Williams named AD at Buena
It's apparent that coaching basketball and running the athletic department go hand and hand at Buena High.
Craig Williams, the boys' basketball coach for the Bulldogs the past seven years, has been named this week as the school's new athletic director.
He follows in the footsteps of Joe Vaughan, who forged a considerable legacy as the Buena girls' basketball coach and athletic director before retiring after the 2006-2007 season.
For Williams, the timing was right.
"I thought about it after Joe left last year, but it just wasn't the right time for me," said Williams, who is presently in Hawaii on vacation. "Now it feels right. I just hope to do my part to keep this athletic department at a high level."
Williams, 51, is certainly a home-grown choice. He is a Buena High graduate who has spent the last 18 years as a teacher/coach.
He said it's his job to help out the Buena coaches.
"I want to make things easier for them," said Williams, also a graduate of the University of Redlands. "It's scheduling, arranging transportation, doing all the paperwork that goes with athletics."
Williams replaces Tina Wright, who took over for Vaughan last summer. Principal Kyunghae Schwartz was not available for comment on Thursday.
