Crowds filled downtown Ventura's Mission Park Saturday for the 10th annual Ventura County Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Diversity and Pride Festival.
"This is the biggest festival we've ever had," said Michael Quick, 48, the special events planner with the Ventura County Rainbow Alliance. "We have 72 vendors here, and it's not just the gay and lesbian community who are out here today; it's everybody."
The festival was dedicated to slain Oxnard teen Larry King by Oxnard Mayor Tom Holden.
"On one end of the spectrum you have tolerance and embracing and on the other end of the spectrum you have something tragic, which is what occurred in Oxnard not too long ago with Lawrence King," Holden said as he addressed the crowd.
King, 15, who dressed in a feminine manner and told friends he was gay, was shot and killed at E.O. Green School in February. A 14-year-old classmate, Brandon McInerney, has been charged with first-degree murder and a hate crime.
Holden praised the festival as an event that encourages awareness and understanding about the different lifestyles within the county.
The November ballot issue Proposition 8, which seeks to overturn California's same sex marriage law, was a hot topic of conversation at the festival.
"This is very important and it's not a marriage thing, it's an equality thing, and this festival is a way to show how proud we are," said Quick, who married his partner on July 12.
Manny and Andrew Beltran, who married in June, came to the festival with their 1-year-old foster daughter, Linda.
"We're here for the Foster Parents Association, and we're going to help out with the booth here and support the cause," said Andrew Beltran, who explained that they had been caring for Linda since she was a newborn with a view to being able to adopt her one day.
"Being foster parents is the best thing that has ever happened to us in our lives, and we're so grateful for the opportunity," said Manny Beltran.
The focus of many of the booths was health education, HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness, and political involvement.
John Pierce invited people to take a rest on a couple of soft sofas he'd set up and learn about COLOR, or Community Organized for Liberty, Opportunity and Respect.
"We're a gay/straight alliance that wants to end homophobia through serving the community and through community education," he said.
At the Ventura County Public Health booth, Emperatriz Dinedo had a wheel of fortune game, with different kinds of condoms as prizes, and a "guess how many condoms in the jar" competition alongside the leaflets with tips on safe sex.
The festival was also a big social event for many in the gay and lesbian community.
"We're here because we're gay," chorused three teens, 14 to 16 years old, who came to the event together.
"I'm straight, but I have a lot of gay and transgendered friends," said Nikolette Bates, 20, who's a student at Ventura College.
"This is just fun and accepting, and it's good to have a community."

Slkchck- Larry was killed because Brandon is a sick kid. It doesn't matter how much Larry pursued him (which I doubt he did). It was Brandon's relentless hate that made HIM kill Larry.
Stop with the Larry aggressively and relentless bs. It's sickening already.
Glad Larry was honored. He deserves something good out of this.

slkrchck: A flambouyant cross dressing 7th grader stalking? The term "stalker" implies someone who is intent on secretly following and HARMING their victim. Larry might have been pestering and embarrassing Brandon but stalking? Oh Please. Who ever said that this "puppy love" should be encouraged? That comment doesn't make sense. Try decaf and a little less "Wake and Bake" before hitting the keyboard.

Frankly I'm offended by the group's exploitation of King's demise to perpetuate their cause. If anything, they should have taught Larry not to push his philosophy on others... such as Brandon. If they had, Larry might still be alive.

One could see this coming from miles away. This group is a bunch of freaks who should take some of the blame for the kids death.

Rocket81: And exactly how are they to blame? If someone killed a religious zealot, would you also hold the zealot's church responsible?

Had the openly gay assistant principal at EO Green, Joy Epstein, had been more responsible in handling the situation that was brought to her attention in a reasonable manner, as she was required to do for all parties involved, instead of bending the school rules and allowing Larry to cross dress and encouraging him to "express himself" freely because SHE felt it was his constitutional right and it pushed HER agenda as well....Larry King would have been alive today.

