Description: Named "Fence Post," the ninth hole earned its name from the many fence posts found (and left standing) on this undulating hole. It is the first of two long par-5s. It features trees and brush on both sides of the fairway. There is also a good sized bunker that sits in the middle of the fairway about 115 yards from the green. This large and severe green is one of the most interesting on the course. All the undulations were created by nature; all the architects did was stake it out and cover it with grass.
How to play it: There are many ways to attack this hole. However, drives up the left side will shorten the hole a bit and they will be rewarded with a better view of the many surprises waiting in the lay-up area. Drives down the right will have to navigate the second shot with a bit more caution. Like many other greens at Rustic Canyon, this one has a lot of undulations, making approach shots more of a challenge. With pin placements on the upper right and back left of this nearly 10,000 square foot green, there is a great advantage for those approaching from the right side of the fairway. For hole locations in the left-side valley, the second shot placed down the left side will have a distinct advantage.
