Morning Report: Ventura liquor store clerk beaten during attempted robbery

Police and Fire: A clerk at a Ventura liquor store was beaten last night by a man who tried to rob the business, police said.

The man walked into College Liquor at 4220 Telegraph Road just after 9 p.m. and demanded money from the clerk, police said in a prepared statement.

When the clerk refused to open the register, the man began punching him and knocked him to the ground.

The clerk began calling police and tried to grab onto the attacker to prevent him from escaping.

The attacker pointed a handgun at the clerk and continued hitting him, then left and ran westbound on Telegraph Road, police said.

The attacker was described as a tall man about 18 to 20 years old with short brown hair, police said.

The clerk, a 62-year-old Ventura resident, suffered minor injuries such as bruises and abrasions in the attack. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Police are asking anyone with information about the crime to call detectives at 339-4394.

To give an anonymous tip, call Crime Stoppers 1-800-222-TIPS. Tipsters who give information that leads to an arrest could receive up to $1,000 cash.

"The clerk, a 62-year-old Ventura resident, suffered minor injuries such as bruizes".

Is a bruize anything like a bruise? ;-}

Maybe it's the guy who robbed the bank in Oxnard last Saturday? Just a thought....Also do they have any photo's of this recent robbery?

Posted by hotwildflower on August 20, 2008 at 8:02 a.m. (Suggest removal)

This is just so terribly sad. I thought the rule was to always turn over the money to prevent harm to yourself.

Regardless, as if this guy wasn't scum enough to be robbing some place, but he is even lower for hitting a 62 year old man!

I hope when the police catch him, they give him a few "bruizes" from me!

Another wonderful description. Was he wearing a mask? And gloves? Oh yeah, he had short hair. Oops, they said brown. Tall would depend on how tall the clerk is. And all this info from a prepared statement.

hotwildflower, I agree. It's is a chicken s**t thing to do, beating an elderly gentleman. But, there are some pretty tough 62 year olds out there. Back in the day, when my grandfather was 62, he would have put a hurt on this young punk. Suffice it to say, the robber would be robbin' no more! I hope they catch this thug.

The robber shouldn't even be called a person, seems more like a-hole. Hope the clerk gets well soon from the beating.

I grew up in the area and it used to not be that way. I agree if that was my Grandfather or Dad at age 62, the punk would have definitely met his match. The thing is, he will get caught sooner or later.

I was right by there just at this time! CRAZY! I Didn't see anything. Crap, I stopped at mandells on my way back from my Late Evening Snapper Jack Attack, if this guy decided to hit Mandell's I would have been in the thick of it. I can't wait to get my new taser! If anyone so much as looks at me funny, they are getting the shock of there life!

Hotwildflower, you make 62 years old seem ancient, although I'm sure it wasn't your intent. I'm 64, but as we get older we tend to protect vigorously what is ours. We've had our share of fair fights (fists) and some of us are not intimidated by punks. Although I would probably regret it, I invite some punk to try and take my hard earned money.

I doubt you need anything more than a HS Diploma to work for the Star, and a HS Diploma these days are a joke. The Vocabulary and Spelling that I witness from our young adults is beyond comprehension. (not to mention what I read in our very own newspaper, appalling!)

What is happening to our schools, especially with the increased immigration, you think they would make it tougher instead of easier. It makes me ILL!

Don't you see all those ad's for employment with the Star? They will hire ANYONE!

White Male Adult, 18-20 years of age, 5’ – 11”, 6’ – 00”, short brown hair, unknown clothing.

This is the description from the police press release.

It takes a real punk low life to beat up a 62 year old man !! This just sickens me. I really hope they had video in the store and he is caught really fast......
I think it takes a real chiken to beat up an elderly man. I have seen like thirty suspects so far today from the description......geezzzzzz

Posted by hotwildflower on August 20, 2008 at 9:22 a.m. (Suggest removal)

That was not my intent. My dad is 74 and I know he would whoop some punks behind as well, but I also know that he would have bruises that take longer to heal and would be recovering longer than he would have in the past. I guess when I see someone this age, I immediately think of my dad and would never want anyone hurting him...cause then I would have to show this punk what an angry 30ish woman can do!

To those of you who ALWAYS complain of the descriptions given of the criminal, have you ever stopped to think that neither the Star or the Police make them up...that's just what the victim was able to catch before they were attacked, DUH People think about it!

daugtherofimmigrant, it's been corrected.

