Morning Report: 5 teens survive crash into ravine, driver arrested

Police and Fire: Five Ventura teens escaped with minor injuries late Sunday night when the car they were riding in crashed into a deep ravine, police said.

Tyler Miskiewicz, 18, was driving the sedan northbound on Kalorama Drive north of Buena Vista Street about 11:20 p.m. when he struck a parked truck on the southbound side of the street, careened across the roadway and went about 150 feet down an embankment and into a ravine, Ventura police reported in a prepared statement this morning.

Miskiewicz and his four passengers, aged 17 to 19, were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

All five of the teens were wearing seatbelts, which "most likely prevented major injuries or death," police said.

All of the teens in the car had allegedly been drinking alcohol, police said.

Miskiewicz was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, police said. He was booked into Ventura County Jail.

Bummer, glad no one was seriously hurt. Yep Pog, he can kiss is his license goodybe for a long time!

I was in bed and heard this happen. Lots of tire squeals and engine revving, crash!, crunch!, crunch!, as the car tumbled down the ravine to land upside down, wedged in between the banks of the little creek at the bottom. People from the neighborhood gathered on the edge of the ravine and were relieved to hear that five people got out of the car with only minor injuries.

Funny how the kids were responsible enough to all be wearing seat belts (which is sometimes awkward with five people in a smallish sedan but they did it anyway) but silly enough to be riding around with a drunk driver.

Nothing "silly" about diving around drunk, I'm sorry, but this is just plain STUPID. They could of killed someone, or themselves... Then we would all be posting about "our sympathies" and whatnot. Take all of thier licences away for following along as well.

Glad they are okay.

Thank God these kids survived their stupidity this time. Lesson learned, hopefully.

Pogmothoin,

I assume your comment is a poor joke regarding the Stiller film. However funny it seems and however over-extended the PC arena may seem, I am deeply offended by your statement. Don't lump individuals with disabilities in a category by classification with irresponsible children who DRINK AND DRIVE! The mentally and physically retarded did not choose to have disabilities. Those kids got in the car drunk. I do not disagree with the general use of the word "retarded" in a proper syntax. However the liberal use of "retard/retarded" as a derogatory label is offensive on so many levels.

I have been a silent "watcher" of these boards for about a year or two. I always wondered what issue would push me to post. I guess I found it.

Posted by MsPross on August 11, 2008 at 8:49 a.m. (Suggest removal)

An addendum;

I should have asked politely that one would respectfully not "lump individuals with disabilities in a category ..." instead of demanding action from you.

My apologies, Pogmothoin. In the future, would you please refrain from grouping individuals with disabilities with irresponsibility and stupidity?

Good morning JuniorMafia-NY. Glad to meet you. =]

Posted by pjlove10 on August 11, 2008 at 8:51 a.m. (Suggest removal)

MsPross, C'mon... your stretching it. It's very typical for you PCer's to come out and jab at something YOU feel makes you uncomfortable. Continue to be a "silent watcher" by all means. "Pogmothoin" was simply equating the very act of driving drunk as possessing little intellegence. And because no one was seriuously hurt, a little humor in this case in warranted. I can also see how it may offend, somewhat. But I don't think that was the intent.

Guessed right, juniormafia

Posted by MsPross on August 11, 2008 at 8:58 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Posted by rebel123 on August 11, 2008 at 9:08 a.m. (Suggest removal)

OK, here we go again. With regard to slinging the word "retarded" around to describe people who do stupid as well as illegal things, it insults those who are indeed mentally disabled/challenged. It hurts their feelings and makes them sad. If that is what you need to do in order to feel empowered, then I feel very sorry for you. Surely you can find a better word to describe stupid actions that does not deride innocent people who are simply looking to be treated with dignity and respect. The continued insistance that it is taking PC too far is wrong. There's a reason for people to use POLITE language. In this case, it offends those who do not choose to be mentally challenged yet they become the brunt of jokes. Do yourselves a favor and stop using the word "retarded". It is hurtful and it is not your place to suggest those it hurts and dehumanizes should just get over it. Grow up.

I agree with pjlove10, people who are the regular commnentors have recognized THOSE that are rude, racist, cruel, etc.

By no means do I intentionally offend someone due to their disability and/or illness.

Posted by rebel123 on August 11, 2008 at 9:40 a.m. (Suggest removal)

OK, Pog. Go ahead. You don't get it. Simple matter of not hurting feelings and making someone sad, but you go ahead. Use the word you like regardless. Your ignorance is surpassed only by your insensitivity.

