Yoga hits the beach and board sports

Peggy Hall, a certified yoga instructor and personal trainer based in Aliso Viejo, is taking her "Yoga for Surfers" instructional DVDs beyond the beach.

Her new title, "Yoga for Board Sports," intertwines yoga with board sports from surfing to snowboarding. Along with the rest of the series, it's available for order at $19.95 on http://www.YogaForSurfers.com, Hall's Web site.

Hall first took yoga classes hoping to fix her chronic shoulder pain. Not only did her shoulder heal, she realized that yoga boosted her surfing.

She said she believes that yoga's benefits meld perfectly with boarding's physical and spiritual demands. Hall focuses on breathing, balance, and meditation along with a blend of yoga poses that target key muscles.

But her emphasis isn't on the poses or even the flexibility and strength they develop. Hall said yoga hones calmness, focus, and awareness — all of which translate on and off the board.