Rocket81- There may be some extremist out there wearing their pink fluffy outfits...okay, they have issues. But there are homosexual people out there that aren't flamboyant nor do they throw their sexual identity at others. I have several friends who are gay and do not act in such manner. In fact they are professionals who have the same intentions in life as I do...which is a good thing.
I don't think that "this group" has any blame on Larry's death. How can this be? Larry had troubles and seemed almost lost. He may or may not have been gay...who knows. It could have been a front. Many kids in the system, locked up and in placements have many false identities and portray themselves as something else. Who knows. We will never know.

iseepeople---
In the front page on the Star the day after Larry was shot and killed, there was a girl with pink hair being held by her Mother in front of the school. She was crying.
Now, how in the heck is pink hair allowed but not Larry dressing like a girl? Nobody is even mentioning that....because it's normal for kids to color their hair pink? I don't think so.
If Larry should have been held to that standard, so should all the others...including the gothic looking kids, homies dressing in plaid, khakis, white t-shirts and shaved heads, and punk rockers and the kids sporting body piercings all over their bodies.
If the school is to BLAME, then they should hold ALL of the ABOVE MENTIONED to the same standard.
The ultimate blame is the evil kid that killed him. And I am still waiting to hear about the gun owner...he/she is legally responsible for locking that weapon up and ensuring the protection of others.

ironwoman fancy meeting you here! You say "Larry was killed because Brandon is a sick kid. It doesn't matter how much Larry pursued him (which I doubt he did). It was Brandon's relentless hate that made HIM kill Larry."
I think you need to brush up on the facts of this story before you blurt something out there that is hurtful and just not true. You are willing to stick it to Brandon before you really know the full details of this case.
Larry was no angel either. He didn't deserve death, on that we can agree , but there were a lot of adults who let both of these boys down which lead to it.

Everybody is fogeting that Brandon was the same age as Larry. They were children people. Children are not evil, or sickos. They have immature problems that they handle as children do. Larry was missguided and did things that he wasn't told the consiquinces that could occur by doing these things. Brandon, also missguided. The fault belongs to the system and the people who were suppose to be guiding these two into adulthood. Why aren't both sets of parents on trial? Why isn't the teacher and counselors being held accountable? Brandon is NOT an adult,so lets quit trreating him as if he where!!!

I still do not understand why Mr. McInerney resorted to the use of a gun against Mr. King's conduct first. Physical confrontation was skipped and he went straight to deadly force. Although, I admit, having never been pursed by a homosexual, I do not fully understand the dynamics of the event. I do not know gays to pursue the non-interested.

Ironwoman..I do agree with you on the dresscode for the entire school. Both of my daughters attended EO Green, and the staff there (who was excellent at the time) ENFORCED the dresscode. Yes this was back. before Epstein and a few others entered the picture.
This Newsweek story pretty much covers all the points regarding the King case very well.I noticed that the link to the pdf file I had to the 2006-2007 EO Green dresscode has been diabled. It clearly listed what every child was REQUIRED to wear to school. Somewhere down the road, someone with some authority dropped the ball on all of that and allowed kids to break the rules..and in this case, encouraged it.

myOpenyun, everyday in a heterosexual persons life they are allowed to walk down the street holding hands w/their loved one, kiss in public, marry eachother and so on. You are shoving your lifestyle down the throats of homosexuals by not wanting them to have the same basic human rights as you. It's about equality, not about shoving their "gayness" in your face.

Sorry Handyhood,
But there are evil and sick kids in this world...no doubt. Are you telling me when Jeffery Dahmer was picking up road kill when he was 8 years old, he wasn't sick? And then he grew up he killed people and stuck their bodies in refrigerators? Well, sounds like a sick person to me.
iseepeople- I didn't finish my sentence when I wrote in parenthesis (which I doubt he did)---I was referring to slkchck's "stalking" comment. From what I read in the newsweek article, Brandon bullied Larry because Larry was gay. Brandon was a bully period. AND I am not twisting facts around either or need to brush up on them, I am pretty clear as to what I have read. I am sure there's more that hasn't been open to the public.
Since you read the newsweek article, you also read that Brandon planned it. There's no doubt that he planned to kill him. So, I am going to stick it to him...he didn't have the right to kill Larry. Nobody has that right. Not even gang members have the right to kill their rival. Murder is Murder and murderers belong in prison...and let's not get into that subject.
BUT AS far as the article....good for Larry.

Hell, even Larry's brother went to complain to one of the staff about his brother being allowed to dress in drag..he begged that person to do something about it as even he was being harassed by some of the kids on campus because he was Larry's brother. He was obviously embarassed by his brothers actions. Failure all the way around where the adults were concerned here.

