The Ventura County Sheriff's Department is searching this morning for Victor Chavira, 38, in connection with the fatal shooting of a 26-year-old man near Camarillo this morning. Authorities are asking anyone who sees Chavira, pictured above, to call 911. He is considered armed and dangerous.

Albino Ramirez and Victor Chavira were together in a car along with Ramirez¹s wife and young son early Wednesday morning when Chavira allegedly shot the other man dead, authorities said.
The shooting occurred shortly after 4 a.m., authorities said, when the car was apparently parked beside open fields on Lewis Road, just south of Pleasant Valley Road near the edge of Camarillo.
Ventura County Sheriff¹s deputies responded about 4:10 a.m. to a report of a shooting.
By Wednesday afternoon, Chavira was in custody, and the pieces of the story were starting to fit together.
Ramirez, 26, of Casitas Springs and his wife knew Chavira, 38, of Oxnard, said Sheriff's spokesman Capt. Ross Bonfiglio. Chavira was traveling with the family when he opened fire from the passenger seat, shooting Albino Ramirez multiple times, Bonfiglio said. It wasn't clear where they were coming from or where they were going.
An autopsy determined Wednesday that Ramirez died from multiple gunshot wounds to the head, according to the Medical Examiner's Office.
Ramirez's younger brother, Miguel, said Chavira was friends with his brother, and would sometimes stop by their home. He was shocked when he heard Chavira identified as a suspect.
"I couldn't even believe it," said Miguel, 23. "Why would he turn on my brother like that? I don't know." Sheriff's officials released limited information Wednesday about a possible motive.
"We believe there is a drug component in the motive," Bonfiglio said. He said Chavira had a large amount of cash on him when he was apprehended, but declined to elaborate further.
Investigators don't believe the crime was gang-related, he said.
The Sheriff's Department identified Chavira as the homicide suspect about six hours after the crime.
Authorities used the newly installed Reverse 911 system to notify residents that Chavira was loose in the area. They use the system in an emergency, notifying residents of danger through a recorded message.
Chavira was arrested at the Conejo Creek Condominiums off Hillcrest Drive near Ventu Park Road in Newbury Park about 12:30 p.m. following an extensive manhunt, said Chief Deputy Chris Godfrey of the Sheriff's Department.
Authorities suspect Chavira ran west from an industrial park in Camarillo into the mountains and to Newbury Park. He was found about four miles west of the industrial park, in the Newbury Park neighborhood just north of Highway 101.
A roughly three-quarter mile stretch of Lewis Road south of Pleasant Valley Road was closed for more than eight hours as a result of the shooting.
Godfrey said deputies used bloodhounds to track Chavira to the industrial park, then spent Wednesday morning combing that area at Pleasant Valley and Pancho roads. They did not use the dogs to track Chavira to Newbury Park.
Chavira was spotted from the air just prior to his arrest, Godfrey said, standing in front of a phalanx of reporters and cameras for a news conference Wednesday afternoon. He did not resist arrest, Godfrey said.
Investigators were still trying to learn why Chavira went to Newbury Park, Godfrey said.
At Ramirez's home in Casitas Springs near Ventura, dozens of family members from across the country gathered Wednesday to mourn his loss, his brother said.
He described his older brother as an intelligent, outgoing man who spoke his mind. He was a cosmetics salesman.

I hear ya mac! We'll just have to wait and see! :)
Here is alot more detailed info from another site:
Ventura County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating what they say was a homicide near Camarillo. They say a woman called 911 around 4:10 AM Wednesday and said that her husband had been shot. Deputies responded to the scene to investigate, and began looking for a suspect they described as a Hispanic man, around 30, with a shaved head and dark clothing. The Sheriff's Department says that Pleasant Valley Road between Las Posas and Poncho, and, Lewis Road between Pleasant Valley Road and Cawelti Road were closed for crime scene investigation and the search for a suspect. No other details are available right now. He was reportedly armed with a handgun.

Don't you just love the description? What the heck is going on at 4 a.m. in the morning, don't people sleep!! WTF!!???
I guess obviously shootings huh?
Good one Hueneme girl, I can already hear all those Cam people complaining "it's those people who moved to Cam from Ox". Face it people you have the same problem, it's everywhere! All of our cities/towns were beautiful at one point, but we always have someone who ruins it and it's not necessarily people who move in to the town.
As I was driving to work this morning from my SP I realized what a beautiful little town I lived in. I looked up in the sky and saw the hot air balloons looked all around me and realized what a pretty scene, trees, people already working picking those fruits, people taking their daily walks, until I saw the graffiti uuuhh killed it!

