Oxnard able to battle best close to home
Jennifer Lincoln quickly wiped away the crumbs of a postmatch snack.
Tucking the rest of her food in a paper bag, the setter described the experience of passing to the powerful 6-foot-2 Rachael Kidder.
"It's a little nerve wracking," Lincoln said. "I have to get them perfect for her. She needs to look her best."
A busy two days of volleyball has left little free time for Lincoln, a senior from Moorpark High. The presence of Kidder, who committed to UCLA after her sophomore year, makes it easier.
Moorpark is one of five teams participating in a two-day volleyball tournament at Oxnard High. Organized by Oxnard coach Pat Casey, the tournament features top teams from the area and state — Moorpark, Oxnard, Vista Murrieta, Santa Barbara and Orange Lutheran.
The teams' credentials from last season are impressive. Santa Barbara (7), Vista Murrieta (15) and Orange Lutheran (25) were all among the top 25 in the final California state ranking. All five teams were champions of their respective conferences except for Moorpark.
Oxnard had traveled to Hawaii the last two summers, but it was getting expensive so they decided to stay close to home.
Casey had already seen his team roll through summer league play at Moorpark High this summer, so with this tournament, he wanted his team challenged so they could have a measuring stick on where it stood and areas to improve.
"I sought after the toughest, top schools I could find," Casey said.
One of those schools, Moorpark, is buoyed by a veteran roster consisting of seven seniors and five juniors. The Musketeers are trying to break into that elite group.
"This is good," Lincoln said. "This is showing we can play with them all."
Echoed Kidder: "They're pretty good teams. We're pretty good too, though."
Moorpark went against Vista Murrieta first with the two schools splitting the initial two games.
In the next two games, Moorpark took an early lead both times and held it throughout as the Musketeers clinched the match in four games (25-20, 20-25, 25-18, 25-20).
Moorpark benefited Friday not only from the powerful kills of Kidder, but the serve of Lincoln, who had two aces in a 5-0 Moorpark run in the Musketeers' Game 1 win.
"I get a little nervous in the beginning, but once I get on a roll I just serve hard," Lincoln said.
Oxnard had a tougher time, losing its first match in four games to Santa Barbara (25-12, 17-25, 25-9, 25-19). When Oxnard fell behind early, it was unable to recover. But in Game 2, Oxnard jumped out to a 7-2 lead and featured its best play of the match.
"Santa Barbara is very good," Casey said. "They can make some teams look bad, but I felt like we didn't fight them hard enough."
The summer play is also allowing Casey to learn more about his players, and give them time to try new positions, as is the case with his outside hitter Nicole Jarvis, who is making the transition from middle blocker.
She made her presence felt with eight kills in the second game.
"For us, we can put her at middle," Casey said. "But I think it's going to help her become a better volleyball player and it will help us eventually, too, for her to move to outside, which means she now has to learn a different position. She now has to pass and play a different style of volleyball."
Moorpark and Oxnard squared off in the afternoon with the Musketeers winning in five games (25-23, 25-17, 27-29, 15-25, 22-20).
All the proceeds of the tournament, minus expenses, are being donated to the American Cancer Society, including the team fees plus whatever money the tournament brings in. The Channel Coast volleyball officials waived their fees as well.
Today's matches include Moorpark vs. Santa Barbara at 9 a.m., Vista Murrieta vs. Oxnard at 11 a.m., Orange Lutheran vs. Moorpark at 1 p.m., Vista Murrieta vs. Santa Barbara at 3 p.m. and Orange Lutheran vs. Oxnard at 5 p.m.