After reading all these posts, I am saddened and sorry to say that I am ashamed to call Ventura County my home. I would have liked to call it a loving and understanding community but unfortunately, that isn't the case. Tolerance is defined as "a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions, practices, race, religion, nationality, etc., differ from one's own; freedom from bigotry," something I feel is lacking from some of these posts. The controversy regarding Larry's murder aside, I feel that we are all members of one community and should embrace the differences among us. myOpenyun, no one is pushing their beliefs on you and I'm sorry you feel that way, we simply wish to coexist and have the same rights and responsibilities as heterosexual men and women. The purpose of these festivals is to show the entire community that heterosexuals, homosexuals, and everyone in between can coexist and have a mutual respect for one another. I wish that they would come around more often.

From the Newsweek article...Epstein's name just keeps coming up doesn't it? I would love to see her do some time for this as well. Sad thing is, I doubt she will..Brandon will be her scapegoat. Very sad that Larry didn't even consider the feelings nor did he respect his own brother enough to step down off his soap box and conform to the schools obedience/dress code standards. He wanted to flaunt his gay lifestyle...very much like those in the gay pride festival. The more flamboyant and loud they are..the better they like it. This is why Larry is gone today.
"There was an unusual student complaint, too. Larry's younger brother, Rocky, 12, also attended E. O. Green, and the kids started picking on him the day in January when Larry showed up in hot pink knee-length boots. Rocky says he went to several school officials for help, including Epstein. "I went up to her at lunchtime," he says. "I said, 'Ms. Epstein, can you stop Larry from dressing like a girl? The kids are saying since Larry is gay, I must be gay, too, because I'm his brother'."

SocialResponsibility..I agree with you..it really is all about mutual respect. That is the key on both sides of the issue. I have a lot of gay friends and I love them just like I love my straight friends...because they DO show that mutual respect we all need to get by in this world. They understand that they don't have to flaunt their sexuality in my face..because, that really is the only difference between us. Everything else outside of that particular aspect of our lives spells humanity.

Roll-It-Up...
See you judged me before I was able to post my last post to Socialresponsibility. That is what is wrong with SOME gays as well. They are willing to judge those who are straight before they know who we are and what we believe. That is no different than a black judging a white as being a bigot..just because they are white. It's called stereotyping..and it runs BOTH ways.

The issue is SOME straight people assume that all gay men are walking around in pink tu tu's and hitting on every straight guy they see. People need to realize that not everyone is like that stereotype. Like Socialresponsibility said, it's all about coexisting.

If we have that, the rest comes a lot easier.

You folks are scary.
Ever heard of the concept "presumption of innocence"? The accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt . . . in a court of law. Whether you agree with it or not, the same concept applies to everyone under the Constitution. Everybody deserves his or her day in court.
I wouldn't want any of you on my jury, and would petition the court for a bench trial and bypass your a***es!

OK Roll_it_up...last word on this one for me. Just the fact that there is a festival for this speaks for ITSELF. Why do they need a festival for it? We don't hold heterosexual parades just because we are heterosexual do we? I suppose you will think I am a homophobic for stating such a thing..but I am not. I would raise an eyebrow to ANYONE who was "acting out" in public because it goes against my grain personally. *NOTE* I said raise an eyebrow...not raise a fist. I wouldn't walk up to them and shove my fist or a sign in their face and say hey...look at me! I am straight and I am proud!
I don't need a parade or festival to show the county I live in that I am who I am...I would just hope people would smile and accept me for who I am..and if they don't..ehhhhh who cares?

I am so disgusted by the continued comments that somehow Larry brought this on by pushing Brandon over the edge with his alleged advances. Brandon had options to complain to someone about it. He had options to ignore it. He had options to get a restraining order if it was as egregious as so many of you seem to think it was. It was his inability to contain his impulses and he chose to shoot Larry rather than to follow a less violent course of action. Suggesting that Larry brought this on himself is the same skewed logic that claims rape victims "wanted it" based on their attire. Has anyone considered that Larry was also tormented constantly and his acting out toward other boys was his means of turning it back on them? He found the single most effective method of upsetting his tormentors (and Brandon was allegedly one of them). I would also guess that Larry was a child who had long ago resorted to getting attention in negative and inappropriate ways because that was likely the only way he ever got attention as a child. Regardless of your feelings about gays, no amount of "pursuit" on Larry's part justifies Brandon's actions. If anything, our homophobic, macho culture put Brandon in a position where he felt his masculinity was so assaulted that he resorted to murder. Anybody want to think about that? How sick is our society that a young boy finds the attention of another boy so horrible that he kills him? It is the uncompromising, ignorant, insensitive, all consuming hate that is displayed in some of these posts that pushed Brandon over the edge.

