others as they would do unto you. The Prison system has NO room for these gangbangers who do their time and get out and a year or 2 or even a few months repeat their crimes because their rehabilitation services include cutting them loose once their time is up, and allowing them to do this again. My God, Criminals have better benefits than good citizens......Now you tell me how the family of the Victim is going to survive because of this cold and callus act against someone who was trying to life life the best way he knew how??? The guy that killed him is a menace to society.......Do not sit there and defend what this monster did! I say DO UNTO HIM THAT HE DID TO HIS VICTIM!

How sad he had to kill this man, he ruined his own life forever now! Yah ill agree he does look alil heavy on this pic but im sure in person full body he may look alil differnt. Im sure this is the suspect. Okayy so I was wrong he was not a Paisa...lol he did dress up like that on purpose..that's crazy...!!! I know that's why people [[like me]] should not assume...but hey it was just my opinon. But very glad they caught this guy before he escaped. GOOD JOB...!!!

Too bad this creep didn't shoot at police when they found him in Carp. Not that I'd ever want a police officer to be in danger, but a part of me just wants this scum to be on his journey to hell.

I just don't get why he had to kill Mr. Singh. I'm sure he would have handed over the money just by seeing a gun. To murder him, for ultimately NOTHING, is cowardly.

Now this jerk has the street cred of killing someone.

"How he got away from OPD, after shooting at them"?
I heard the radio traffic, and the reporting officer sounded out of breath, as if he just had bullets whiz past his ears. He also reported heavy damage to the police car, maybe the windshield peppered or blown out? Perhaps police will release a photo of the car, to show how close the officers came to being shot. I'm not going to second-guess them - they knew who they were dealing with, and I bet they were very eager to put a collar on this cold-blooded murderer.
Great work, OPD, and all others involved in this case. Condolences, too, to the family of the victim, from all accounts a hard-working, pleasant and good family man and whose earthly life was ended by someone who probably possessed none of those qualities.

The shooting occured on G and Guava, there was many cops on C as well. I live on Guava, so I was right in the middle of it all.

The exploer which I believed Jeffrey was in was shot up pretty bad, the front windshield was so shot up about 7 gunshots and the driver side as well. That car was in the middle of the street until about noon sunday when they towed it away.

I believe I went to Haydock Junior High with him, does anyone know if thats him?

Anyway I am very glad they caught him!!
He deserves everything they give him.

I sure wouldnt have a different opinion - none of my family members would be STUPID enough to shoot someone in cold blood outside of a bank for few bucks. Sorry dude, you're not gonna get any sympathy for your "family" member (gang family I'd assume) from these posters...........

What happened was both sad and tragic and I'm glad they caught the suspect because he could possibly continue committing his murderous crimes. People like this guy should never be allowed out in society. And as for the family of the victim, my heart goes out to them. I'm aware that this isn't going to bring back their family member, but at least, they got this guy off the streets and hopefully won't be getting out at anytime soon.

As far as the pics, the pictures taken at the bank were full body and were more recent. Also the picture was taken from a distance . The mugshot I also believe was taken in 2007. He could have lost a few pounds. The hat makes him look different too. And, of course, he was stupid enough to think he could throw everyone off by wearing the jersey.

I too first thought it looked like 2 different people, after looking again, I believe it is the same person.

Glad they got him and no one got hurt. I can't wait to hear more details. Congrads to everyone who worked so hard to bring him in. Including whoever ratted on him. lol

Posted by arbormarcos on August 26, 2008 at 7:56 p.m. (Suggest removal)

So here is a question that none of you have addressed. Did the victim and his family own convenience stores in Colonia? Maybe Aquilar had been sent away when he was a youngster trying to buy booze. Could he perhaps have been harboring resentment that Indians enter his neighborhood, and are successful at business? Was this man intentionally targeted? Was this a "hate crime"? Racism don't come only from whities. Think about it.
There is a kid in Oxnard about to be tried as an adult because he killed a openly gay kid. Hate crime? Did Aquilar have knowledge of the unfortunate victim? Was he singled out, how many other bank customers were leaving with cash that day?

Posted by 805girl on August 26, 2008 at 8:47 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I wouldn't be so sure he dropped the money anywhere specially since he got away for a week or so. And to all the ppl saying he should be hanged or whatever, that makes no sense you are just as cold as any criminal. What gives anyone the right to choose who should live or die, jeffrey will have his day with god one day and that's who will decide what his punishment will be.

stupid ppl. dont you think his family, who are probably just as heartbroken about the circumstances, are reading your comments. you wouldn't be saying this if it was someone in your family or friend.

arbormarcos,
Those are some very good questions. I know he had several stores in the area. Accourding, to the previous reports said one store was on Channel Isl Blvd.

