Fund set up to help pair in health crises

A bank fund has been set up to help a Ventura couple hit by a double-punch of health crises.

Steve Maheux of Ventura was diagnosed with cancer of the lymph nodes in 2006 and has successfully finished more than two years of chemotherapy. At the same time, Diane Maheux was in and out of the hospital for complications from Hepatitis C contracted through a blood transfusion some 25 years ago. She was retested in August and is virus-free.

The Maheuxs, profiled in a June 10 story in The Star, said they're paying about $14,000 a year in healthcare costs. Steve Maheux has been forced to miss work without pay because the illness wiped out his vacation and sick time. A back surgery for Diane Maheux in September means more co-pays and other costs.

"We have fallen way behind in all our bills, and I am afraid we will lose our home," Steve Maheux said.

An account to help the Maheuxs has been set up at Wells Fargo Bank in Oxnard. For more information, call Lupe Martinez at 485-9562.

Thanks reader22,
I read the other article, Wow! What a couple. Is this what marriage is about? I think so. It is too bad that when we get hit with a terrible illness, we have to stress about making ends meet too.

May both of you thrive and go on living for many years to come. God Bless you. 0:)

They can come to the HSA and apply for Medi-cal (DED) and Foodstamps if they qualify. Or Ventura County has the ACE program too for those that don't qualify for Medi-Cal. 677-5260 for an application. It's better than nothing!

If you’re able to help, this is a couple that really deserves help. I have known this couple for a long time, it seems they were always helping someone; they worked with youth in the church and youth that did not go to the church, they would meet in the Maheux’s home twice weekly. Both Mr. and Mrs. Maheux were excellent mentors
Mr. Maheux would fix cars for people in the church that were having problems. Mr. Maheux would supply all the labor free and ask people with money to pay for the parts. They helped so many families that way. I could write a book about their generosity, it just goes on. Please help them.
