Helicopter rescues man who fell while hiking
A 45-year-old Simi Valley man was rescued from a steep cliff after he slipped down an embankment while hiking Monday, authorities said.
The man was not injured in the incident, which occurred about 12:30 p.m. in the 400 block of Lost Canyons Drive in Simi Valley, authorities said. A Ventura County sheriff's helicopter rescued the man, said Simi Valley police Lt. Greg Riegert.
Riegert said the man told rescuers he lost his footing and then slipped down an embankment. The man, whose name was not released, grabbed onto a tree on the way down to keep from falling into a ravine.
The hiker used his cell phone to call for help, Riegert said, but was unable to give his exact position. Rescuers pinpointed it by using a GPS signal from the man's phone.