As for the rest, who knows. It doesn't take much for these idiots to do these kind of crimes anymore. It is very sad. I suppose these questions will be answered in time.

805girl....get real....what about Mr Singh's family?? Why is it that everyone feels sorry for Aguilar's family? Yet Mr Sing'hs family is suffering much more. Aguilar has been to prison before so this is nothing new to his family. This will be just another trip to prison to visit Jeffrey on Sunday. Trust me they knew what a piece of crap he was. You are not going to tell me that no one in his family knew that he was a gangbanger or was out committing crimes.....that is pure bull crap.....they knew and they chose to ignore it, well they can't ignore it now.

To all you people criticizing OPD....first of all they pulled him over because they knew he was the killer. They had some pretty good evidence against him that is why they were out looking for him. Do you people think they it was just pure luck that they pulled over this particular gangbanger with a gun. I know in Oxnard every other car is a shaved head moron with a gun but think about it. Also to those who say that OPD screwed up by letting him get away.....it is safe to say that 99.99% of you have never been shot at. If you have I am 100% sure that you turned and ran the other way. Because you wouldn't have the courage to put your life on the line and chase someone who just shot at you. After being shot at, the officers went towards the gun fire after this loser but unfortunately he got away. You people sit behind your desk and criticize police officers without never ever having walked in their shoes. So until that day comes dont criticize how someone acted in a life or death situation when the fact is that you would have been curled up in a fetal position crying like a baby.......

axel718-I am being real! Of course I feel for the victims family. God forbid I loose a love one to something like this. But there is always two sides - and unfortunatly their is a lot of ppl. hurting in both families. It's besides the point if his family knew that he was a gangmember. That doesn't mean they love him less and it doesn't make it easier for them to see him in this situation, no parent wants to see their child do something so senseless and no children are at fault for what the mistakes their parents make. So, what I am saying is dont be so quick to judge. It is NOT jeffrey's family fault by any means, so dont treat them like they are responsible.

"thats what im saing jr mafia this kid shot at the cops and automaticly connected him to something alse it make their job so much easyer"

Believe it or not, detectives do not arrest someone just because they look like the suspect of a crime (especially a murder). They arrest them because they have enough evidence on that person. Do you think they want to get sued??? That's why they call them a suspect, which means innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. I have the utmost respect for the OXPD officers, not only because I work there and know them, but because on a daily basis I see how hard they work. They worked around the clock almost to gather all the evidence for this subject. All that work will pay off when he's convicted.

I'm not directing this to a specific person. Im just expressing my opinions and thought on the matter so i hope no one takes it personal.....

I've known jeffrey since the 4th grade (he is a yr older than me). My cousin has two lil ones by him and they are the most precious kids. I can't help but think about how they are being affected by this. I know jeffrey has always been a trouble maker but i never thought he was capable of killing someone. He hasnt been apart of a gang for years and last i talked to him and my cousin, they were doin fine. Then again that was awhile ago. I feel so bad for the victims family. I feel their pain... I know what its like to have a family member murdered. I highly doubt that they feel MUCH better now that jeffrey is caught. Nothing will bring back what they lost. Believe it or not I am very glad that they caught Jeffrey. If he is capable of doing what he did then of course i wouldnt want him on the streets. As far as the death penalty goes.... I dont agree with that at all. I know some of u do so lets just agree to disagree. I just feel that it's hypocritical to punish someone for murdering another person and then do the same to them. Because really, thats what the death penalty is... MURDER! But realisticly if Jeffrey did know the victim and he waited for him then it is a premeditated murder and chances are, that they are going for the death penalty for him. Watever happens though, he got himself in the situation so he'll have to deal with the consequences. I wont say what he deserves because no one has the right to say who deserves what.

My prayers go out to Jeffreys family and the Singh family. None asked for this and its ashame that they all have to go through this because of one person's actions.

Hello Bud Bundy- say Hi- to your father Al Bundy and your mother Peggy Bundy for me.

FYI- Mr. Medina was in support of the 1st and the 2nd gang injunctions. He stood in the same room with Oxnard Police Chief Art Lopez on the 1st gang injunction- where were you at? He graduated in 2003 from the Oxnard Police Department Citizen Academy. He has been on ride along with Oxnard Police Department. He has participated in awarding Kiwanis Officer of the Year for the past 5 years.

Mr. Medina turns his back on Police- please it's more like he will give the shirt off my back for brave men and women of OPD.

What have you done BUD to increase community policing in Oxnard????