For the love of God people, put down your weapons! It's insane the number of shootings...no matter where they happen...that we hear about.
What happened to just beating the crap out of each other with fists?
PV & Lewis Roads...isn't that mostly industrial and agricultural? Except for that newer development...
Let's hope for a speedy catch of the shooter.

"What happened to just beating the crap out of each other with fists?"
Ask the Oxnard officer who was just convicted of doing just that to his girlfriend!

patticakepatti...true enough patti but I wasn't really referring to domestic violence. My thought was more along the lines of instead of killing each other, just fight "old school" and handle it that way.
No violence at all would be the perfect solution but as we all know, we live in an imperfect world.

PV and Lewis...isnt really in the "boonies"...There are 30-40 Businesses and multiple ag fields in the immediate vicinity...including the business where I work...The University is a couple of miles down Lewis...the thing is...if it happened on Lewis...south of PV...there is nothing there on that side but fields...If the suspect ran northbound there are many business and some apartments..as well as the train station within a few blocks....

yes, but I have a feeling it was not all inncoent. What was a family doing out at 4 am with a child in their car. I am jumping the gun here but I ahev a feeling, they werent up to any good. There is no excuse for murder, espcially in front of his family. How sad, but I also feel as though the child should never have been put inthe situation. Again, I am jumping the gun with my assumptions, so dont attack me to soon...

I am fairly sure there is more to this story, however no matter what it is a 5year should never have to see such a thing. To lose a parent at a young age is bad enough but to witness it. May God Bless this little boy.
Posted by topsykret on August 6, 2008 at 9:25 a.m. (Suggest removal)
For anyone who lives in the area we all know this can't possibly be a random act of violence. The location of the shooting is just fields. Further down the road you have Casa Pacifica and CSUCI. It all sounds very suspect. Why would anyone be at that location at 4:00 in the morning? Why would they have a 5 year old in the car with them? Furthermore, for the shooter to be on foot is even more suspect. I look forward to hearing what really happened.

The police state they do not believe it is random. That implies they think the victim knew the shooter, or there was some kind of connection. It clearly seems if that is the case that both parties were likley doing some shady stuff. Why else would a father be pulled over at 4:30 AM with his family,by some farms, unless his car broke down on the way home from a party in Malibu. The location issue, Cam or Ox, is irrelevant. Living in Cam this shooting does not effect my perceived level of safety when I walk my dogs at night.
Posted by hotwildflower on August 6, 2008 at 9:31 a.m. (Suggest removal)
There have been many times that we pack up the kids early for long distance trips to get a jump on traffic.
You can't blame the victim for being out at this time when there is no excuse for violence.

hotwildflower, I am not blaming the victim, I am just saying I feel there is more to the story and I think you will find out soon enough. But if your husband had your child out at 4 am to do a drug deal or drive by and your child got shot, who would you blame?

The Ventura County Sheriff's Department has identified the suspect in that shooting early Wednesday morning near Camarillo in which the 26-year-old victim was killed in front of his wife and child. They are looking for 38-year-old Victor Chavera, described as 5'7" tall, 150 pounds, with short dark hair, light mustache and dressed in dark clothing. He was last seen fleeing the area of Lewis Road south of Pleasant Valley Road shortly after 4 AM. Deputies say this was not a random act of violence, but they are not saying how they know the name of the killer, or the relationship between victim and suspect. They have not released the victim's name yet, but they say his wife and child were not injured in the shooting which happened in their SUV which had stopped while they were traveling northbound on Lewis Road south of Pleasant Valley Road. That stretch of roadway has been shut down since the killing as the crime scene is processed and they continue to search for the killer using blood hounds and a helicopter

Well now that we are all speculating...
Maybe the wife either shot her husband or had someone shoot him for her, and the person she has named as the perp, is her enemy that she is trying to set up for the murder of her husband, so she can live happily ever after with her babies real daddy that is crossing the border as we speak for a reunion.

Thanks BeaHappi - We were able to drop the kid off this am no problem though we had to go around the back way to get to the Y - so it is not completely locked down. My wife thinks I am over-reacting. The y says no other parents have taken their kids home...I spoke with the CSUCI Police (where I work and easier to get a hold of) and they couldn't advise me one way or the other.

kvolkan i understand what you are saying, however with the area locked down you may not be able to get to the Y as easily now, and being that they are on alert or locked down which ever your child may be safe than you think at this point.

Just talked to the Y and the CSUCI police. Everyone at the Y is fine -seems like it is just out of the major area of concern - though they are on alert. No one else has pulled their kids out. The police focus seems to be on the industrial complex off of PV rd. The police have two command posts set up - they think the guy is still there. Looks like he would have a difficult time slipping out at this point. Hope they catch him. I am guessing domestic dispute.

where is Casitas Springs? ... Maybe this couple was going to LAX to take a flight to Mexico and the suspect is an uncle of the victim's wife. They picked up the suspect in Oxnard, while in the car the suspect and the victim had an argument and they pulled over to drop of the suspect and once off, he shot the victim... By looking at the picture it doesn't look like it was a drug deal gone wrong. But I do understand JR's point of view on the baby on board.

