CAMARILLO UMC CELEBRATES WORLD MUSIC SUNDAY AUG. 31

World Music Sunday will be celebrated at the Camarillo United Methodist church when an ensemble group performs a rich collection of worship music taken from The Faith We Sing Sunday, Aug. 31, at both morning services.

The services are at 9 and 10:30 a.m. and are open to the public.

Selections for the morning will include: African American spirituals, music from the Taize region of France and the Iona community of Scotland, plus pieces from Hawaii and Africa. The ensemble of church members will sing in a variety of languages and be accompanied by instrumentalists.

Music from the Taize (pronounced Tah záy) region is known for its introspective qualities. As the verses repeat, singers and listeners become one with the music through repetition, Dr. Lynn Decker-Mahin, music director, said. In contrast, music from the Iona (pronounced eye óh nah) region is written with the goal of drawing singers and listeners outward to a call to service.

As we celebrate our finest athletes round the globe (Olympics), this is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the many languages and styles in which we worship God around the world, Dr. Decker-Mahin said.

For information, please call the church office at 805-482-4312 or go on the web site, www.cam-umc.org. The church is located at 291 Anacapa Dr., north of Las Posas road. Infrared hearing sets and large print bulletins are available.
