Oxnard officer arrested on theft charges

An Oxnard police officer was arrested at his home Monday night on suspicion of theft.

Officer Matthew Purnell was taken to county jail and later released after posting $10,000 bail, said Scott Whitney, the assistant chief of the Oxnard Police Department. Purnell has been with the department for three years, Whitney said.

Whitney said detectives began their investigation after a complaint that Purnell had stolen money from a citizen.

Whitney said investigators found evidence of "an additional theft" while searching Purnell's home Monday night.

"The Oxnard Police Department takes these accusations very seriously," Whitney said, adding "we hire people of character and integrity to serve our community."

"When we find that we have come up short against that standard, we take immediate action to address the problem."

i.e. Officer Polo, Brisslinger, and Perez.

If this is character and integrity, I good a bridge in Brooklyn for sale.

Indeed, as the motto says..."To protect (your money, that is) and to serve (it myself, that is)".

all police departments hire from the human race. they strive to get the best, but sometimes all the intensive screening still lets an alleged less than honest person through.

The very nature of the job will attract a certain number of power hungry immoral individuals. It is not an indictment of the entire force. The fact that the are not covering it up speaks well for the department.

Rebel123, I agree with you, Mr Nevagitve poster BRAY, names 4 people, out of over a hundred. And if these 4 came to life, than good for the OPD.

it's a good thing.............we need to see that these folks are human. we can't excuse this behaviorand we shall hold sworn officers to a higher standard, but must we act so shocked when we realize they are indeed fallible?

we've got people leading people. it's a human government, folks. did you realy expect anything more?

4 out of 100 is unacceptable.

Imagine if 4 out of 100 doctors failed at their job. Would you feel safe at the hospital?

How can the city accept 4 out of 100 bad cops that have been in trouble within the past year.

FYI Bray

4 out of 100 doctors do fail at their jobs

"Imagine if 4 out of 100 doctors failed at their job. Would you feel safe at the hospital?"

if only that number was that low. based on the number of malpractice suits, it is probably around 50 out of 100 who fail at their jobs!

a few bad cops is normal for every city. especially when they are dealing with the garbage they deal with every day in Oxnard. It can change a persons outlook on life, and it can change the person they were.

get over it all you cop haters out there.

My bad on the doctor analogy, that was just lame.

I would be the first one to call Ox PD if I had a problem or needed help. They do a great job in a very thankless profession.

I just find the quote by Whitney very untimely, considering there have been some high profile corruption within the past year.

Good cops gone bad? Possibly, but you can't say that "we hire people of character and integrity to serve our community." When these stories have highlighted the local newspapers

Doctors do not go to school for that long to intentionally eff up. Malpractice is one thing--baseless lawsuits are another. A person who steals does that intentionally. Not saying the dude is guilty--just putting the 4 out of 100 into perspective.

While there are no excuses for this behavior, OPD is one of the finest group of police officiers I have ever met or worked with as a Citizen of the community. I have sat through their professional standards presentations and it is extrememly thorough. A leopard will never change their spots, but who we were 5 years ago is not who we are today. Some change for the better and for this officier he was unfortunate and just cost himself and his family great humiliation. OPD did what they are supposed to do - took a lead, investiaged and made an arrest where did OPD fail? They didn't. Someone with bad judgement did. And as far as I am concerned, I trust the OPD with my life, my families life and even my purse. Good Bless these officiers for the sacrafices they make everyday for all of us, even those who spit in their faces.

bray,

No one said the city is accepting "4 out of 100".

That came from a poster.

There is NO perfect mechanism by which to judge a persons future performance or moral compass. It just doesn't exist.

People are not robots.

All police departments can do is their level best to test and screen as thoroughly as possible individuals applying for the position of peace officer.

It is an exremely demanding job and gives a person tremendous power over the people in any given city.

This responibility has to be taken seriously, but not without much reservation as to how an individual will perform his or her duty faithfully.

Most do an outstanding job, day in and day out.

Of course, as with any profession with this much responsibility and stress some fall thru the cracks.

It wasn't the fault of the examiners in the initial hiring stages, rather I believe time on the job and misguided thoughts finally changes ones perspective.

