Man found guilty of murder

A jury on Monday found 25-year-old Lewis Brown guilty of first-degree murder in connection with the death of Bruce Barksdale in Oxnard three years ago.

Jurors also found Brown guilty of assault with a firearm and causing great bodily injury in the accidental shooting of Sophia Shua while he was firing at Barksdale.

Brown, of Las Vegas, is accused of killing Barksdale, 27, on the parking lot of the Channel Islands Inn and Suites on March 8, 2005.

Brown showed no emotion as the verdicts were being read. Prosecutors say Brown is a member of the Black Mafia and his gang moniker is "Maniac."

Ventura County Superior Court Judge Edward Brodie set the sentencing for May 27.

Prosecutor Chrystina Jenson said Brown is facing 57 years to life in prison.

Relatives of the victim and Brown wept, and Barksdale's mother, Darlene, sobbed after the verdicts were read in the nearly packed courtroom.

Barksdale had lived in Oxnard, though his last address was in Moorpark.

Jurors received the case Friday afternoon and announced that they had arrived at a verdict late Monday morning.

Outside the courtroom, Darlene Barksdale cried, saying she was happy with the verdicts.

"He was my only son. He was my only son. He was a good one. He loved me, and I miss the hell out of him," she said.

Darlene Barksdale said her son had three children and was a good family man.

Darlene Barksdale and her daughter, Leslie, attended Brown's trial.

"I'm happy. It was well overdue," said Leslie Barksdale.

As she was leaving the courthouse, Brown's mother, Stephanie Summerford, said the verdicts will be appealed.

"We are going to appeal it because they are false allegations and lies," she said. "They did not have any evidence that my son did this crime."

When asked about the four eyewitnesses to the shooting, Summerford said they weren't credible. She accused prosecutors of "coaching" the witnesses to "say that my son committed this horrible, terrible, horrific murder."

Summerford said she expects a new trial after a successful appeal.

"When this is retried because of all the evidence, my son will come home, and he'll be exonerated."

According to court testimony, Barksdale was a drug dealer who was shot after he stopped paying the $400 monthly rent to use Brown's cell phone, which contained the phone numbers of drug-using customers. Barksdale — who was also a member of the Black Mafia, according to testimony — had told people that he wasn't making enough money from the local drug users while taking the risk of arrest for drug dealing.

During closing arguments, Jenson described her case as a "slam dunk," complete with four eyewitnesses and evidence that included DNA and Brown's own words about killing the victim.

Brown's lawyer, John McNamara, who is with the Ventura County Public Defender's Office, had told jurors that Jenson didn't prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt, and he argued that his client wasn't the shooter.

He told the jury that prosecutors relied on flimsy and contradictory testimony of four eyewitnesses involved with the Black Mafia to convict Brown.

Stephanie Summerford's denial is typical of gangster mothers. "We are going to appeal it because they are false allegations and lies," she said. "They did not have any evidence that my son did this crime." This flys in the face of "...four eyewitnesses and evidence that included DNA and Brown's own words about killing the victim." Maybe they can get Sharpton and Obama's preacher to come down and shut down the whole of V.C.? Who does she think her son is, O.J.? She should be tried as an accessory before the fact in my opinion.

I don't know why we bother to feed this ilk, nor understand why we spend over $50k to 'humanely' kill them on Death Row. They should use a cattle gun, or better yet, like they do in China: One bullet to the brain and bill the cost of the bullet to the family.

Hey "face" murder is wrong to any degree.I was just wondering if YOUR son was convicted of a murder would you be so quick to suggest a cattle gun be used on your boy...just a thought.

Yes I would, then I would turn the gun on myself for failing as a parent, for creating a monster, for the lives taken of which I am partially responsible for. I am weak, I couldn't live with the shame. Thanks for asking.