Posted by daugtherofimmigrant on August 20, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. (Suggest removal)

LivinPoorManSPV - Somehow someway Immigration, Latinos, or illegals, comes up even when it has nothing to do with them.
Although I do agree that we are getting more and more immigrants everyday, I don't think this has anything to do with the way people spell or teachers being tougher or easier.
See in my school years 80's and 90's. We didn't have what you call "SPELL CHECK" basically this has unabled our children to spell, when they spell a word half @ss they get little red scribbles saying "hello you didn't spell it correctly" they don't have to look up the word all they do is hit the spell check button, and it will correct the word for them.
This is the kind of damage it has done not only to our children but our selves, I am guilty as well.
As an employer I am amazed (or maybe not) of how many applications I receive with so many misspelled words this from all races.
Our kids not only do they not know how to spell but math has gone down hill as well all thanks to calculators. It's very different to when we were growing up. Now not only don't they know how to spell but they speak another language called IM or something like that. I wont even touch the “texting” subject. When I was in school we weren't allowed to use calculators, and reports through computers were only done by those who could afford computers, my reports were hand written and always got a lower grade because it wasn't as nice as the type written reports.

JM and Ana - LOL! I was on the late train sorry, they must not have spell check. LOL!

daugtherofimmigrant

Seriously spell check makes everyone so lazy!

And just so you know I meant in no way to place blame or have my comments construed as derogatory about immigration, it is just that there are so many people that are flocking to California, interstate especially. Our schools are so overcrowded! My son is 18 and I can't beleive some of the most basic words he can not spell. It is scary actually!

Posted by opns on August 20, 2008 at 11:30 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Spell check makes you productive, don't have to be lazy to be productive. So don't use a calculator, see how quickly you'll get booted out of your job - use pencil. It's called progression and succession, not regression. Not sorry, but i'm an optimist. Stop complaining and use the tools you have to make a better place.
So next time you go to the doctor to get medical help, you tell the doctor not to use that tool, because your pessimist. and that you want him to use the old tools. Not the newer ones because they were created with the tools such as a calculator and other great tools invented.
So stop your wining.

OPNS - Not wining, (although it did kind of sound like it huh?:O)) I love any tool that helps me out, we are just saying that although it does makes us productive, our kids are not learning how to spell anymore because they use the spell check yet they most times they don't bother to see how the words are spelled correctly.

Anyway, I wonder if this man would go back to work, I would be to frightened. But I am sure the other idiot will think twice about robbing someone else young or not.

daugtherofimmigrant - in the long run - the kids will pick it up with spell check, with repitition you know. Kids learn quick. Their sponges. So give them more credit than that. Best way to teach them, is although you have spell check, keep the dictionary on the desk always, Rule #1.

dgrate - your an instigator - stop it.

Oh and by the way, i've worked with engineers, lawyers, doctors, chemist, scientist, whom are very intelligent - and don't know how to spell - so go figure. In otherwords don't get stuck on that typo when reading the resumes. It might hurt your organization. Or cost you your job.

hhmmmm back to the topic. The uneducated.

I too work in a "professional" office and am amazed at the misspellings and poor grammar in letters we are sending out to our customers. It's not from kids either, these are people well into their 30's, 40's, and 50's that are writing these letters.

I don't think the problem is the schools as much as it is the general mindset these days of people not taking as much pride in what they do. Not that I'm any great role model but I know I'd personally be embarrassed to send out a letter with misspelled words but so many people these days seem to have a mindset of, "It doesn't matter, you know what I mean to say," not knowing or caring how it reflects on themselves and on our company.

Posted by NightLight on August 20, 2008 at 1:01 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Oh and back on the article, unfortunately giving up the money doesn't always guarantee your safety. I think I read that the businessman in Oxnard who was killed in the bank parking lot didn't even have a chance, the killer just went up to him and shot him. I think some criminals are sick enough to enjoy beating or killing people on top of the actual theft.

