More from Crime on the Streets
When Gurmohinder Singh arrived in Camarillo almost 19 years ago, he left his young family behind in India to pursue his American dream to one day own a business.
He joined his cousins, Nirmal and Kulwinder Singh, in Camarillo, where the three men worked long hours at various convenience stores.
Eventually, the three men saved enough money and opened their own convenience store in Camarillo and created their own partnership, GNK Inc. With four convenience stores and meat and produce markets throughout Ventura County and his wife and two grown children by his side, Gurmohinder Singh continued to work hard to maintain the business, family members said.
"He was very happy," Nirmal Singh said. "He wanted to see GNK' everywhere. He wanted to open at least 10 stores, and he was working hard for that every day. It was his dream."
That dream, however, was cut short when Gurmohinder Singh was fatally shot Saturday morning in front of a US Bank branch in Oxnard. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy conducted Sunday revealed he died of gunshot wounds to the chest, said Ventura County Deputy Medical Examiner Michael Tellez.
Oxnard Police officials said the 55-year-old Oxnard resident left the US Bank branch at the 2300 block of North Oxnard Boulevard shortly before 9:30 a.m. when he was confronted by a man with a handgun.
According to police, the man, described as in his 20s, immediately shot Singh and took the money that was still in his hands.
The assailant left the area on foot and led Oxnard and Hueneme Police and the Ventura County Sheriff's Department on a manhunt for several hours on Saturday. No one was arrested, and detectives continued their investigation on Sunday, said Oxnard Police spokesman David Keith.
Oxnard Police officials did not confirm how much money the assailant took, but Singh's family members said the amount was probably "significant."
An image obtained from a security camera shows the man in pursuit was wearing blue jeans, a distinctive shirt that was blue on one half and red on the other, and a blue and red baseball cap, Oxnard Police officials said.
On Sunday, Gurmohinder Singh's son, 24-year-old Jagdeep, was surrounded by more than 20 men — relatives and close family friends — in the living room of the Singhs' two-story home on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
Meanwhile, female family members and friends tried to comfort Gurmohinder Singh's wife, Manjit Kaur, in another room, a custom in the Sikh community, Nirmal Singh said.
Jagdeep Singh recalled the last time he spoke to his father.
"He asked me (Saturday morning) what I was going to do, and I told him I was going to get a haircut," Jagdeep Singh said. "He told me he was going to the bank and would be back in 10 minutes."
It was customary for Gurmohinder Singh to take several trips to the bank throughout the week, and his family became concerned when he did not immediately return home.
Several family members went to the bank, which by then was blocked off by investigators. Gurmohinder Singh's Mercedes-Benz was still in the parking lot.
On Sunday, Gurmohinder Singh's family and friends spoke about the hard-working, devoted family man, whose nickname was "Doctor," because in India he was a registered medical practitioner, they said.
They held a picture of a smiling Gurmohinder Singh and his daughter, Rajdeep Kaur, during her recent graduation from Pacifica High School.
Nirmal Singh said his cousin not only was devoted to his work and family but also was a deeply religious man who readily helped others in need.
While supporting his own family, Gurmohinder Singh would send money to India, where his brother and elderly mother still live. He was training his son to eventually take over part of the family business.
A day after losing his father, a distraught Jagdeep Singh asked the community to call police with any information on the case.
"He was the greatest person," Jagdeep Singh said of his father as he tried to fight back tears. "He never raised his voice on anyone. He was the best dad."
Police ask that anyone with information about the slaying call Detective Michael Young at 385-7606 or leave a message on the Violent Crimes Hotline at 982-7070.

A man was murdered, and a family is grieving. If he's Mexican you can then start talking about illegal immigration and whatnot. We don't know ANYTHING until this person is caught and brought to justice. From the picture that was posted yesterday (not sure why it isn't posted today), it looks as though he could be white or latino. Definately light skin tone.

A senseless act committed by an obviously insane individual. Go somewhere else to rant about how much batter Camarillo is then Oxnard. Even though you won't believe it, Oxnard happens to be home to many decent law abiding people that are just as passionate about keeping their commnunity safe.

