San Diego State golfer Matt Hoffenberg was named the 2008 Mountain West Conference freshman of the year.

The former Royal High standout posted a 71.75 scoring average this season, third best in the MWC and 66th nationally. Hoffenberg posted four top-10 finishes this season and is the first MWC freshman of the year honoree from San Diego State.

Hoffenberg was also named to the all-conference team, joining teammates Aaron Goldberg and David Palm on the first team.

Goldberg was named the conference player of the year. It is just the second time in the nine-year history of the MWC that two individual honorees came from the same school.

At last week's MWC tournament, Hoffenberg finished in a tie for 26th at 7-over 220.

Kang headed to SDSU: Oak Park High senior Alex Kang has signed a letter of intent to play for San Diego State.

Kang has had a tremendous year of junior golf, one that culminated with his selection to the Rolex Junior All-America second team by the American Junior Golf Association.

Last summer, Kang captured the TEE UP Junior Challenge at Industry Hills Golf Club, where he carded a winning total of 10-under-par 203 on rounds of 68-66-69. He also notched a pair of runner-up finishes at the Mission Hills Desert Junior (8-under 208) in Rancho Mirage and the TomatoBank Northern California Classic (11-under 205) in Pleasanton.

Aztecs coach Ryan Donovan hopes to have both Kang and another incoming freshman, Andrew Cooley, in the lineup next season.

"We are extremely thrilled to land two individuals of Alex and Andrew's caliber," Donovan said. "Not only are they talented players, but they both possess a solid work ethic and tremendous passion for the game, which should enable them to become outstanding collegiate golfers."

Hole-in-one report: Michael Moffatt aced the 149-yard eighth hole at Los Robles Golf Course, using a 7-iron. His hole in one was witnessed by Stew Klein, Frank Lennartz and Bill Moothart.

Henry Endo, a member of the Saticoy Regional Senior Men's Club, had a hole in one on Saticoy's 115-yard 15th hole. Endo used a 9-iron. It was witnessed by Jim Eubanks, Bill Kohagan and Howard Hoover.