The word has obviously hit a nerve...it was just reported in this gloriuos newspaper that people are protesting the word being used in a movie called Tropic Thunder....The various organizations the represent those who are mentally disabled/challenged want to boycott the movie because of the use of the word in a derogatory manner...

Posted by sunnbear on August 11, 2008 at 9:42 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Fun is fun and I agree that PC has gotten out of hand, but "retard" or "retarded" goes just a bit far. When I witness an idiotic person, doing an idiotic thing, I just say, "That person is so Irish!" or "What a dumb Mc!" So as not to offend any intelligent people.

PsPross, that subject had aver 50 posting about the word "retard" and none was yours, this is a completely different subject, you overslept on defending the mentally challenged. As these kids, I agree with viva ventucky, how weird these 5 kids on a sedan all wore seatbelts. I susally dont when Im in the back seat because it gets too crouwded on a Sedan. And Im also sure that the parents will help this kid out. I remember my mother once told me that if the cops ever woke her up in the middle of the night for doing something stupid, that she would go back to sleep and let me learn my lesson. Hope these parents do the same.

This post is getting outta hand. Wait, I may have offended someone that may only have one hand.

I don't take the word 'retard' lightly either. But I don't think "Pog" was being intentially mean here. I think some of you are taking this way too far. Take two George Carlin albums and call me in the morning.

It isn't funny if you are a mentally challenge person or the parents of a child who comes home daily and has been the brunt of "retard" jokes or has sat by and heard others toss that word around with abandon. The lack of malice in using it does not mitigate the reality of its impact. Good intend does not make it ok to hurt someones feelings. Nice people don't do that. If it impinges on your fun, perhaps you need a better vocabulary so you can find a word to use that doesn't cause pain to a group of people who are sick and tired of being the brunt of jokes.

As to the story, I have to say that if anyone thinks having a license revoked will stop a person from driving they are sadly mistaken.

You'd be shocked to realize just how many people you're sharing the road with have had their license suspended or revoked, if they even had one in the first place. These sort of people figure they are masters of the road and couldn't care less about what they may wreak upon others.

Posted by Relvd98 on August 11, 2008 at 11:02 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I agree with you Robert. We, motorists have no idea with whom we are sharing the road with. So, just be extra cautious not only for yourself, but others who are not considerate for human life.

missing805.... you need to come off your high horse... Why don't you go back and read my frist posting on this article.... how do you come up with "high selfesteem" with someone using the word RETARD/RETARDED and thinking it is absolutely acceptable? My comment was directed to those that think it is acceptable to use the word "retard/retarded" whether they be mentally disabled or acting stupid. Sensitivity is clearly an issue that is not being practiced here. So before you jump on someone for being "mean and offensive" and "discriminating" why don't you take a good long look in the mirror sweetheart. Oh and stop reading what you want to read on here.

missing805;
I find your post offensive equating discrimination with mean. I've been mean all my life and never discriminated, please don't lump these groups together.
Thank you.

The driver and his friends did an incredibly stupid thing and lived. This could so easily have ended up being another story about teen driving deaths, and their friends could be missing them when school starts.
Think they learned a lesson? Don't drive with Tyler Miskiewicz, but everybody else is ok is what they'll take away from this I bet.

Hmmmm, when I drive a diesel truck, I use an engine retarder. I get to work late, I'm tardy.

I wasn't able to read over all the comments...sorry...but one of my biggest issues in this society is the acceptence of drunk drivers (one of, I am sure I have many others)

I bet everyone can tell a story of how a drunk driver has affected their life or a loved ones life. Nothing good ever comes from drinking a driving.

They need to make the penalties much stiffer for this offense, personally...I would like to see attempted murder.

These kids are d*mn lucky they weren't seriously injured or killed!

It doesn't matter how many kids are killed because of drunk driving; there will always be kids who roll the dice and think that nothing will happen to them.

When my kids are older my message to them will be that they will never get in trouble for calling us for a ride because they've been drinking or because the friend driver has been drinking. I'd rather get that call than a call from the morgue.

Posted by bugmenot on August 11, 2008 at 12:37 p.m. (Suggest removal)

rebel123, there were about 4-5 posts using the words moron and idiot to describe these youths.

You need to let those posters know how insensitive they are being. They need to be educated as to the origins of the words and how words can be used to hurt people. Enlighten us. The word idiot is especially insensitive as it is the greatest degree of intellectual disability.

Idiot indicated the greatest degree of intellectual disability, where the mental age is two years or less, and the person cannot guard himself or herself against common physical dangers. The term was gradually replaced by the term profound mental retardation.