My condolences to the Singh family. I speculate that this must have been someone that knew that Mr. Singh had some money to deposit/withdraw that day (i.e., someone that knew him or knew of his routine trips to the bank). Otherwise, why be so stupid as to arbitrarily hold up and shoot the next person that walks out of the bank at that time of the morning on a Saturday? Hope they catch the idiot that did this.
Also, he must live close by to vanish so quickly.

We stayed with mama-ji in 2003. He was so pleased to see us and went out of his way to make our stay with them a happy one. He was so kind to us and wanted to take us everywhere and show us all of the sights. He was so proud of his shops, he worked so hard for them. and I am so upset by what has happened to him.
He moved to America for a better life, not this. I still don't understand how there are such bastards living out there who would do such a thing.
We last saw him this time last year for my cousin's wedding in Canada. He was so happy to see everyone when we opened the door, the smiles on everyones faces is a precious memory. I keep thinking if only the wedding was this year and he would be in Canada and this would never of happened.
Rajdeep asked mamjiji to get her a Loui Vuitton purse, he asked us to help him. And we all laughed so much when we went into the shop and saw the ridiculous prices. We told him not to get it, but he would of got it because thats just the kind of man he was.
RIP, we love you and miss you XXX

Camdad – “So very sad. He owned businesses in Camarillo, but live in Oxnard? Banked in Oxnard? Obviously a huge mistake.”
And then you go on to say, “I never said they couldn't”
No, you never said they couldn’t – was this permission given, who are you? Who do you think you are?
And unfortunately the way things are going – you may one day find yourself regretting your choice of location to live, and your choice of words – I pray that this is not the case.
I am very glad that this has not happened in Camarillo.
You go on with rambling to dissuade the conversation because someone called you on it, by adding more fable to your comments.
At this point I think you owe an apology to the community, if you have any class, you will.
Further, and foremost ask the Singh family to forgive you for your foolish comment. They are grieving and your speaking foolishness. This is sick!
Your comment was absolutely out of line – You should be ashamed.
PJ - Yes there are many decent upstanding law-abiding educated Latinos in Oxnard, and I am proud of this. I am Latina – and I sure do not allow myself to get pulled into this stereotypical sigma. This thought is for the uneducated mud slingers attacking others for their choices and for whom they are.

Camdad101, It is not your place to tell others how to communicate on this thread. If people feel like posting condolences and whatnot, by all means leave them alone. In all actuality and seriously speaking, I know that your trying to make a point. And for the most part they tend to be very objective. I can respect that. Always have. But, yes there is a "but". But there are parts of your statements that make you appear to be bigoted and coldhearted. I honestly don't care two sh*ts about what people think, but you need to be a little more respectful as to whom your talking to. You're not special because you live 4 miles to the east of Oxnard. You may think you are, but you're not. And you obviously still have tons of growing up to do in the "tact" department.

opns and Latina_805 you should take a clue and be the class person that high_society has shown for her remarks on here. She has explained what needs to be done. Your doing exactly what needs to be stopped. Quit making yourself out to be the victim all the time. It is usually those who are quick to jump and defend that are the core problems. What happened to this man is a horrible horrible thing. If a white man would have done this you wouldn't see me coming to his defense for all the tea in China. What is happening in Oxnard is getting worse, so who ever is the Majority and we know who that is, needs to stand up. Have meetings, discuss the problems going on and parents need to take part in their kids life right away. Kids don't just "go bad" there is a pattern and it grows bigger and bigger. Unfortunately this poor man paid the price for being a good upstanding man in the community and died at the hands of someone who obviously wasn't. Until all get angry enough to get out there and do something about it, it will continue and more and more of this is going to go on. I feel very bad for this man's family.

