Two men suspected of stealing avocados

Two Los Angeles County men were arrested Monday night in Camarillo on suspicion of felony theft after a deputy spotted them stealing avocados from trees, authorities said.

A deputy on patrol arrested Thomas Sherry, 40, of Los Angeles and Ricardo Luna, 38, of Chatsworth after watching them pick avocados from trees near Santa Rosa Road and Adobe Way shortly after 10 p.m., sheriff's Capt. Dave Kenney said.

Sherry and Luna were booked into Ventura County Jail. Stealing avocados can be a felony when the fruit stolen is worth more than $100 wholesale, Kenney said.

Way to go Cops! You captured some big time criminals there! By the way, our local drug dealer is out of Chowchilla prison for women and dealing again!!! Will it take three more years until she will be arrested and convicted again??

AleaSamos,

Agricultural theft is no petty crime in Ventura County. Land is expensive as is the water, fertilizer and pesticides put into crops. Even if you are contemptuous of the losses faced by farmers (some have been driven out of business by theft), keep in mind that more than 20% of the avocados consumed in the U.S. are grown here in Ventura County next time you complain about the price.

R.GYURKOVITZ, I'M SURE ALEASAMOS BELIEVES THAT STEALING AVOCADOS IS A CRIME, BUT AROUIND THIS SAME COUNTY ARE MANY MANY CRIMES THAT INVOLVE STREET DRUGS & CRIMINALS THAT HAVE BEEN CAUGHT OVER & OVER & NOT TOO MUCH HAPPENS TO THOSE CRIMINALS BECAUSE THEY'RE OUT DOING THE SAME CRAP AGAIN, & SO ALEASAMOS IS PROBABLY COMPARING THE TWO CRIMES ??? ALTHOUGH, I AGREE WITH HAVING THESE TWO GUYS PROSECUTED IF OVER THE 100.00 TO TEACH THEM A LESSON.
VCSD, JUST GET OUT THERE IN THE COUNTY & TAKE THE THUGS /STREET GANGS OFF THE STREET FOR THEIR DRUGS & WHAT HAVE YOU.

AleaSamos ,Who is she?
From what everyone said yesterday on this was that it was someones farm land , it was a couple of avocado tree's on a City street. So who is picking and taking the avocados? Didn't sound as if the tree's were maintained. Just there on the property. Maybe for the City workers to pick???

AnnaWhaat,

AleaSamos is the alias (or possibly the real name) of the first person who posted on this thread.

I was obviously mistaken. I heard SRVR and assumed an orchard because avocado theft IS such a big problem.

According to Google Earth the trees appear to be on private property. If that was the case it is still theft, though not as serious as stealing someone's livelihood. I'd give them the benefit of the doubt if they were doing it in broad daylight but ten at night?

GitRDone,

According to netiquette, TYPING IN ALL CAPS IS TANTAMOUNT TO YELLING. AleaSamos criticized the police (who are not responsible for sentencing) for catching these two guys instead of her local drug dealer.

Now, Lord knows I'm not a big fan of our local police (Being forced to stand in the hot sun for an hour while cops give you the fifth degree before finally taking you to the police station to give a (clean) urine test - another hour - and then giving you a speeding ticket without so much as an "I'm sorry for ruining your morning." - bear in mind this was to be a fifteen minute trip, my wife was frantic with worry when I finally turned up - will sour anyone on cops.) but sometimes criticisms are a little bit unfair. Cops can't just stop you and search you any time they want (thank God!) they need to have probable cause. A mere criminal history doesn't cut the mustard.

Agriculture is the backbone of Ventura County's economy. Thus, this scum came in from Los Angeles to pilfer from our economic life blood. The judges who pass sentences on these clowns out to him them with lightening bolts. As THE MAN use to say, hang 'em high!

stealing is stealing. it does not matter what the item is. when items are stolen more often then not, the consumer pays for it in the long run. charge these criminal losers with a felony, and move on to the next batch of losers.

ok there is this tree in fillmore, house then sidewalk then green grass with an avocado tree in it with the branches hanging over into the road. So if I stop and pick on is that a crime? Its in the road basically.......?

AnnaWhaat,

Not if it's in the public right-of-way (the road); however, in most areas, the sidewalk is treated as a public access easement. Maintained, but not owned by the municipality (you can be issued a citation or detained for loitering on sidewalks for this reason).

Annawhaat these trees are on PRIVATE land. It costs a whole lot to water these trees. It is a big time fine to steal this fruit.
The price you pay in the store is in no way what the grower gets.....ever.
Bottom line really is that it does not belong to them.
One more thing on something that was said about the cops. I really doubt it was a sting operation. They most likely came upon the crime while on patrol, or a tip from someone.
So, what are they supposed to do? Nothing, because there are other crimes being committed at the same time.

tathiba1 ,its not a grower such as a ranch. or field. Its one tree on public sidewalk and street?
So if I see a few on the ground and pick them up is that wrong?