Moron was defined by the American Association for the Study of the Feeble-minded in 1910, following work by Henry H. Goddard, as the term for an adult with a mental age between eight and twelve.

"from what I understand, America can't help them because of the UN and Russia being one of the major players won't vote for it...I may be wrong, but that is the way I understood it."

The UN has been a social club for dictators, oppressive theocracies and single-party states for ages.

However, NATO could do something if they weren't a bunch of gutless wonders. The nations of Western Europe are becoming "main-lined" on Russian oil and gas, and are afraid to upset their "sugar daddy". If they don't stand up now, they may as well bend over because Russia will know they've got them by the "you know whats".

Remember, comrade Putin was a member of the KGB, and among his duties was crushing political dissent. He has remembered his lessons well, as illustrated by what has occurred to any and all critical opposition in Russia. Murdered reporters, imprisoned political opponents and assassinated former colleagues do not make for a "friend of the West".

Geez, what is it with people... The topic isn't about offending those with downs syndrome, who, interestingly enough, aren't even reading this article. This isn't about defending the feelings of all mankind, this discussion should be about thanking god that 5 kids are okay. I don't know why people need to get so off subject when they get offended. Let's argue about nothing for 5 useless minutes...sounds like a good idea. How about instead of proofreading everyone's comments to see what's offensive, why don't you just thank god your kid isn't laying in a ravine somewhere. uh oh i said god...let's get offended...

"Thanks for the info.

Hasn't the UN had issues in the past with hiding oil for food money and corrupt people?

Why is the US still a part of it?"

The issues the UN have had are legendary. The involvement of Secretary General Kofi Annan's son in the "Oil for Food" program is just one of the more recent and memorable ones.

The US has been involved with the UN from the outset, it being a replacement for the League of Nations which we had a hand in establishing at the end of the First World War. In both institutions, among the primary purposes was the promotion of the causes of justice and freedom. Something long since forgotten in the UN, when our supposed Soviet "ally" decided that they wanted to keep the peoples of Eastern Europe under their thumb. Something the current Russian leadership seems awfully interested in resurrecting.

As for why we continue, it's a hard argument to make on either side. Heaven knows the UN would be hurting if we were to withdraw. The USA is the single largest contributor to the UN, accounting for approximately 22% of their regular budget and 27% of the peacekeeping budget, and it often seems we're "throwing money down a rat-hole". We could save an assessment of some $1.7 billion (as of 2005). However, one can argue that we'd be hard pressed to achieve communication with a number of nations, or carry out a number of vital projects, if we didn't have the UN as a conduit.

Like most things, there are no easy answers. Sacrificing our friends and allies because the UN doesn't want to do something certainly isn't one of them.

Wow, reading this arguement about use of the word "retard" was amazingly boring. Usually arguments in here are interesting!

I worked with special needs people for many years and I would never use that word to describe someone with a true disability. Interestingly enough though is that it is a TRUE diagnosis to be mentally retarded. More and more people now use the word "delayed" but if you have worked with someone who falls under the legally retarded definition, you know there is no delay about it, their brain will never function beyond a certain level.

Anyways, the word retarded applies to people who are of normal intelligence (which we assume these kids to be) but who still do stupid things. For those of you that are offended - why are you upset about it? You can't control what other people think and express and there is no real harm in that word. It's silly to get mad over such a small thing, it really IS taking the PC thing way too far! Are we all so fragile that we cannot handle that word, which is part of OUR language, used? SILLY SILLY SILLY!

MsPross , I totally agree with your comment. If someone has a mentally challenged child and someone uses that word I would be very offended. Not saying you do ,its an example. Stupidity is a better word or even ignorant. Just like when someone wishes rape on someone in prison yet they dont condone it on the streets. Rape is very serious. No one should wish that. Maybe a good butt kicking but not rape , one day these men that rape in prison will be walking the streets, hopefully not near our children and get the urge.
pjlove10 ,it may not have been intentional or thought out but to some people its very offensive. We should all just remember that. Perhaps you didn't mean it the way others take it but we have to be careful of the words we use.
rebel123 ,Great Comment,very intelligently put.

Thankfully no one was hurt, and thankfully they all had their seat belts on.

