Tall ships head to harbor
Eight historic ships will drop anchor in Channel Islands Harbor today to take part in a four-day festival before continuing on to San Diego.
The tall ships, replica sailing vessels from the 18th and 19th centuries, will be open for tours Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and will engage in battle re-enactments. The weekend event is part of the American Sail Training Associations' Tall Ships Challenge race that ends in San Diego.
The tall ships last stopped in Oxnard in 2005, said festival marketing director Michele Gilmour.
Battle re-enactments are scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. For a fee, people will be allowed to board and assist in a mock sea battle.
Jeff Woods is director of operations for The Lynx, a tall ship modeled after a vessel from the War of 1812 that will engage in 2 1/2-hour mock battle. He said the sea battles give people a taste of history.
"They're basically going to feel what it's like to step back in time ... what it was like when in the heat of battle," Woods said.
There also will be a pirate camp. The Port Royal Privateers will pitch tents on the beach, where patrons can participate in piracy tasks.
The festival also includes a Civil War encampment, hosted by the California chapter of the Washington Artillery of New Orleans, a Civil War re-enactment club. Club members will be dressed in Civil War garb and demonstrate how to load and shoot muskets, said club President Paul DeNublio of Thousand Oaks.