This incident is heartbreaking and my deepest sympathies go out to the entire Singh family. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
Camdad,I'm glad you are happy living in Camarillo. My sister lives in Camarillo and it's a lovely place. It is not Nirvana, it's not crime free and it's not immune from this type of event. When you question this good man's choices to live and bank in Oxnard you in essence place blame on him for placing himself in harm's way, which is completely ridiculous. It wasn't that long ago that a mother was killed in her home in the Santa Rosa valley due to a random act of violence. Would you question her choice to live where she did? I doubt it. He is as much an innocent victim as she was, regardless of where the crime was committed.
And by the way, I think this is a totally appropriate forum for those of us who care about this man, his family and our community to offer heartfelt sympathy. We all mourn this tragic and completely senseless loss, whether we live in Oxnard, Ventura or Camarillo.

whatever _ I don't know what the h-ll your talking about.. My comment was address to camdad, had you read his remark it was uncalled for. A family is mourning the death of a good man, and he makes a comment why this man banked in Oxnard? More crimes are commited by Latinos in Oxnard, because in Oxnard there are mainly Latinos who live here. I am in no way standing up for latino murderers, gang bangers, thieves but I do not appreciate people speaking less of my race. My family are hard working people who have worked in agriculture for over 35 yrs who are good people just like Mr. Singh. They should be respected and not questioned 'why bank in Oxnard'. This is our HOME.

opns and Latina_805, I don't think 99% of us on this thread "misread" what you wrote. I think you explained and expressed yourself properly. It's that 1% that loves to twist and miscontrue, for the sake of stirring the pot. It's sad that a man has lost his life in all of this, and people still feel the need to stand on their soapbox.
Posted by getreal on August 18, 2008 at 4:23 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Latina in CAMDAD's defense, what he is referring to is yes, more crimes are commited by Latinos and not just because Oxnard has more of them. Camarillo for instance has far, far, FAR less crime committed which implies that since it is predomin. white, there are fewer crimes. It has been proven numerous time that Latinos commit more crimes than another other race period no matter what city you are in. Let him be proud of his city as you are of yours. Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. He is not ripping you apart for yours and you should do the same. Respect him like you are asking him to do.
Posted by whatever on August 18, 2008 at 4:26 p.m. (Suggest removal)
you say They should be respected and not questioned, why not question?? I question any and everyone. Doesn't matter who you are or what color, if you are out there doing bad things I sure am going to question and you can not lump all one race together and say leave them alone. You don't understand, if there are more in one race committing crimes that indeed needs to be addressed. If there is so much crime in one area, what do you think that is saying to everyone? It is sad you just don't get it. If you want people or someone to stop doing something bad, you have to address it and those who are committing the crimes. And what makes you think that white people as a whole is not condemned We are, have you not heard the phrases about whites in general? We still get accused for the sins of people who had slavery way before our time, I wasn't involved but if you follow the news you would think all whites of today are to blame still. That's the way life goes. Get over yourself and if you want to be a good citizen then quit griping when certain things are pointed out. Facts are facts indeed and why don't you question why Oxnard IS all Hispanic? That would say to me that there is no assimilation going on there. Whose fault would that be?

"It has been proven numerous time that Latinos commit more crimes than another other race period no matter what city you are in"
You're not serious are you? You stand behind what you just wrote? You, my friend, are a poor excuse for a human being. How dare you lump an entire race of people into a catagory such as this?
I challange you to PROVE to me that what you wrote is 100% accurate. Just curious as to where you got your information from.

How very sad that this man's tragic death is being used as an excuse for such ugly, racist remarks. While the majority of Oxnard residents may be Hispanic, they do not account for ALL of Oxnard as I and many other non-Hispanic Oxnard dwellers could attest. Furthermore most of my Hispanic neighbors, friends and customers in Oxnard are the loveliest most wonderful people you could ever know and I am sad to see vicious comments bandied about with such disregard for the feelings of the vast majority of law abiding Hispanic residents in Oxnard and throughout the area.
I have lived in Oxnard for the last 24 years after having been born and raised in Ventura. The only time I was ever witness to criminal activity was when I lived in Ventura when my best friend was raped by an intruder in her home in a nice middle class neighborhood in East Ventura. Oh and the crime was committed by a Caucasian man.
Some of the comments here have to be the sorriest reflection of humanity I have seen in a long time.