Tyler is 18 years old he just graduated he is not the smartest but does that give you any reason to sit there and talk crap? i am very hurt at the city i live in that you all are pulling this. i am soooo thankful that none of my friends were hurt. one of them broke their collar bone bet you didnt know that. another has scrattches all over her face. tyler had to get stitches in his head. i can not stop thinking about what i would do if the 5 of them were not alive rite now. i am so mad at tyler and he will be in trouble i pray to god he dosent have to go to jail. he is very lucky that no one was killed, and you all need to realise that hes just a kid and he did learn his mistake they all did... but none of you would know because none of you know them!!

Lindsay - well most of the posters here don't know Tyler but unfortunately we read too many stories about kids just like him. Kids who make the very wrong decision to drink and drive. Not to mention that at their ages they shouldn't be drinking at all.

It's good that you're mad at him and hopefully you won't ever make the same bad decision that he did to drink and drive. Hopefully he and his passengers have also learned their lesson.

We were all young once and everyone makes mistakes. Sadly, too many times it takes the death of someone before lessons are learned. I hope it doesn't take a death for you and your friends to learn this lesson.

And if your friends knew that he had been drinking and still got in the car with him...then they should realize that they are fully to blame for any injuries that they suffered.

Spread the word Lindsay...don't drink and drive!

Lindsay, I agree that some comments here have been unnecessarily judgmental and there is no reason for people to be name-calling, but please understand many of us either have teenagers of our own, or have known teenagers who have been involved in similar accidents. Emotions run so high with a story like this because they scare us. The up and coming generation is so precious to us, we do get upset when they make bad decisions and put themselves and others in danger. I'm sorry that some of the comments get out of hand but many of them are truly coming from caring, even if it may not seem like it.

I'm glad your friends will be okay. I pray for their speedy recovery, and that everyone (teenagers and adults alike) can learn from what happened.

Yes. What happened here could of injured or killed innocent people. We all know that and every kid in this car has heard this in school their entire lives. There are some of us that carry an anger of a loved one lost to a drunk driver. We know this is drinking and driving is very wrong. We also know that everyone makes bad choices and there is usually a consequence for every bad choice. These are very important words and we must repeat them to our young people regularly.

The young people in this car made bad choices and they are facing their consequences. The driver of the car made a very bad choice and he will be dealing with this for years to come. Our government makes sure that every aspect of a DUI infraction is covered through fines and education. The passengers have stitches and broken bones. Along with the fear that they could of died, they learned a hard lesson.

Tyler (the driver) is a special friend to members of my family. He is a very good person. He will be paying the consequences for his actions. In the end, he is still Tyler and he is still a good person. There are others in the car that I will not mention their names due to their age and they are good people too. They all made a wrong decision that night. These kids are far from being “idiots”, being “retarded”, or being “stupid”. Your judgments remind me of my own flaws

Let’s remember that these are our kids. They are part of our great community. They need us to be forgiving and understand that times like these are scary. Yes, we need to bring them up to be good people but also loving. Doing something wrong does not shun a person from society. Help them. Raise them.

"All five of the teens were wearing seatbelts, which "most likely prevented major injuries or death," police said."
Too bad, they probably won't learn a lesson, I'm sure they were too BUZZED/DRUNK to realize what happened.”
What do you mean “too bad, they probably won’t learn a lesson”? Would you rather see five people dead or seriously injured? If they were seriously buzzed/drunk I’m sure they wouldn’t have been wearing seatbelts.

Where are all their friends coming here to tell us not to judge and how nice these kids are?”

I’ve known Tyler for thirteen years and you mean to tell me you never did anything wrong as a teenager or watched friends do anything wrong? Even though they may have had a lapse in judgment you love them the same for the person they are.
He was probably only driving due to the fact he was the “least drunk” in the car. I can take a pretty good guess at who the others were.
If as much energy was spent on things to HELP situations like this instead of posting arguments on words considered offensive, maybe we wouldn’t have to read about these events in the first place. Community Carpool for teenagers and adults alike that have been drinking, maybe? You can’t turn away and say teenagers aren’t going to drink because they are no matter if you tell them no and you don’t supply them alcohol, it’s very easy to get it. I know I’m not the only person who will say my parents didn’t care if I drank or not being underage.

And it’s not that the punishment should be harder, but most of the stories I heard in high school when my friends got pulled over while they were under the influence was that officers didn’t arrest them or even punish them but simply made them lock their keys in the car and walk home or dump out all the beer cans in the back of the vehicle. I’ve heard this story and many WORSE [trust, it can be worse than that] stories of how nothing was done and while they are my friends and I care about them it’s still disgusting to hear of stories like that about our law enforcement.

Have a good night and hopefully on your Friday morning at work firing up all your computers you won’t have a field day on this post…
