Peace-activist priest and author to speak at church

The Rev. John Dear, a Jesuit priest nominated for the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, will speak Oct. 12 at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Camarillo.

The public is invited to the free 7 p.m. event, part of the priest's national book tour for his autobiography, "A Persistent Peace: One Man's Struggle for a Nonviolent World."

Dear will share his story, read from his new book and answer questions from the audience.

The priest has been arrested more than 75 times, spent more than a year in jail and received death threats in his drive for peace.

His book tells how he went from "spoiled, wealthy frat boy" and beer-chugging contests in a Duke University fraternity to peace activism.

"A number of us have read his earlier books and we thought, Wouldn't it be wonderful to hear him speak?' So I contacted him, and he said yes," said church member Barbara Vernon of Camarillo.

The event will be held at the church at Las Posas Road and Crestview Avenue, not at the chapel and parish center on Ventura Boulevard, she said.
