Congratulations 80th to Nellie & Carl Herman
Nellie was born in Reserve, Kansas 1909, Carl was born in Hiawatha, Kansas 1910.
They met at school in a one room school house. She was seven, he was six years old. They knew each other all their lives both their families owned farms.
They were wed August 18, 1928 in Reserve Kansas. They lived on a farm. They had five children four boys and one girl. When the farm no longer became a benefit to the family they decided they had to do something. World War II was just beginning. Carl got a job with Lockheed Aircraft in Burbank Calif. He tried to figure out how he could get a family of seven to California. Carl and his brother came up with an idea. Carl bought a farm truck and a flat bed. Carl and his family built the first motor home. They built the sides, roof, beds, and stove inside also a punching bag in one corner to help keep the boys entertained. Carl and Nellie put their farm up for sale and had an auction. And in 1941 were on there way, when they got as far as Boulder Dam they were stopped by armed guards. Their truck was searched and they took their 25lb bag of potatoes. At this point of the trip the potatoes were all they had left to feed their children. Nellie put up a fight with the guard. She told them she would sit right there and cook all those potatoes if she had to. You guessed it, the guards let them keep the potatoes. Carl and Nellie lived in the truck camper for a few months until they could find a place that would take a big family. They settled in Glendale. Carl went to work with Lockheed. He was an experiment mechanic retired about 1970. They moved to Canoga Park, California about 1941 and lived there until 1965. They now live in Montecito, California. They raised five children. They have twenty grandchildren, fifty great-grand children and several great-great grandchildren. The family count is around one hundred fifty people in all. This August 18, 2008 Carl and Nellie Herman will be celebrating their 80th wedding anniversary, which is almost unheard of.