I think what is happening here is a perfect example of what happens on a much larger scale. The conversation here has moved away from the topic of this article, the Gay Pride Festival and the purpose it set out to accomplish, and has migrated to an argument regarding an ongoing criminal proceeding. The two topics are related, I can't deny that, but I believe that the problem lies in the fact that when discussing controversial issues, the argument shifts, becomes heated, and nothing gets accomplished. I truly believe this is one of the reasons why equal rights have had such an uphill battle in this country.
With regard to iseepeople's last post, I agree that these festivals can become somewhat outlandish, I attend them to be surrounded by people similar to myself and to celebrate the fact that we are now comfortable enough to be open. To some of us, I can't speak for all members of the homosexual community, there is a need to raise awareness and the level of conversation in this country regarding gay issues and I believe the festivals and celebrations trigger those conversations, like it has here. Heterosexuals don't need a festival such as this because they are in the vast majority (common statics say that only 1 in 10 people are homosexual) and are commonly accepted by the general public whereas we as homosexuals still feel the need to show our presence in the community and fight for acknowledgment, respect, and basic human rights.

Grammars. Just as it isn't natural for child to have a mommy and MOMMY, it is not Natural or possible for a women to be pregnant without a man. So How is it that your daughter is expecting? There had to be a male influence somewhere just as there needs to be both a MALE and a female influence in the upbringing of a child. Because society has allowed it to happen we have confused and mixed up kids like Brandon and Larry. God say's that in his eyes homosexuality is an abomanation. If any one who believe's in God, believe's differently then they are saying that God is wrong! If God is wrong then their would be nothing but anarchy in the world and we are all doomed!

Handyhood, do you agree with infertile heterosexual couples using invetro fertilization to help them conceive a child? I am guessing by your statement that you believe the bible to be literally true, there inlays the problem. I am gay and a Catholic and I have no problem reconciling my beliefs with the rest of my life. I am well educated in the Bible having gone to private, religious schools from kindergarten through university but since you seem to know so much maybe you can help me understand a few things.
I am well aware that the bible says it is wrong for one man to lay with another but it also states in Exodus 35:2, in no uncertain terms, that for working on the sabbath, the penalty is death. How do you apply that in today's world? Should we be executing anyone who works on the Sabbath, really? Ventura County is a farming community and many landowners have various types of citrus planed in close proximity to one another, are they violating the standards set in Leviticus 19:19?
I submit to you, that I believe in God, don't believe him to be wrong, but I believe that the ideas of truth and love that he came to this earth to teach are misinterpreted.

So, what your saying is God is wrong. That being the case I guess we don't need to worry about heaven or hell, and since we don't have to worry about that, it doesn't matter what we do. Rape, murder, plunder, and pilage. It doesn't matter because there is no long term consequince for our actions. What's a little jail time if we're caught? Do whatever you want, when you want, because there isn't a punishment except in this life, and the way things are there is only a 50% chance you'll get caught. I'm glad you cleared that up for me. Now I can go out and take whatever I want! No wonder this is a sad, sick world!!!!!

Sir, I don't believe God to be wrong, simply misinterpreted by human beings. It does matter what we do, if I "rape, murder, plunder, and pillage (you misspelled that by the way)" I would be infringing upon the rights and safety of those around me. In no way does my love for someone else infringe upon you. There is punishment in this life and the next, we simply differ in our beliefs about what is sinful.

Julsthemom...you say "geeeeeeeee..iseepeople...interesting take and comments coming from you, the spokesperson for opening a mental hospital because your brother was mentally ill..."
Interesting in what way? My take on the need to have a mental hospital/prison built in this community has nothing to do with this topic...unless you are calling gay people mentally ill and in desperate need of medical help as they are having to live in conditions that are unconstitutionally inhumane? I certainly am not making those type of accusations here.
My point is we are all human, no matter who or what we are. I don't think I have faltered from my position on that...have I? I guess I don't understand your point. I don't wish to change the subject or go off-topic either, but if you would like to explain what you mean I am willing to listen.