Hispanics commit violent crimes at roughly three times the white rate, and Asians commit violent crimes at about one quarter the white rate.
Taken from the color of crime

"Do you think that maybe people are not coming forward because they are scared of getting deported?"
So, who just happened to be driving or walking by that is an illegal immigrant.
"We need to hold an emergency meeting with surrounding neighborhoods and assure them they won't get deported"
LMAO!!! How do you know ANY of these people that live in this area are illegal????
Some of you clearly have gone off the deep end.
I'm outta here.

ok, one last time...
high_society, Ok, excuse my abruptness and seemingly frusrated response. Yes, I do remember that census issue from a while back, and I agree that it was a big problem for us as a nation, a community. These people were not counted, for obvious reasons. But you can't think that the people that may have seen this person, lived by this person, or heard about this horrible tragedy are ALL illegal. We need information to help solve this horrific crime, and all you can do is think about who may be illegal? C'mon, I know your not as simplistic as that.

high_society I read your post and today you are so right on. If the Hispanic community would listen and make sure they report it just might make crime a little less. I am still an advocate for stopping the illegal problem in the whole US, I think when they are given sanctuary cities and you still have so much crime, that keeping the towns as sanctuary cities is not helping at all. I have heard the reasoning is that they want them to feel free to come forward about crimes, well, I don't think it is helping. Someone somewhere knows this man and knows where he is. I shutter to think if he has made it to Mexico already. The victims family will need justice. He was a minority here and he deserves justice, he lost his life in a cold and callous way. It will take more people like you to make a dent in the damage that is being done. People need to really be wide awake now and realize that no one is safe anywhere at any time.

Why don't you people say if SOMEONE saw the crime or know anything to please come foward and help out. Why do you people have to assume this crime happened in plain view of a bunch of illegal immigrants and then just ran away without helping? Truly sickening how people are attempting to justify their racist remarks and hide them behind a horrible crime that, for all we know, could of been commited by a race other than Mexican decent, and have been witnessed by a WHITE person.
You people are sickening, ignorant and should apologize to this late gentleman's friends and family for implying such.

"How can I be racist if my parents are from Mexico?" Easy, you can be. It's that simple. Just because your parents are from Mexico doesn't mean a thing. You have your views.
So, what "other possibilities" do you think are possible?
I am also from Mexican decent, and have very strong views on illegal immigration. And some of my friends don't agree 100% either. This is a huge problem, and I don't claim to have any answers for it. I would want it to stop as well, it affects all of us. We agree there, I assume.
I know that you were referring to the witnesses. Were there any? Were you there? Are you a witness? Are you documented? Are your parents documented? Don't like the drilling, doesn't feel good does it?
We dont know WHO saw this, of anyone. So leave it alone and let the cops do their work. And if someone did see it, let's hope they come foward and help, regardless of race.
Posted by pjlove10 on August 18, 2008 at 6:55 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Let me make this clear to you, I am 100% against illegal immigration, on all levels, no matter from where, who, or what. Do you understand? ok..
I think we agree on that, I'm assuming here.
Do you really think that a bunch of illegal aliens are going to come to a meeting and discuss the wareabouts or give information on this crime? Be more realistic here. If they are illegal, they are not going anywhere to discuss anything. I agree with you on this point, that the community as a whole needs to be better informed when things like this happen. Show up to the next city counsel meeting and make recommendations as to how to proceed. Maybe a mass mailer, or some type of recorded call in different languages so people of DIFFERENT ethnicities can listen to what happened and suggest a way to help or come foward to help with information IF they know or saw something.
I think we would agree on this.
Now, let's not stray too far from the point of this entire story, let's hope that SOMEONE come's foward with something to help catch this lunatic.

high_society, For the most part I feel we agree. I will apologize to you if I "jumped" all over you. That wasn't the intention, nor is it my style so to speak. It's a fine balance of healthy exchange on a certian topic and trying to not offend, especially with a sensitive story such as this. I drove by the scene on Saturday to do some shopping, and I realized how sad and depressing something like this can happen, in this town or any other for that matter. I wish I had all the answers but I don't. I do think it's at least refreshing that so many people are at least offering or suggesting some type of change.