Posted by daugtherofimmigrant on August 20, 2008 at 1:12 p.m. (Suggest removal)

OPNS - no, no I would never turn away an applicant because they can't spell, I know they can spell check everything once they get to work, what amazes me is the litle effort they put in to having a resume well done, I mean use the spell check!! I guess that is where I consider someone being lazy, I see a resume as a reflection of who you are and your talents, experience and such. If I have a resume that looks like it was done in 10 minutes and basic words mispelled I still interview them and suggest that they work on the resume just for future use.
I do give kids a lot of credit they can figure some stuff out that would take me a while. But I can't help getting annoyed if my daughter asks me how to spell something so simple (she is 15). I don't worry about it because eventually (hopefully) she will have a career and all she will need to do is hit that wonderful button (spell check) and tah-dah!
I hear you about Engineers, lawyers and such, I've worked with them too! What about their writing YIKES!!! LOL!! I think we are all guilty though. Im a horrible speller.
BTW - I have a dictionary right next to the computer as well, I did that when my daughter started asking me how to spell words for her.

I hope you didnt call me a dummy? Gees! :O(

I have to agree regarding the total lack of spelling skills amongst the young folks these days. Hands down, text messaging has to be the most ridiculous invention of the 21st century. Sad thing is, texting is the only thing some kids read all day. Books . . . what are those? Public library . . . what's that?

Posted by hotwildflower on August 20, 2008 at 1:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Some people simply have trouble spelling, doesn't make them dumb or unproductive citizens.

Some kids could probably do better with spelling if their parents took the time to work on their spelling and teach them a few secrets to remembering some of the spelling rules.

Then there are some who are naturally blessed with a great spealling ability. Doesn't make them any better either.

I think texting could lead to poor spelling, but I wouldn't blame it alone. My kids text, heck, I probably text just as much as them and it hasn't hurt any one in our family...

My two cents.

Now catch this jerk!

daugtherofimmigrant - 'thanks to calculators and spell check' - no i wasn't calling you dummy - unless the shoe fits. Now if you smack your kid because of a simple work, i'll call you worse.
As far as the resumes go, I oversaw a DOD building go up and had to review thousands of resume's, when your looking at volumes like this, i looked between the lines and first impressions were upmost. First impressions are the most important.
And also because I saw technology move so rapidly, i have strong convictions of progression. I am a very very proud american and has worked with many rspectable people, our children will one day be there, so for people who go slapping their kid upside the head, i don't have respect or tolerance for. Remember--- the kid hit upside the head, may be the victimizer one day.
Respect children and you will respect children in return.
(And this is generalized to everyone) don't take it personal, if the shoe does not fit! I am not attacking anyone.
Regards

How are students being pushed to use "spell check" at school? Last time I checked, the DESKS most schools have now don't have spell check. (they're lucky if they have 4 legs!!!). If they're using spell check, then it's AT HOME. Don't blame education, nor the teachers. Elementary school teachers push the dictionary and thesaurus at students.

I only read through half the posts, but have to say I was very amused at all the critical comments re: poor spelling and grammar. What was so amusing what that a good percentage of the folks writing those posts spelled words incorrectly. In addition to the incorrect spellings there were many grammatically incorrect sentences as well as poor word usage. It might behoove us all to step back and review ourselves before we start being overly critical of others. Seriously, some of the errors in those posts were pathetic and made even moreso given that the content of the post was to complain about the writing of other people.

I think it's probably a good idea to remember that these message boards are quite informal. And, while I'm sure most of us try to review our message before posting, I'm also sure that most of us don't pay as much attention as we would to a more critical piece of writing. (and how was that for a run-on sentence!?)

Someone brought up the fact that resumes s/he reviews frequently have misspelled words. Then this person goes on to say that that alone would not eliminate the person from the running. In this case, I disagree. A resume is a very important document and is your first opportunity to put your best face forward. If an applicant can't take the time to proofread his/her resume and run it through spell check, then I probably don't want the individual as an employee. And it's true that many highly intelligent people are terrible spellers. My advice then would be to use spell check and have someone proofread your resume for you before sending it out.

Finally, I also noticed a fair amount of hand wringing from parents whose children made it through school without the ability to spell well. I would respectfully say that the parents are as much to blame as the schools here. After all we're the first teachers of our children. And that aside, there really are people who just simply can't spell well and that's generally not a reflection of their intelligence.

"...you are as near to a perfect parent as any of us will ever be".

Thanks You Camdad, i'll take it - i for one don't like to sound egotistical - so many people are so quick to pick out the imperfections of the good parents due to their jealousy and ignorance.
I'm thankful for your understanding. So many of us good parents put so much love and gods warnings very very seriously.
Respectfully