Joh, I won't argue with your religious argument because you are entitled to your faith and beliefs but your lifestyle/normal argument has problems. Just because something is the majority doesn't make it normal. Individuality makes this country what it is and it was founded on the idea of pluralism and no one imposing their views on anyone else. A Yes vote on prop 8 simply allows all people the freedom to marry for love in all forms; a No vote imposes your morals and religious beliefs on everyone whether or not they agree with you. The government has no place restricting the rights of same-sex couples to enter into a legal commitment offered to heterosexual couples. A couple is a couple regardless of gender and love is love.

I just got home from Church and I can't believe that socialresponsibility made that last statement about the government having no rights making restrictions on peoples rights. We the people are the goverment. We the people have the right to impose any law or restriction on anything that we the people choose. God made Adam a woman to be a helpmate. God has told us that a MAN and a WOMAN will be joined together as man and wife. Not man and man nor woman and woman. We the people can impose any law we want on everyone else as long as the majority decide. It's called DEMOCRACY(notice I spelled it right)VOTE YES ON 8. The people will decide.

Iseepeople> No I am not saying that lesbians and homosexuals are mentally ill...they do NOT choose this lifestyle...they are born that way and I speak as the sister of a lesbian. However, I will not USE my personal experience to allow emotion to dictate my arguments...much like you have done regarding your brother's unfortunate experience with supporting a Prison Hospital. Despite my acceptance of lesbians and homosexuals and belief that they have every right to have their event...as I do not believe that Larry Kings murder was a true hate crime and feel that his murder was exploited at this event and have to wonder how much the prosecution had to do with setting that up. Before ya'll bash me...I will tell you that my sister was killed so, again, I speak from experience...Larry Kings family who did not accept him are now trying to profit from his death which is disgusting to say the least.

julsthemom...I am sorry for the death of your sister...we both know the hurt that goes along with losing a sibling. Also I am sorry I still don't understand the point you are trying to make and the beef you have with me. You tell me "I will not USE my personal experience to allow emotion to dictate my arguments..." Yet you do just that in the rest of your post. I don't find anything wrong with using personal experience to dictate any type of argument at all..whether it is building a mental facility, teaching a child how to cope with a problem, or even handing out advice to a friend. There are many situations where I use my personal experience on many levels to help me get through my day. I guess you and I are just on different pages and will just agree to disagree.
Perhaps if someone would have used their own personal experience to talk to Larry and Brandon, their situations would have been different today. Using personal experience is in no way exploiting a situation...at least not in my book. If you had any idea of some of the personal experiences I have encountered through my life..it would blow your socks off. Believe me.

How is changing the consitution to prevent same-sex marriages NOT forcing YOUR lifestyle on THEM? True Christianity says that you should not JUDGE! Let them live their lives without your interference! If the law now says it's legal, leave them be! Fine, let the churches forbid it, that's a religious choice...even though in my opinion it's wrong for Christians to force their beliefs on others, but that is their choice. The government, however, is different...separation of church and state, and all that.
There are so many more important things in life besides caring about what other people do! I live my own life and I let them live theirs! I don't understand why people care so much. I guess they think this will devalue straight marriage. I think the divorce rate has already done that...most straight people don't take marriage seriously so I'm not sure how gay marriage could make that any worse...
I agree with SocialResponsibility about the misinterpretation of the bible. It was not written by God, it was written by Man. Even if God gave the men their words, it was still open to their own interpretation. Haven't you every played Operator? And it was still written about the rules of the times. Times change. Did the bible say something about mentruating women needing to be segregated?
For the record, I'm straight, married, and the daughter-in-law of a pastor. And what he taught me is not to judge, not to force my views on people, and to be accepting of others and their choices.
I know this was off topic and I'm sure some close-minded jacka** is going to mouth off about this. I'm ok with that.
No one is going to change anyone's mind about something like this by reading comments on a newspaper article. I don't think that anyone's views will change on this subject until something changes in their personal life...like a son or daughter telling them they're gay

I read all comments but found it odd no one talked about the participation of the Mayor of Oxnard, Tom Holden, leading in comments about the festival. In Ventura?
Question, If the Mayor of Oxnard was so concern and excited about the Gay Festival, why didn't he organize one for Oxnard? If he was so concern about the EO Green incident, why didn't he participate with the candle light Vigil for PEACE for Larry King shortly after the shooting? Why didn't Tom Holden participate in the Peace March from EO Green School to Plaza Park, in his own city? In fact, none of the local elected officials participated in either event, except for one school board trustee. Where was the Mayor then?
Why wasn't a Key of the City given to the King Family. Why wasn't there a Resolution given to the family for Larry King? Maybe these things didn't take place then but may come to pass.
Why now??
Oh Yes, it makes sense now. It's Campaign Season.