I wonder if maybe the deceased was driving to work, leaving the SUV to the wife and child. Or perhaps they were both going to work and taking their son to someone's house to watch him. There are lots of reasons to be up at 4 am on a weekday, especially if the deceased works in the fields or in landscaping.
The window being down, the suv at a stop - was he in an accident? Did the shooter come up to his window and ask for directions? Something had to make the victim roll down that window.
Too shoot him in front of his family is horrendous, his wife and little boy will forever be traumatized. For that alone, he should get the max.

My dad used to work graveyard and swing shift in industrial area in Oxnard. My mom would pack us kids up in the car (since at the time my parents only had one vehicle) and drive us to go pick up dad at 2,3,4 etc in the morning. We would climb in the back of the car with our pillows and blankets like no big deal. Back then you didn't think of the danger we could have been in. Lady in the car with kids in the middle of the night? Not so safe now. I wonder if this was the case with this family, possibly on their way to or from a job pickup and the shooter was a friend or co worker. All we know right now is he was pissed off at something enough to kill the man in front of his family. Could you be anymore bruital! I hope they get a hold of his quickly!

I must have misread the article - thought it said the vehicle was stopped when the attack occurred.
I agree they knew each other, at least someone in that vehicle new the shooter, to be able to give such a detailed description, possibly a coworker, friend, relative?
I hope they find the SOB and that he's not running where they aren't looking.

What if this guy was at their house in Casitas Springs? They all left together to find something (drugs, money) When it wasn't found they pulled over the guy shot him and ran... or the wife is scared $---less and told a lie... to save herself and child.

805 - thanks for the clarification but my initial assumption (and yes, I know what happens when one ASuMEs ...) was perhaps an accident or the guy stopped in middle of the street, making the suv come to a stop. There are so many scenarios, I wonder if the truth will ever be told.

My husband works off of Pancho Road. They will let people leave, but you are subject to full vehicle and possibly personal search both going in and out. The lines are looong so he's going to 'hunker down' and hit the vending machines for lunch. They also have been told to not work past their normal hours and plan on another search and big delay before getting out of the complex tonight.

THE WIFE IS TOTALLY GOING TO END UP BEING BEHIND THIS WATCH. I THINK IT IS SO SAD FOR THIS 5YR OLD BOY TO HAVE TO LIVE THE REST OF HIS LIFE PLAYING THAT MEMORY BACK IN HIS HEAD UNLESS HE WAS SLEEPING. STILL HE DOESNT HAVE A FATHER ARROUND ANYMORE AND NOONE DESERVES THAT.

A car key copied during a test drive helped three Ventura County men allegedly steal a Chevy Camaro, but the suspects didn't get far thanks to an observant neighbor, authorities said.
Arrested Monday on suspicion of grand theft auto were Isaac Valenzuela, 26 of, Ojai; Albino Ramirez-Bernal, 25, and Ruben Leal, 21, both of Ventura.
According to Ojai police, one of the men had test-driven the vehicle after responding to a private-party advertisement listing it for sale. He returned a week later in another car with two other men. The second car was seen driving around the West Villanova Road neighborhood until it stopped and two of the men got out. They were then seen getting into the Camaro by a resident who knows the car's owner. The resident called the Sheriff's Department.
A sheriff's deputy spotted the car near Casitas Vista Road and Highway 33. The Camaro and the second car were stopped and the drivers and occupant arrested. The three men, who also were arrested on suspicion of drug-related charges, were booked into the Ventura County Jail and have since been released.
The vehicle was returned to its owner undamaged.

MS_Cali - You reminded me of when I was little I can't believe I had forgotten that. My parents used to work in the fields and they would leave very early in the morning to go to work. My brother and I would be carried to the car, in our pj's, pillow and blankets. They would drop us off at the baby sitter. Our poor parents :O(
I do remember my dad used to smoke and he drove with the window down, so I guess there could be many reasons why this poor guy had his window down.
But it also sounds like the wife knew who the killer was, they named him pretty quickly.