Camdad-I have to totally disagree with your posts this time. As much as I know you love Camarillo and the great quality of life it has to offer please keep in mind that you do not live in a glass bubble. Let me give you an example, and I do not mean to offend anyone. Let's look at Mrs. Fayed. She too lived in your great neighborhood and unfortunately her life was taken in a violent act. This happened in another affluent city with high tech cameras and I am sure, a heavy police presence. However, no matter how much money she did or did not have, tragedy could not elude her. So, unless you never leave your front door, in America we always have to be ever vigilant of our surroundings, no matter where you live.

Wow! Illegal immigration always sneaks right into these comments, doesn't it? Regardless of where the scum came from, it needs to be caught and eliminated. Eradication works so good when people don't have their "I don't want to get involved" attitudes and "codes of silence". Come on and help clean this area of the scum, okay? I surely would, if I had seen what had happened.

vae4usc: maybe that is why the FBI is now involved. To those who say it's hispanic and it's Oxnard, remember: crime goes where the money is. I was once held up in Long Beach at gunpoint and I have had my car burglarized in Yorba Linda. I had a bus driver relate this story to me this morning because she saw me use the ATM! For pete's sake, using the ATM won't necessarily get you killed - folks, don't give in to some kind of moronic hysteria! And don't think nothing can happen to you in Ventura as some have stated in comments to an earlier news item. That is patently stupid - have you ever heard of a little neighborhood on the west side of Ventura? Point being, crime is present. I don't need a damned bus driver presenting me with bad news just 'cause I used an ATM at the Pacific View Mall if she cannot process the information herself.

Hey Cam vs Oxnard posters,
Try this one on…
Remember John Marmo? He was also a “camdad” and was brutally gunned down on his doorstep IN CAMARILLO. However, before this happened he reported more than 1 attempt on his life in the form of pipe bombs taped to his exhaust pipe. But none of these previous incidents were taken seriously – either by Camarillo or the Navy, or both.
Crime happens everywhere, but in cities that are “known” for being safe – Camarillo, Westlake, TO, etc, that image is HUGE for them. Maybe a burglary is deemed a theft, or rape is considered a domestic issue, or an attempted murder is just mischievous behavior by an angry ex-wife. The crime stats look good, the image is intact, everyone is happy.
I think if John Marmo lived in Oxnard, he would still be alive. At least in Oxnard, I’m confident the people who were supposed to protect him would have done it.

Quit arguing and instead be sad for the family that is suffering this tragic loss. If the thief had only wanted the money, why shoot to kill as well? There is always more to the story and in this situation, we may never know the rest. The guy who committed this crime may not be a local, he could be from Camarillo! Until he is caught, nobody will know! It is terribly sad that he killed this innocent, hard working and productive man. I agree with those that say he must have known Singh's banking habits. I COULD have been his lucky day that he picked a man who was carrying a lot of money but more likely, he knew him and knew he would have a good amount of cash. He of course had to kill him so not to get caught because Singh probably knew him. Hope they catch the guy!

Hey Camdad - Yesterday - I hope i didn't offend you by my emotions, and ugly accusations. Sorry. Todays another day.
Also, I ask the community and everyone who is reading and commenting, if we could all take some time and pray. Yes Pray. Since we all come from different faiths or whatever, lets all join in praying like this:
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
((I don't mean to turn this into a .....)) but our community needs prayers. We all need to take time from our lives, as we do on these keyboards -and pray too. Copy and paste and print, and put it somewhere as a daily reminder. I do mean to insinuate that you don't. (I believe you all know what i mean.
Respectfully yours.

My condolences to the Singh family on the tragic loss of a good man. Everyone is saddened by this senseless crime, but as we all know too well, this is not the first nor will it be the last murder that we will have to read about in the VC Star.
We cannot change what has happened to Mr. Singh, but perhaps we can help put away more of these sociopaths in the future by convincing private parties, property owners, security companies and everyone owning surveillance cameras, to spend a little more for quality cameras, lenses and recorders. In this era of high tech, digital and High Def. camera systems there is no excuse to have a system where someone's face is unrecognizable. What's the point? How many times have we seen photos or videos of robberies on the news where the surveillance images are nothing but blurs. Had this murderer's face been recognizable, the next picture of him would most likely be that of his mug shot.
I'm not a salesman for security systems but it seems a waste to have a system that will only show you the colors of a hat and shirt that we're most likely disposed of minutes later.