We have freedom of religion in the USA and with that comes freedom from religious prosecution.
Believe what you want....live as you choose. But do not take actions to infringe on my same rights to do so as well.
A vote in support of Prop 8 is a judgment of same-sex couples who just want to do all they can to protect their families. And as a judgment, voting yes on Prop 8 is also a sin.

How are the teachers or principals responsible for any of this? Because a teacher encouraged Larry to be comfortable with himself? Love himself? When do the parents start taking responsibility? Too many people expect the school system to raise our children and teach them right and wrong rather than doing their jobs as a parent. Teachers are there for an education, not moral values. Those are what we should be teaching at home. If BRandon's parents had taught him those values, he would know murder is not the correct action to be taking.

That child will grow up in a home with two loving parents which is more than I can say for a great many children being raised by heterosexual parents surely we can agree on that.
As far as your vote on Prop 8, you are entitled to your vote guaranteed to everyone in this country but I'm still confused as to how you are getting around the separation of Church and State. The government has no place legislating values. I've said it before and I'll say it again; take a look at prohibition and look at what happened the last time a constitutional amendment was passed to regulate a social issue. Same-sex marriage in no way affects you and the government should only be concerned with protecting it's citizens, nothing else.
One last thing, please don't feel sorry for me, I'm very content with my life and secure in my faith.

Time to face the facts -
1 - There is no religious element to a civil marriage. There is no religious requirement and no religious ideals should have any effect on how the government deals with marriage.
2 - There is no "child bearing" requirement for a legal marriage in the USA. No one has to be able to bear children or even want to bear children to be legally married in the USA.
There is no logical or legal reason to restrict marriage rights from same-sex couples!!!
The time has come to end the discrimination!!!

Gosh I wish you people would stop with the name calling..it's really getting old. Just because a person has a different view than you does NOT mean they are closet gays, bigots, ignorant, ostentacious or anything else. It means they simply DON'T agree with you or the lifestyle you lead. What is this? We don't have a right to our opinions but you have every right to yours...and then some? Annawheat is not a closet gay bigot. I can attest to that. She is a woman with an opinion. Give it a rest already.
The social issues the gay community is faced with each and every day are one thing..but the rudeness and name calling is quite another..from both sides. I can't tell you how many times I have bitten my tongue in this forum.
This is and always has been...and always will be a controversial issue. We might as well accept it for what it is and move on.
I happen to believe that SocialResponsibility is just that..and she expresses herself in such a way that is gracious and respectful and still gets her point across. I may not agree with every point she makes, but because of her presentation I can certainly show her or give her the respect she deserves. There are others here who should try and follow her example while making their points.

Promoting safe sex through condom games is a great idea although having it present at a family event may not have been the most appropriate idea. We all deserve the right to marry who we love. If you don't believe in same sex marriage, then don't marry someone who is the same gender as you. People think that same sex marriage makes a "mockery" of marriage. I believe that Britney Spears, J-Lo, Elizabeth Taylor, etc. have already done that with their multiple, blink-and-you-missed-it marriages. Welcome to 2008, people.
Posted by iseepeeple on August 26, 2008 at 10:34 a.m. (Suggest removal)
jeff, personally I don't think the point of the condom game was to teach children or anyone else about safe sex. It was done more to desensatize their minds. Something that has been taking place in more ways then I care to mention. Exposure is not always a good thing for children at a young age. Some parents choose to protect their children beyond the age of 12 or 14 and wish to tell them when THEY believe their children are ready to hear about it. They don't want others taking over their responsibilities as parents to teach their children about safe sex. Last I looked, parents still have a right to raise their children as they see fit. Enough is shoved down our kids throats and the pressure is tremendous without adding sex to the mix when they are such a young age. Believe me, I am not really strict when it comes to my kids...but I did raise them to with what I thought were good morals respectfully...and it was my right to do so. They trusted me to give them the truth when they asked for my opinion on certain issues, and I gave it to them because if they are ready and willing to ask, then they are ready to wanting to know the truth. My kids were both around the age of 14 when we crossed that bridge and it worked out perfectly for us.
This condom game sounds more like a game thrown at one of those lingerie parties FOR ADULTS..then a game played at a festival...gay or straight. It was inappropriate.

