Sewage spills on PCH after truck overturns
A septic-tank truck overturned Wednesday on Pacific Coast Highway in Ventura County, spilling an estimated 5,500 gallons of sewage two miles north of the Los Angeles County line, authorities said.
Abraham Lemus, 53, of Oxnard was driving the truck southbound from Oxnard-based Ely Jr's Pumping when the accident occurred about 4:40 a.m., said Officer Mike Untalan of the California Highway Patrol. Traveling in a convoy with four other trucks, Lemus overturned on a curve for an undetermined reason, Untalan said. No injuries were reported.
Ely Jr's Pumping contained and vacuumed the sewage spill and sanitized the area, the Ventura County Environmental Health Division reported.
The sewage spilled onto about 100 feet of roadway and dirt alongside the highway but did not reach the ocean. Affected dirt and sand were removed, environmental health officials said, but people should avoid soil and pavement contact in the area for at least 72 hours.
Southbound PCH lanes were closed at Las Posas Road near Point Mugu, and northbound lanes were closed at the Los Angeles County line for about three hours after the crash.
