Institute at CLU launches women's financial Web site
The California Institute of Finance at California Lutheran University has launched a Web site for low-income and minority women.
Economic Empowerment for Women, http://www.BreakFreee.org ("the extra e' empowers"), offers free, unbiased assistance to a group that often needs the most help but can least afford it. The institute is also targeting people and organizations that offer support to women.
Topics range from budgeting and debt relief to retirement and estate planning. For women who want to improve their financial situation but are unsure where to start, real-life situations — such as single mom, divorcée and widow — suggest issues to consider.
A database of frequently asked questions offers answers from professional financial planners, along with links to organizations, planning calculators, books and articles that have been verified to offer noncommercial information.
Women can submit questions online, or social workers can send queries on behalf of clients. CLU financial planning students will answer the queries with the assistance of practicing financial planners and faculty. Features to be added include community forums and tutorials on financial skills.
The Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards provided the institute with a $40,000 grant in 2007 to fund the project. Some of the students in CLU's Master of Business Administration and Certificate in Financial Planning programs helped develop the online center.
