Ventura teenager dies in Nevada car crash

Download Podcast  Download this story as a podcast!

A Ventura teen was killed in the Nevada desert this week after she was thrown from a sport utility vehicle about 60 miles north of Ely, authorities said.

Lucero Torres, 15, was in the back seat when her aunt lost control of the SUV while heading south on U.S. Highway 93, the Nevada Highway Patrol reported. Lucero and her relatives were returning from a family get-together in Idaho when the crash occurred about 8:15 a.m. Sunday.

Eight people were in the vehicle, Highway Patrol spokeswoman Genevieve Carter said, but Torres was the only one killed. The others, including her 38-year-old aunt, Aurelia Aparicio De Chacon of Bakersfield, were treated at William B. Rorie Hospital in Ely, Carter said.

The Highway Patrol reported that Chacon "became inattentive, drove off the road and lost control." Torres was not wearing a seat belt, Carter said.

The girl's father, Leopoldo Torres, said his daughter was outgoing and "someone who loved to talk to her friends on the phone and listen to music on her iPod."

The eldest of four children, the teen was born in Santa Barbara. Torres said his daughter would have been a junior at Ventura High School this year.

Torres said his daughter left for Bakersfield on Thursday. From there, she traveled to Idaho with her relatives for a birthday party.

"She was a very special girl," he said.

A funeral is planned Friday at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura, he said.

I wonder with eight people in a SUV if she even had a seat belt to use?

Very sad and probably preventable. My condolences.

My condolences to the family.

I can not bring myself to even imagine what you are going through.

May the lord bless all of you and fill you with his spirit.

6 bucks- agreed. Everyone else was ok, but she was thrown? I bet everyone else was buckled up.

Sorry for the family............

I know this is a tradgic accident however, this put me off a tad and struck me as an odd discription.

"The girl's father, Leopoldo Torres, said his daughter was outgoing and 'someone who loved to talk to her friends on the phone and listen to music on her iPod.'"

I love how all the grown up's need seat belts (afraid of getting cited, and probably think the child wont) and the little girl is not wearing one.

THEY MADE SEAT BELT LAWS BECUAS OF ALL THE CHILDREN THAT GET THWORN FROM VEHICLES. WHEN BABIES WERE GETTING DECAPITATED, THE STATE DECIDED TO MAKE IT A LAW.

high_society, I agree. Maybe her father can't express himself like others can, coupled with this is probably the hardest time he has had discussing his doughtier. Only 15

The article said she was not wearing her seatbelt, so lets give it a rest, the young lady lost her life!

RebelGal...it's probably pretty hard to come up with an eloquent description of your 15 year old daughter in the first few days after she was traumatically killed in a terrible car accident.
I'm just saying.

Livininpoormanspv-

Out of curiosity - why do you have to re-write all of your posts in spanish? It's kind of annoying...

Mr. Torres, I am so sorry for the loss of your daughter - many of us cannot even put our feet in your shoes, because it's so unbearable, i'm sure to say the least.
I have found that family could be of good support - but usually during a time like this everyone grieves so differently as grief is such a strange cycle for every individual. I myself have taken the classes in Bereavement Support, and I strongly urge you Sir, to please, for the sake of you and young ones, reach out and get some support such as:

I wish you well Mr. Torres, and I pray for you and your children.

Poor kid, I guess Cadillac Escalades are not as safe as they thought.
I can also say that there are times when my child wants to lay down in the back set on long trips and takes off the seat belt. When traffic get bad I tell my child to buckle up.

Posted by mauid2005 on August 20, 2008 at 10:34 a.m. (Suggest removal)

This is a definite tragedy and I'm sorry for the family. But I do wonder why she was not wearing a seat belt and where she was seated. If it's an 8 seater, there should be 8 belts. Unless it was a 7 seater with 8 people. Everyone, no matter the age, should always wear a seat belt.

And not that I'm defending him, but perhaps he put his post in Spanish because he thinks the family speaks Spanish? But he should have checked his English spelling before translating into Spanish and even then, you can't use an online translator for the entire paragraph because it just comes out dumb ...

My family and I were on the scene of this accident on our way from Idaho to Vegas. It was devastating. All we could do is pray and cry with the family while we waited for the ambulance to arrive. We didn't know their names until we found this article.

Believe me the family is totally aware of their mistakes and wish they could take that day back. I just signed up for this forum. Is its purpose to "preach" to these people or consul? Words cannot express how awful it was and so I want to let the family know I'm still praying for you. Now I have names to put with your faces (if you are even reading this).

