A man suspected of killing a local businessman outside an Oxnard bank nine days ago and then shooting at police Saturday was arrested today in Carpinteria, authorities said.
Jeffrey Aguilar, 22, of Oxnard was arrested about 8 a.m. at the Holiday Inn Express in the 5600 block of Carpinteria Avenue, police said.
Oxnard police recently identified Aguilar as a suspect in the killing of Gurmohinder Singh, 55, of Oxnard. Singh was shot dead outside the US Bank at 2385 N. Oxnard Blvd. on Aug. 16.
Oxnard detectives developed leads indicating Aguilar was staying at the Holiday Inn, Assistant Police Chief Jason Benites said today. A SWAT team from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department made the arrest, Benites said, with federal marshals assisting.
Aguilar surrendered without incident, Benites said. No shots were fired, and no one was injured today, he said.
“We were anticipating that he would resist arrest. Fortunately for us and for him, that wasn’t the case,” Benites said. “It was the best-case scenario.”
Singh had just left the bank on Aug. 16 after making a withdrawal when a man shot him multiple times in the chest and took cash from his hands. He died at the scene.
Family members said he probably had withdrawn a significant amount of cash. Singh owned several local convenience stores along with his cousins.
A security camera captured an image of the shooter. On Saturday morning, police spotted Aguilar driving in Oxnard and they tried to stop him, authorities said. Aguilar and the officers fired gunshots that hit each other’s vehicle, but nobody was injured, Benites said. Meanwhile, Aguilar escaped, police said.
Citing an ongoing investigation, Benites declined to discuss many specifics of the case, including whether Singh knew Aguilar, whether a weapon or money were recovered during Aguilar’s arrest, and whether anyone will receive a $21,000 award offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Singh’s killer.
“There’s still a lot more work to do on this case,” Benites said. “Our detectives have literally been at battle stations for the past week.
“I cannot speak highly enough of the effort that our investigators have put forth on this. They’ve literally been working around the clock since the morning of the 16th,” he said.
Aguilar was booked today into Ventura County Jail on suspicion of murder and robbery. He is not eligible for bail, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department. He is scheduled to appear Tuesday morning in Superior Court.
Oxnard police alleged that Aguilar is a gang member. He was served with the gang injunction against the Colonia Chiques in April 2007, according to Ventura County Superior Court records. He also was convicted in 2007 of misdemeanor possession of false identification and has several traffic violations on his record, court records show.
One of Singh’s cousins, Nirmal Singh, said he and his family are thankful that police have caught a suspect, but the arrest cannot assuage their grief.
“We have a little, little relief,” he said. “Our cousin — he is gone and he will never come back.”
Relatives said they still did not understand why Singh was apparently shot without warning.
“We still don’t know why he killed him,” Nirmal said of the killer. “We are just heartbroken.”

Obviously this dude is brain dead - otherwise he wouldn't have committed such a heinous crime - in broad daylight - with many cameras taking his photo. Killing a human being for a few bucks. What was he thinking? Now, he'll have 60 yrs of sitting behind bars like an animal to think about what he did. Unless - another animal in jail will put him out of his suffering. Lock him up & leave a loaded gun next to him --- maybe he'll finish the job.

opns...I was referring to the early story that showed his picture and talked about him shooting at police.
The sad thing about gangs to me is that these guys feel this is the best option. That lying, stealing, killing, injuring, doing drugs, selling drugs, etc. is their best option in life.
It's pathetic. And even more sad...they have kids and bring them up in the gang lifestyle. Breeding future generations of bad guys. Nice, real nice.

Too all you people who do not understand, all i meant to say is, he has just wasted his life for nothing. I am very glad they caught him, and he DESERVES to be put away.
I feel sorry that he did not treasure his life enough not to go down the path he did and now left his kid to deal with a deadbeat father!!

