U.S. water polo schedules CLU practice

United States Water Polo Team to scrimmage Saturday

The U.S. Water Polo Team is inviting fans to its practice and scrimmage Saturday at the Cal Lutheran pool.

The U.S. team will participate in an autograph and photography session. Fans will also get a chance to watch the team train and watch them later in a full intrasquad scrimmage.

CLU's pool can accommodate about 600 guests for this event. Registration will be held from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Team practice starts at 1 p.m. and will continue until about 4:30. Tickets cost $20 per person on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The U.S. team will train in Ventura County until heading to Beijing to compete in the Olympics, Aug. 8-24. Volunteers are trying to raise at least $94,000 to help the team in training and travel expenses.

A fundraising barbecue is planned May 30 in Camarillo.

The United States is coached by former team captain Terry Schroeder, now a chiropractor who lives in Thousand Oaks. He played in three Olympics, winning silver medals in 1984 and 1988.

There are about 25 players currently on the roster. Only 13 will be named to the team on June 28.
