Editorial: Honor Peace Pole

In a world with too much strife and suffering, it is natural and important that humans strive for peace.

That goal is symbolized in Ventura County by a new Ventura Plaza Peace Garden that will be dedicated today at 1 p.m. at Plaza Park (651 E. Main St., Ventura) as part of an annual Hiroshima and Nagasaki public vigil.

Ventura is the first city in the county to have a public Peace Garden, according to Ventura physician Bob Dodge, who heads several prominent peace organizations.

Central to the garden will be a Peace Pole, with the words, "May Peace Prevail on Earth" in eight languages — English, Spanish, Japanese, Ventureno, Arabic, Hindi, Vietnamese and Persian.

The pole is a gift of area residents who are members of Beyond War, Citizens for Peaceful Resolutions, Peace Coalition of Greater Ventura and Veterans for Peace.

We thank them and look forward to watching this garden of peace grow.

I only hope a gesture for peace won't be a substitute for actions aimed at producing it.

With stumps like jw hating everyone and everything, it's a wonder there's ever any peace.

It was a beautiful ceremony. I teared up when the son of a Hiroshima survivor read his father's horrific account of his dad's experience. And when the doves were released.

Then I came home to read about the Russians bombing Georgians.

Death coming down from the sky is so sanitized unless you're on the receiving end of it instead of the dropping side. I have trouble just shrugging it off no matter who's bombing whom--them, us, whoever.
