The strongest candidate won the job as athletic director at Hueneme High.
In more ways than one.
Former Olympic shot putter Dave Laut has been hired as the school's athletic director, announced first-year Hueneme principal Adrian Palazuelos.
Laut is a former NCAA champion and winner at the 1979 Pan American Games.
"His roots in Hueneme High are really rich," said Dr. Palazuelos. "His passion for athletics and academics were key for him."
Laut was the school's track coach for eight years before leaving for a physical education position for one year at Frontier High. He replaces Juan Flores, who was the athletic director for two years.
"Frontier High was a good situation with good teachers," said Laut, "but I couldn't pass on chance to come back to Hueneme."
Laut has been in contact with former athletic director Jim Lane, who has offered his assistance.
"There were a lot of things about being an athletic director that I didn't know," said Laut. "I am in the process of developing an operation manual. I've asked Jim to be by my side for our first football game (at home Sept. 12 against Santa Clara)."
Two key points — opening lines of communication with coaches and building a strong booster club base — have been already addressed.
"Dr. Palazuelos is very open and transparent," said Laut. "Over the last two weeks, he's worked hard to solve some problems.
"We are trying to get our booster club back on board. We want to get together to where we have a common goal."
During the summer, Hueneme hired Gary Hernandez as the girls' basketball coach. Hernandez was the first girls' coach at Pacifica.