After leaving the scene of the accident I cried for an hour on the road and gave my 11-year old a huge hug (I didn't want to let go). It has affected me greatly, so I can't even imagine how it must be affecting you.

dp
PS - If your thinking of this family in your prayers just know that there were actually 9 people in the car (including Torres).

Hey girls Hueneme & HS!!!!

This is the FIRST time I have ever done that, I got the idea from another poster (you may be confusing me with).

And the reason I did it was because I want to make sure that people that can't read ENGLISH can have some idea about the LAWS about SEAT BELTS that they may be too busy to learn or care about.

And I used babelfish. I WISH I COULD interpret read/write Espanol!!! That would be awesome. I dropped out of Spanish in HS, I couldn't stand the head phone thing, gross!

RIP Lucero, so young too soon so very sad

Thanks Junior....someone with a brain!

This is VERY upsetting to me, and yes i made some typos because i was typing fast.

vcsexplorer11-----AH THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS LIGHT TRAFFIC! WHAT IF SOME DRUNK THOUGHT EVERYONE WAS GOING 90 BUT THEY WERE REALLY GOING 35 AND THEY PLOWED INTO THE BACK OF YOUR VEHICLE THROWING YOUR CHILD RIGHT OUT THE WINDOW. DID YOU GO TO DRIVERS EDUCATION? WHAT IGNORANCE!

Posted by vcsexplorer11 on August 20, 2008 at 4:01 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Between desert cities there are long distances of road with low traffic. This is a exception to the rule and rarely do I do let my child lay down without the seat belt, especially because the back seat reclines.

My GUESS is that there were 2 factors here. One was that the lady was most likely on her cell phone of distracted by something she shouldn't be doing, the second is she had no knowledge how to control her car to avoid overcompensation when it went out of control.

There needs to be a video game that shows how to avoid car accidents. NO, not GTA.

Wow, your kidding right? Uh if the driver made sure all her passengers were wearing there seat belts this girl may still be alive. My son can lay back fine with his seat belt on. I won't put my car in drive until EVERYONE is wearing seat belt, because that is my duty as the RESPONSIBLE driver.

HS I have to tell you, that get's me too! I take my friends phone away, if they need me to make the call or text for them I do. I hand my son my phone to do the same if i am driving, it is not worth it!

My condolences to this family and my prayers are with you.

I'm sure most of you are not as old as me. But I remember as a little girl my family traveled to Colorado every year. Of course we did not use seat belts back in those days (I don't think our car even had seat belts?) I used to lay in the back window as we traveled down the highway or lay on the floor board with pillows. I even remember my kids standing in the back seat and yelling at them to sit down and stop jumping around. I don't know how any of us are alive today. Can't imagine not wearing a seat belt anymore much less my grandchildren.

Buckle up people........Click it or Ticket

Everyone’s posting about buckle up. And that’s fine. But most of you are forgetting 1 thing.

<The Highway Patrol reported that Chacon "became inattentive, drove off the road and lost control." >

Not only is the driver responsible for belting everyone. (As a couple of you have said) she is also responsible for how she was driving. I sure she’s upset now. But she is responsible. We all are responsible for our driving; I see it every day. People not paying attention, to they’re driving. I’m also seeing more people using cell phone to the ear.

I actually knew her, we have had classes together since middle school. She was very social and very funny. she always said things that made people laugh and she was very nice. I heard today in an assembly that she died and I couldn't believe it, I thought it had to be a mistake. I felt so numb the rest of the assembly thinking how I would never see her again, that her life was gone. I can't help but wonder why it had to be her, she was one of the nicest and funniest people I've met. The class clown at times, and she did get angry sometimes but she was a truly nice person. I had her last year in english and P.E.... R.I.P Lucero.....wow, so unbelievable....

Posted by live_for_purpose on August 23, 2008 at 9:32 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Most SUVs can only legally seat 7 people at most, although some can seat 8 or maybe 9. People should not overload vehicles either by weight or by number of people (I am not saying that is what happened here). I wonder if there was a free seatbelt for her that she could have used?

gribble -
I'm so sorry for the loss of your friend - tell your friends that i answered your comment - and i will be praying for all of you to get on with your new school year, i know you all will treasure her memory for the rest of your lives. You kids be strong okay. Remember always to buckle up without being reminded to. This is an ugly lesson for all of us. Keep your spirits up and remember that many of us are thinking of you and praying during this difficult time.
