BASEBALL
WARRIORS FINISH SECOND
Highlights: Ventura County Warriors — The 9-and-under Warriors finished second in the Mizuno Spring Classic at La Mirada on April 12. The Warriors went 3-0 to advance to the championship game against the former USSSA World Series champion Orange County Stars, now known as the Damage Control. After a very dramatic weekend in La Mirada, the Warriors battled hard, but came up short against the former USSSA champs. Currently, the Warrior are tied for first in the Pony Mustang Platinum Select League and have won several other tournaments including the Ojai Valley Turkey Shoot, Super Series World Series Qualifier, William S. Hart Spring Classic Championship and USSSA World Series (consolation championship). The Warriors finished second in the Las Virgenes Pony All-Star Invitational. The Warriors are Jacob Zaragoza, Nick Arroyo, Chad Gallion, Jacob Castro, Nick Spencer, Austin Maciel, Mikey Fontyn, Billy Crist, Robert Castellanos and Jacob Flores. The coaches are Ed Castro, John Gallion, Derek Fontyn and Billy Crist. The managers are John Zaragoza and Jaime Arroyo. The Warriors are looking for donations and sponsors for this summer's national qualifiers. Information: Zaragoza at 236-5964.

VENTURA WEST PREVAILS
Southern California Volleyball Association Mandatory 3 Tournament
Highlights: Ventura West — The girls' 15-year-old team captured first place at the Saddleback Volleyball Club. Ventura West defeated Saddleback Volleyball Club, Orange County Volleyball Cub and Cal Juniors to finish 3-0. Hannah Crowder had 20 kills. Jessica Ammerman had nine aces and Sarah Dewitt had 22 assists.

OJAI TEAM PLACES THIRD
Seaside Tournament
Highlights: Ojai Lightning — The Ojai Lightning girls' basketball club concluded its season on April 20, taking third place in the fifth-grade division at the Seaside Tournament in Ventura. Coaches Jeff Becker and Bob Boyd have been working with the club since before Christmas, preparing them for the tournament season by competing in the sixth-grade division of the Ventura County Youth Basketball Association league, which ran from January to March. Previous to the Ventura Tournament, the Lightning captured second place in the Lompoc and Ojai tournaments, where they were paced by the strong play of point guard Tracey Edwards and center Amanda Swezey. Georgie Becker, Ciara Bryne, Madeline Mazzola and McKenna Clausen led the charge at Seaside, where the Lightning defeated teams from Saugus and Ventura before falling, in a close contest, to San Fernando Valley. "The girls all played extremely well," said coach Becker. "The team is really progressing in their movement of the ball, rebounding and defensive play." Other Lightning players who appeared in the tournaments included McKenzie Boyd, Karen Pineda, Jenna Plasmyer, Stella Slaughter and Kathleen Cotti.

REAL SOCAL WINS TITLE
Bakersfield Brigade Cup
Highlights: Real SoCal — The under-9 girls won their first tournament after leaving Real California. Real SoCal went 4-0 and allowed only one goal the entire weekend. In the opener, the girls defeated Real California from Camarillo, 2-0, with goals by Kayla Manion and Tess Farrar. In Game 2, Real beat the Avalanche from Santa Clarita, 2-0, with two goals by Veronica Merrill. Alison Madden had two assists. In Game 3, Real routed Menifee, 9-0, with a number of players scoring and nearly everyone played goalie. In the championship game, Real SoCal played the Bakersfield team and took a 1-0 lead late in the first half with a goal by Farrar. Real SoCal scored early in the second half with a goal by Kaitlyn Halstead. Bakersfield answered to make it, 2-1. Merrill sealed the win with a strike off a free kick late in the game. Coach Kevin Madden said he was proud of the defense and of the goalkeeping of Halstead.
REAL SOCAL FINISHES SECOND
Bakersfield Brigade Cup
Highlights: Real SoCal — The under-13 girls made it to the finals after coach Kevin Madden's team left the Real California Club. In Game 1, Real SoCal beat the rival Simi Valley Chivas, 2-0, with Sammy Gee netting both goals. Team captain Nicole Molen and Gabby Steven earned assists. In Game 2 of pool play, Real SoCal defeated Santa Clarita, 2-0. Goals were scored by Hannah Madden off of a free kick and Angie Hook scored off an assist by Molen. Midfielder Gabby Stevens played outstanding as well as goalie Laura Rivera. In the semifinal game, Real SoCal defeated Bakersfield, 4-0, with two goals by Annie Lee Molen, one off a Madden corner kick. Hannah Taylor, a new player, scored her first goal. South Valley prevailed, 2-0, over Real SoCal in the championship game. Coach Madden praised the play of goalie Kelcie Brodsky and the defense of Emily Higbee, Alex Gettings, Megan Huning and Madden as they allowed only two goals in the tournament.
MADDEN MOVES TEAMS TO REAL SOCAL
After a very successful and exciting year at Real California, coach Kevin Madden has moved three girls' teams to Real SoCal in the Conejo Valley. The teams moving are the under-9, under-10 and under-13. The girls' under-9, in its first season this past season came in first place and never lost a game in league and made it to the round of eight in league cup and will be playing Silver Elite this fall. The girls' under-10 also finished first and earned a promotion to Silver Division this fall after having a very successful inaugural season and was the only Bronze team to make it to the round of 16 in League cup. The girls' under-13 came in second in league and will be promoted to Silver Elite in the fall. This team has been promoted the last two years. "Real SoCal is the premier soccer club in Southern California and one of the top soccer clubs in the nation," said Madden, who is forming a new under-9 girls' team.