The Ventura County Sheriff's Department says the killing of a man in front of his wife and son early Wednesday morning was drug related. It happened on a lonely stretch of Lewis Road south of Pleasant Valley Road near Camarillo around 4 AM. Captain Ross Bonfiglio tells KVTA News that the alleged killer, 38-year-old Victor Chavira, was sitting in the front passenger seat of 26-year-old Albino Ramirez' SUV which was parked along the northbound side of the road. Ramirez, from Casitas Springs, was sitting in the driver's seat, his wife and 5-year-old son were in the back seat. Bonfiglio says that Chavira allegedly fired several shots at Ramirez, killing him. The woman and boy were not hurt. Chavira then got out of the vehicle and ran off. Ramirez wife then called 911 and reported the shooting. Bonfiglio says that search dogs gave them a direction of Chavira's travel, which was towards Poncho Road. But he says that other "investigative techniques" led them to a condo on Calle Turquesa in the Newbury Park section of Thousand Oaks where they set up a surveillance. Around noon, they spotted Chavira and took him into custody without further incident

yes, but I have a feeling it was not all inncoent.

I'm not sure if any of you know what the National Night Out is but I find it funny that Oxnard chose not to particiapte this year. With all of its crime you would think they would jump on this free event where police, fire, SWAT and such come into the community for a meet and greet with neighborhoods, discuss what they do, what they are about and so forth. Strange... I guess the crime in Oxnard is no big deal anymore and no one cares enought to try anything to stop it. The event is mainly for the youth. This makes a greap opportunity for the community to start young with good influences and positve people in their own neighborhoods, to see them in a positive light on their own blocks.

Getreal, in a sense I agree with you re: the national night out program. However to say it's "free" is a bit naive. Having all those forces out speaking with civilians isn't free. All those salaries are being paid - they aren't volunteering on their days off. I personally feel it's money well spent, but it does cost money. In addition, I seem to recall hearing the the powers that be in the City of Oxnard felt that they couldn't sacrifice the people power for the event. They need all the forces they have out doing their jobs. They felt that having them attend the event could potentially create an issue if a police presence were required, etc. I see both sides of this issue. Community outreach however is an excellent idea and a community like Oxnard could benefit more than many. It does seem like the OPD does care in reaching the community and that's evidenced by David Keith - an OPD spokesperson - coming on here and giving us the scoop from time to time. I'm sure there's more to be done though.

It's sad the police didn't turn Albino over to ICE while they had the chance. It just might have saved his life. Now instead we have another widow and another fatherless child. WTG.

I hope I don't get removed...but...this is factual.
The area in Newbury Park at Ventu Park and Hillcrest Drive, is an area that is crime ridden. It is a Latino and illegal alien enclave area. There has been drugs, drive-bys knifings, shootings and other crimes in this area of four-plexes. The area was a great place to live in the 1980s.
Those are the facts.
I hope I don't get removed.
I'm sorry for the deceased man's family and friends.

Wow Junior, you predicted something that most people assumed. Before he was caught, I also knew that this was either a fallout between two people involved with drugs or trafficing.
My Dad used to work in the fields, south of this location on Cawelti Road (we used to live in that white trailer that is still there, that is surrounded by a chain-link fence). When I translated this story to him, right away he said that it was a possible deal gone bad or that the suspect wanted to shoot him away from a neighborhood/ city.
The thing that my Dad told me is that a few people who work in agriculture might traffic drugs in and out of the country or want to be wannabe Mexican Mafia. I don't know if Chavira fits that mold.
To enlighten a few of you, agricultural workers report to work around 6 to 6:15 AM (4:10 AM is way too early). There are times when growers have agricultural workers spend a night in the fields to make sure certain fields are irrigated if they are behind schedule. My Dad would go out sometimes around 12, 1, or 2 AM to shut off water mains. Sometimes, my Mom would go with him and my Dad would take a few dogs with him.
One acquaintance my Dad knew spent a night irrigating crops for a grower about 15-17 years ago. He was sleeping in his car & awakened by another car with people who wanted to rob him. Ironically, this happened southwest of Lewis and PV roads around 2-3AM. After a confrontation & being beaten, he was able to escape into corn fields & under the cover of darkness, making his way to a house on the corner of Lewis & Cawelti. Sheriff deputies came out & ended up catching two males & a female who were still there, probably to finish the guy off.
I apologize if I typed too much. I guess if I want to be liked, I need to act obnoxious & wannabe thuglicious like Junior (Oh sorry, I was thinking out loud).

Santio89 - Thank you for this story, and wow, your dad is one remarkable man, those crazy hours, yikes, and on top of that you sound like a nice person.
Hang in there, as we all do.

Comments: The police, fire dept, horses motorcycles etc come intor your neighborhood for 1/2 hour. THey rotate for the evening each department staying for only 1/2 hour. The "cost" of this versus the outcome is huge. If Oxnard cannot afford to let their departments come into neighborhoods for 1/2 hour then they have bigger problems than we know.

Comments: really
"In addition, I seem to recall hearing the the powers that be in the City of Oxnard felt that they couldn't sacrifice the people power for the event. They need all the forces they have out doing their jobs".
Where did you get that information? It's sad if it's true.
