Morning Report: Woman killed in Camarillo car crash identified

Police and Fire: Authorities this morning identified the young woman killed in a Camarillo traffic crash Thursday night.

Brittany Rakosky, 23, of Brea was pronounced dead at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard at 11:44 p.m., said Craig Stevens, senior deputy Ventura County medical examiner.

Rakosky was making a left turn from Crestview Avenue onto Las Posas Road about 9:45 p.m. when she collided with an oncoming car, said Capt. Chris Dunn of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.

She was transported to a local hospital with a head injury. She was later pronounced dead at the hospital, Dunn said.

No other injuries were reported in the crash.

----------

Downed wires caused a small structure fire at an Oxnard home this morning, and part of a street is closed down as authorities deal with the situation, said Deborah Shane, spokeswoman for the Oxnard Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to the scene of the fire in the 700 block of H Street just before 11 a.m., Shane said.

The fire did not cause any major damage, but the 700 block of H Street was shut down because of hazards in the area.

A small power outage was also reported.

No injuries were reported.

Two people were transported by helicopter to the Oxnard airport early this morning after their sailboat ran aground on Santa Cruz island, the Coast Guard reported.

----------

Coast Guard officials received word about 3:40 a.m. that a 36-foot sailing vessel had run aground on Santa Cruz Island, about 20 miles from the coast, said Chief Aaron Ferguson of the Coast Guard’s Channel Islands Station.

It’s not clear how the boat rain aground. Both people on board were able to make their way safely to the beach.

They were later picked up by a helicopter from Coast Guard Station Los Angeles and flown to Oxnard, Ferguson said.

The coast guard this morning was working with a towing company to recover the sailboat, he said.

----------

California Highway Patrol officers chased a vehicle through Ventura about 9 p.m. Thursday, Ventura police said.

The pursuit ended near the intersection of Highway 101 and Main Street.

----------

Traffic: At 6:40 a.m., the California Highway Patrol was reporting a man walking on the right side of Highway 101 southbound just north of Ventura Road at the edge of Oxnard.

----------

Weather: Sunny and breezy weather is expected in most of the county today, the National Weather Service reported.

Some low clouds and fog are expected this morning near local beaches, where high temperatures in the 70s are predicted.

Temperatures in local mountains and valleys are expected to reach into the 90s.

Uh, ca4ever, if you look in the 2nd paragraph, you will see that her name is Brittany Rakosky, age 23. Can't identify someone better than THAT! (But it's ok....I did the same thing with a different article yesterday, hehe!)

That must've been an update on her name, because it was not released when I first read the article.

Anyway, condolences her loved ones.

ca4ever;
They weren't trying to make themselves look smart, they were trying to make you look dumb! It worked! Dang you Star, you tricked this poor person.
I saw the Tahoe involved in the TC, it was one hard hit, shoved the front left side up over the vin tag on the windshield. Poor girl

So horrible!

Our children of driving age need to read this article.

Must have been driving very fast if the impact was so hard. I am assuming the car that hit her had to have been speeding if she was stopped to make a left turn. I live around the corner and heard the impact, with no screeching prior!

I think this young lady stopped at my house asking for directions last night. the time is about right and that is the direction she was coming from. She was from Orange County, young, blonde and lost in Camarillo.

How sad indeed.

Why didn't they post what kind of vehicle she was driving.

Why was she taken to Oxnard and not Camarillo which is about 5 mintes vs 15? Who was the other driver?

You and yours are in my thoughts daily. I am greatly saddened by your loss.

I just confirmed that she was the young lady that stopped by house last night just minutes before her accident.

She was a beautiful young girl. It is a shame that her life was take at such a young age. My condolences to both her family and the driver of the other car. I feel for the the other driver because he/she is now involved with this loss of life that was probably not their fault. I do not believe that alcohol was involved. Simply a failure to yield the right of way by a stressed out girl who was unfamiliar with the area.

May all find peace in this tragic loss.

I drove by this accident last night. From the look of it, it didn't seem serious or like anyone was hurt. I am very sad to read about this. There were 2 suvs involved and it just goes to show that they aren't always that safe

She was driving a Jeep, like a Wrangler. Speeds probably only around 30MPH, but when both are doing 30 toward each other, that's 60MPH. She was turning according to the article so couldn't have been going very fast, but still hit your head at 30MPH or so. From the angle of the crash it would make sense somebody would have head trauma, both hit on the driver's side. Guess maybe side airbags may have made a big difference?
Poor kid

Brittany Nicole Rakosky was my beautiful daughter. She was driving her sisters jeep and was not familar with it or the area. Her service will be held this Saturday at the Crossroads Church in Camarillo at 1:30 P.M. We have raised enough money for everthing that is needed, thanks to my sister Amber and friends of Brittany. She was a beautiful girl inside and out a free spirit that well be loved and missed by everyone. If anyone knows the driver of the other vehichle I would appreciate if they would contact me. I have tried through information to find them with no luck. I cannot tell you what a wonderful person Brie was I cannot believe she is gone. Her father says she is an angel now. Please keep us in your prayers.

I wonder if the reason you can't contact the other party is because they are not legal. Maybe contact the officer in charge, Capt. Ross Bonfiglio. Maybe you can get more info there. My condolences to your family for this tragic loss.