I'm sure we'll see a posting that says Aguilar is a wonderful father who loves his child(ren). I say this because perpetuation of the banger species through breeders is a real problem. I have seldom, if ever, seen one of these bangers who had not yet fathered an out-of-wedlock child.

Great job OPD. Thank you.
And to those wondering when the defenders will start with "he's a good boy" crap, don't forget the car washes too. Or is that just for burial cost?
I am glad he wasn't shot because of what it does to the police officers that have to shoot these jerks. Taking a life isn't easy to live with under any circumstance. Plus the wonderful family of his would then turn around and sue the city and the police department. Not to mention all the people that would then say "why didn't OPD just shoot him in the foot? They didn't have to kill him."
Good to see all the positive comments about the police department and people wanting to do something to help.

Guess who rode on bike past the Holiday Inn Express in Carpenteria this morning about 7:45 on my way to work? Cops were everywhere, guns drawn, SWAT trucks and cop cars blocking the HIE driveway. BUT the police didn't bother to stop traffic (or me) OR the children walking to school right in front of the HIE! This suspect has already murdered someone and shot at cops in escaping and as they close in to arrest him the police don't bother to stop traffic or kids walking to school?! Outrageous!

When you read stories like this, just think where we would be without the Gang Injunction or the stepped up enforcement of the gang probelm byt teh OPD.
When you vote for City Council in November, note there are at least candidates who have turned there backs on the Police Department personel, and have been vocal in the Gang Injunction. They would rather support criminals, than the Poice and law abiding citizens.
Do NOT vote for Carmen Ramirez or Saul Medina, unless you want to see crime activity rise and our city to go even farther down the toilet.
Ms. Ramirez has been very vocal in her opposition ofthe police and gang crackdowns.
Mr. Medina stood by last Thursday at the Planning Commission and allowed an applicant who has a history of criminal behavior and is under an ongoing criminal investigation to call the Oxnard Police, specifically Officer Cliff Waer a liar, and backed this shady character is his bid for an ABC permit. This is the same guy who is holding campaign events for Mr. Medina at no or reduced charge. Does this smell as bad to you as it does to me?
Good job to the Police for catching this murderer, I'll keep on supporting you even if these two people who want to lead our city won't.

This "tough guy", Jeffrey Aguilar, shoots an unarmed, family man, point blank and for what? Just some cash? Maybe also to proove to his little gang banger buddies just how "bad a$s" he is as a 22 year old gangster. Jeffrey Aguilar is nothing but a coward, a miserable, little coward...
Burn him at the stake, make it a slow roast so he feels lots of pain for a few hours. Roast him like the pig he is.

BabyzDaddy_01 - My guess is that the piece of nine-day-old canine fecal matter that killed the poor man knew did not pick him randomly. mr Singh regularly made cash dropoffs at the bank in Oxnard. His family was always worried something like this might happen. Mr. Aguilar, probably a product of Oxnard's school system and parents who always thought their son was an angel, most likely knew of Mr. Signh's routine. Of course, I'm speculating, but it'll all come out eventually.

You are way to funny !!! "Maybe some one else paid for the room and then turned him in." That is too much. I had to laugh out loud !!!! Good one. Made my day.
Good to see to, we are all on the same page here with the comments. I wish I could have seen the comments that were removed that some were laughing about. Oh well, I missed it.

The Brazen bull should be used for this outstanding person. Better yet, the mare of steel from the 1964 movie, The Vikings.
That is if the good Judge is not presiding.

Congrats to all law agencies involved in the capture of this poor excuse of a human being. His accomplices same deal.

opns,
Wouldn't that be a hoot if that is what happened. Like a sting.
Just looked at that video at oxnardpd.org, very interesting. Thanks for the info who ever posted it. Everyone should check it out. You get to see the dirtbag get arrested.