I did not see any children at the event without their parents.
Those parents had the right to monitor what was going on and it really was no one else business.
Condoms do not encourage sex.....but they do encourage SAFE SEX!!!
And that is ALWAYS a good thing!
GOD BLESS!

Anna, of course you have a right to your opinion and to voice it, as you should. I actually really appreciate the fact that you include stats in your arguments. I can agree with you on that last one (the argument behind it) about the difference between love and lust. I think too often they are mistaken for one another. That is another reason I believe gay marriage should continue to be legal, not just in California but throughout the country. Yes, it is just a piece of paper but it is much more than that. The symbolism alone is overwhelming. Beyond that, I believe it should be available to everyone, regardless of who they choose to marry. Notice I say choose because I can concede that point. I don't believe being gay is chosen however, I hope we all can agree that we individually make a choice to sleep with someone or not and to commit oneself to someone else or not.
iseepeople, thank you so much for the compliment. I would like to clear something up though. I am not a woman, I am actually a 24 year old male who happens to be gay. Couldn't make the least bit of difference but I just wanted to clear it up. I think more damage is done to your cause if you make a personal attack at someone than you help it with sound arguments. I made this mistake in an earlier post when I took a cheap shot at handyhood. I hope I articulate my arguments in the same way that people say they hate the sin but not the sinner, I have deep respect for people and their right voice their opinion, whether or not I agree with it. Don't get me wrong though, when I disagree with it, you're going to know about it.
Scapegoat, thank you for making me laugh! If it were mine to give, you would have the word back in an instant.

I have learned not to worry about things that are of little consequence which is just one more reason why I am extremely passionate about this subject.
Thank you for your apology, the compliment was very thoughtful and I am humbled.

jeffinventura ,I just dont think its appropriate for 6 and 7 year olds to guess how many condoms are in a jar......................
I know they save lives but to play a game like that with little children is not appropriate.
Also JeffinVentura I am not an ugly face. Perhaps if you actually saw me you would turn the other way...........You put down everyone that doesn't agree with you. Your full of hate.
Camdad101 . I do not hate the people as you call them. As if they are not human huh? I hate the sin not the sinner!!!!!!
Jeff try explaining to a 4 year old what a condom is and how its used. Thats sick!!!!!
SocialResponsibility , I would also like to say I do not hate you. I may not agree with you or your lifestyle. But that is your business. You may be a great person and a great friend to have. I do not know. And just because your gay I would not refuse to be your friend.

anna -
You do not know my "lifestyle" so please do not use that divisive term to describe me as gay.
As I stated before, no children were present without their parents. And it is up to the parents of children to discuss what condoms are....NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!!!
The suggestion that you state gay people are some how more sinful than heterosexual people, that is ridiculous! You do not know the sins of other people and it is impossible for you to guess what others sins are.....and for you to make judgments of others based on imaginary sins you THINK they have committed, is a sin in itself.
The state has LEGAL same-sex marriages and it will continue to honor and celebrate those unions no matter what happens in November!!
Those families deserve EQUAL RIGHTS to any other family in California!!!
And no matter what you choose to believe, it will be done!!!
GOD BLESSES ALL FAMILIES EQUALLY!

No on 8! Why is it anyone's business if two people who love each other want to get married? I don't think some of my straight friends should have married their spouses but that's not my business, either. A same-sex relationship doesn't make it anymore my business than it was before.

I agree that the LGBT community is using this King thing to their advantage. Parents should use this to teach tolerance to their children and tell them they should be accepting and understanding of different people. Homosexuality isn't going anywhere they deserve the same rights as everyone else! VOTE NO ON PROP 8!

Um, sorta sounds like you care myOpenyun. We heteros flaunt our lifestyle all the time, every chance we get. They get one day and you take exception. What a shame. No on 8!
