Phoenix can be hub for explorations
Phoenix is close to scenic and historic attractions that are accessible by day trips.
One of the closest and most popular is Sedona, a two-hour drive leading to towering red sandstone cliffs that evoke romantic visions of the Old West.
The red rocks provide a backdrop for boutiques and galleries featuring Native American and Southwestern arts and crafts.
Prescott, founded after the discovery of gold in 1863, was the first permanent capital of the Arizona Territory. Also a two-hour drive, it is home to the Sharlot Hall Museum complex, the first territorial governor's mansion, the 1857 John C. Fremont House and the restored 100-year-old Bashford House.
Flagstaff is the home of Northern Arizona University and Lowell Observatory, from which the Pluto, which has since been demoted from planet status, was discovered in 1930. The University offers an extensive exhibit of Native American as well. Skiing at Arizona Snowball in the San Francisco Peaks also is nearby.