I spent a good part of the early morning hours on Sunday at OPD following the gunfire between Aguilar and the officers. Watching the ongoing investigation unfold was one of the most remarkable things I have seen in nearly 30 years of involvement in law enforcement. Major crimes detectives working feverishly with little or no sleep; the entire command staff present and offering all they could muster. An absolute frenzy of activity with the sole objective to capture this monster. They all did the job they were hired to do: protect and serve the citizens of Oxnard. And they did it superbly.
So, the next time you hear (or read) about a problem with this department, try to remember the good that comes from the vast majority of these fine police officers.

Yeah keepin_it_real - OPD has a real nice website.

a.wisotsky - without a doubt i'm sure.
Thank you for that.

A public stoning is in order.

To the official who called his capture a 'best case scenario,' I disagree. The best case scenario would be that he was blown to bits by 300 police bullets.
To the officers who hunted this dog down, may God bless and comfort you. You are my heroes. Thank you.

Since he shot at police, I hope they add attempted murder of a peace officer to the charges. The more things he can be convicted of to get the maximum possible sentence, the better.

Good Job, OPD!

Congratulations to all men and women who worked on this case. Congratulations to the entire organization. Congratulations to the Chief and Asst. Chiefs. Congratulations to the members of SWAT in Santa Barbara.
Thoughts and prayers to the Singh Family. Though he will not come back, at least some peace can settle in.
Please local elected officials; STAY OUT OF THIS ISSUE. I didn't hear from you when the department was in troubled waters in recent months. Did not hear any of you supporting the men and women of uniform during those months. No support for the OPD whatsoever....except when looking for endorsements and money.

Great job OPD, but I stick to what I said last night. We need to declare these street gangs as domestic terrorist, we need federal troops on our streets assisting local police, local law enforcement is not cutting it. I am will to bet that more Americans have been killed by street gangs since 9/11/01 than were killed by Al Queda on that day and our goverment does what. Lets hope he does not get a lawyer like Pell or Quinn then we will hear how his brain was not developed due to a seagull taking a dump on his head when was 2 years old. Have fun in prison don't drop the soap unless you like that.

Hmmm, maybe we should all grab pitchforks and torches and head to VC Main Jail around midnight? Imagine the scumbag looking out what few windows there are at a scene from Young Frankenstein.
Hope the OPD detectives slept good last night, heck should do a BBQ for em.

good jov opd. and thanks for the video info WHATUP,,,,As for HIGH_SOCIETY, in case you havent noticed the gang injunction isnt very successful, what a waste of taxpayers money, now this guy will go to jail for the next 20 years and we have to pay for it, what a waste of taxpayers money. Hes probably a drug addict (Im just guessing)as are many people in prison. maybe they should have rehabilitation in jails.

Good job SB Swat, I dont understand how the OPD let him get away after he shot at them, how do you get away especially after attempting to murder cops, terrible training I say, the OPD could have cuase this guy to kill again for its mistakes of not caputuring him when they had him.
Good Job SB swat.

I am so frekken relieved they finally caught him. I was so afraid for my little ones to even go out and play.
Finally OPD does something right.
Yup he's screwed. BUT ease off on the fam. I very much doubt they'll be saying anything to deffend this as$ho|e. They're pretty much as well be grieving the loss of their murderous son.

BiggestBrother,
You're an idiot. You weren't there when Aguilar shot at them, you don't know what really happened and how he was able to get away.
This isn't a training issue. As far as him killing again, now you are ready to blame the police for that too!
This isn't a perfect world and police are in a thankless job as your post reiterates that fact.
Your name should be "BiggestDope"

Read This one,
Why dont you enlighten us with the circumstances surrounding his escape? this is America not Mexico or another 3rd world country, we are it for high tech. It just doesnt make sense that he got away. OK it took seconds for the gun battle exchange, then what, they just sat back and gave him a 5 minute lead? they should have been on him like glue, as he had enough time to get in his car so did they.
I dont know, its just doesnt make any sense to me when does some one get away from Cops in America after attempting to murder them? on our streets? it just doesnt happen in America, story doesnt convince me.
