S.P. woman tased, arrested after car chase

A Santa Paula woman was tased and arrested this week after she allegedly ran from police following a brief car chase, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The chase began in Oxnard about 11:30 p.m. Monday, said Officer Matt Winter of the Ventura CHP.
Melissa Garcia, 21, was allegedly speeding and weaving on Rose Avenue northbound when officers pulled her over, Winter said. When an officer walked up to the car, she allegedly sped off on Central Avenue.
After about a mile, Garcia slowed sharply and tried to make a right turn at Santa Clara Avenue, but ended up skidding across the street and into a concrete irrigation pipe.
Garcia then ran into a drainage ditch, and an officer shot her with a taser as she tried to flee, Winter said. She was arrested without further incident.
Garcia was taken to a local hospital for treatment of a laceration to her hand she sustained in the drainage ditch, then booked into Ventura County Jail on suspicion of felony evading an officer and misdemeanor driving under the influence of alcohol.
She remained in custody Tuesday afternoon in lieu of $60,000 bail.