I, personally will not pass judgement on this officer, I don't know all the facts, just like know one here posting comments does.

He is still due his constitutional right to the legal process, just like you or I would be.

After all, the next time you need to call someone in an emergency, is it going to be the people that post totally negative comments pretending to have all the answers and making up things just to post for the sake of posting, or are you going to dial 9-1-1?

How I see it is that Oxnard received a complaint, reviewed the complaint, responded to the complaint, and took action. Every group, entity, and organization has a bad apple or two. Those who trash the OPD because of the actions of this rogue cop are probably folks who have engaged in conduct that resulted in a negative experience with law enforcement; i.e., criminal conduct.

I'm sick of cop bashers; the fine men and women of law enforcement put their lives on the line every day to protect the rest of us from the gangbangers and other trash who would otherwise prey on us as victims. They do this for a lousy salary and undeserved scorn from some of the morons they protect and serve.

Thank you, Oxnard Police Department, for investigating and arresting a dishonest cop and for the daily protection you provide to all of us. You are the true heroes of the community!

You're obviously clueless. I'm no cop, and never would be under any circumstances. The job doesn't pay enough, and the risk are huge, not to mention the lack of respect cops have to deal with from folks like you. You're lucky there are folks willing to do the job of cops, as without them, you wouldn't exist.

As for the "issues that are above and beyond that," I'm no mindreader. You'll need to elaborate upon what those "issues" are. If you knew anything, you'd recognize that you need to articulate your thoughts with words, instead of assuming that folks who don't share your irrational perspective can read your mind.

It is truly a blessing to have a blog like this so that all of the ignorant cop bashers can talk to themselves freely, but unidentified. Your points and opinions show just how poorly the California public education system is performing.

Cops are like no other group of person. They are in the very small minority that even aspire to that type of job. Yet, some are not well suited for it, and hopefully are found and handled properly before they get to the level of notoriety that the Rampart officers obtained.

Purnell is his own person. His father and mother are their own persons. Each had a career and life and must stand on what they did while employed by the public sector. Why is it at all pertinent whether this officer had parents who worked in law enforcement? I can only imagine how much stupid crap patticake would put on this site if the officer had been named Smith, Jones, Lopez, or any other common name.

OPD has had no more "bad cops" than any other department in the country, when you do the math to find out the percentages. But, I get the idea that they are more willing than most to air their dirty laundry, and to expose their fallen ones to the public than most departments. This should allow the other officers to work with a greater degree of trust from the community.

If this guy is guilty, it appears that OPD will not even think of offering him a free ride. That is all we should expect from our law enforcement agencies! If there is a problem, fix it immediately! OPD does that publicly, so most of you are just b----ing to hear yourselves b---- and see your name in print

["Everyone wants to speak about police, however they are important to have on our side"

high_society: I have to disagree with this.]

If you disagree with the necessity for police, then you are very naive. I've had the experience of being in court while some of the folks the police protect us from were being prosecuted. Without police, none of us would be safe.

[high_society: Yes, people make mistakes, but the police are to be held to a higher standard and they CERTAINLY know right from wrong!]

That is true, and our courts do hold police to a higher standard. When they are convicted of crimes, the punishment is rarely light.

high_society, instead of joining those who speak negatively about the OPD which protects you as well as everyone else, why don't you suggest some solutions? What could the OPD realistically do to prevent situations like the one discussed in this story? Could they have handled this situation better? Hired a psychic? What?

I have always taught my kids to respect the law and those that serve to protect us but I am really starting to wonder about our Oxnard PD. I think they need to do some serious investigating and internal audits. My adult daughter was telling me about her friend's younger brother being out (teenagers) and the OPD stopped them and rightfully so they were up to no good. But my concern is the way they handled it and told them that they could rough them up and nothing would happen to them because there were police. I think these OPD officers are getting too big of a head and think they have more power than they do. They need to work within the law and give others reason to respect them.

And one more thing why is it that everyone wants to know and some say its irrelevent as to the family of the person arrested? Thats why I do not believe that when kids get into trouble that thier families should be brought up into the story. People wanting address's of the family etc. One person above said the most intelligent comment what does the family have to do with it. There is always one bad apple in the bunch. Including families etc.
